About Sandra Fluke

(For material of a non-political nature, please scroll down to today's other post)

From Pastorius at THE ASTUTE BLOGGERS:
Some Thoughts On Sandra Fluke's Claim That A Woman's Contraception Can Cost $3000 Over 3 Years

Her numbers were no fluke. I do not believe Sandra Fluke just made her numbers up. She is a long time activist. She knows how to represent her cause. The podium she has been given here is too big and important for her to just be winging it.

The ONLY way that contraception could add up to $3000 per year is if one has used expensive services repeatedly.

The pill at $9 a year is NOT expensive. Dr. visits and Pap Smears are not that expensive. Not $1000 a year expensive, anyway.

The services which are expensive are

ABORTIONS (which have an average national cost of $468)

and

RU-486 - which, with Dr. visits - have an average national cost of approximately $400

So, here's a possible explanation.

Doctor visit (to obtain prescription): $75

Pap Smear (usually required by the Dr.) : $200

The Pill at $9 per month = $108 per year

1 Abortion or RU-486 = $400-468 per year

or, about $851 per year.

So, $1000 per year would be approxiamtely the cost of 1 pap smear, 1 Dr. visit, the pill, plus one abortion.

Remember, abortion is part of the constellation of contraceptive options to these people.
Also note THIS, posted today by Z!:
[Sandra Fluke] also, apparently, believes that it is discrimination deserving of legal action if "gender reassignment" surgeries are not covered by employer provided health insurance....

  1. Great roundup of what this nonsense is not about. The whole thing was a staged and planned political attack against the GOP, and as usual, the gop happily obliged and fell into the trap.

  2. Here's part of what I said yesterday at Western Hero about Ms. Fluke to Ms. Shaw Kenawe, a liberal for whom I have a liking. I regard Ms. Shaw as a fine person and a potential friend, despite her being seriously misguided on "Women's Issues" and matters economic. I'm not sure she returns the compliment, however.

" ... the Religious Right does tend to get much too huffy puffy about sex. Evangelicals tend also foam at the mouth and go into paroxysms of righteous rage about things others do that [in my opinion] don't properly concern Evangelicals.

"However, my major concern in all this political wrangling is to get rid of the busybodies of all political stripes who want to supervise and micro-manage our lives and fortunes in areas of their choosing.

"Both Left AND Right are wrong in this determination.

"I am not a Republican, I am a Libertarian, and as such I want everybody to get off my back, off my property, out of my relationships, out of my pocketbook and away from investment portfolio.

"As for this particular sorry subject, I think it's spurious nonsense -- a non-issue -- contrived to set the stage for yet-another liberal power grab.

"This Fluke woman is obviously a Political Operative in the process of trying to stage a coup.

This is no more about "Women's Health" than it about better ways to make chocolate fudge ...'

PS: The insertion of transgender concerns into the action is certainly proof of the essentially political motivation for staging this kerfuffle. What next -- free face lifts for aging socialites asserted as yet-another newly invented "right?" - FT

  3. It's all bogus, as is all progressive propaganda.

Someone pushed back at you on my blog for saying this was a trap, but you are right.

The left did set a trap, and the GOP, and amazingly, Rush Limbaugh fell right into it.

It's a horrendous sleight of hand, changing the subject from the shredding of the constitution to the touchy-feely emotionalism of "womens rights."

  4. I think we will continue to find out more about Mz. Fluke, and it won't be pretty.

As to the fallout, Carbonite stock plummets. Both the Grouch and I have used Carbonite for years. We will probably continue until our paid for service runs out, then we will switch to something else. What a shame.

Rush Limbaugh said he knew about these companies and their politics, but business is business, and if they wanted to take advantage of advertising on his show, fine. By choosing to leave they will suffer the consequences.

It will be interesting to see which companies sign on to take their place.

  5. Of course Fluke's claims about the cost of contraception are hyper-inflated at least and downright lies and distortions at worst.

And if contraception is an absolute daily health need then what about the other daily health needs? Shouldn't toothpaste and dental floss be paid for by insurance? And what about a proper diet to maintain health? Shouldn't food be paid for by insurance? (Ooopss... I forgot that Food stamp use has exploded under Obama.

What Fluke revealed, and unfortunately was NOT talked about because of Rush's unfortunate labeling of Fluke as a "prostitute" is the cradle to grave mentality of socialism which Fluke and Obama represent.

When you let the government help you with every aspect of your life they will run every aspect of your life.

How would you like it if some federal floss inspector showed up at your door?

  6. What are you if you testify in front of congress you need more money to carry on your VERY ACTIVE sex life. The Answer is ...... SLUT!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Fluke also objected to being called a prostitute by Rush. Well, prostitute has a second meaning other than selling oneself sexually, but also: 2. To sell (oneself or one's talent, for example) for an unworthy purpose.

  8. Silverfiddle,
I stand by my statement regarding the trap that Limbaugh fell into. At this point, Obama has won that particular narrative.

It's a horrendous sleight of hand, changing the subject from the shredding of the constitution to the touchy-feely emotionalism of "womens rights."

    Indeed.

Those who don't see what it is will likely NEVER see what it is!

    Excellent point!

And one reason why I labeled my post with "The Nanny State."

From pre-birth to grave ("From cradle to grave").

  10. I want people that favor gun control should buy my ammo. I also think that members of PETA should buy my veal, because I think it's aboslutely my right to demand that government force others to buy me what I want.

  11. Wow, it took a couple of days but you're all falling in with the new Fox paranoid theory of Fluke being a conspiracy. You're not only transparent but ridiculous.

  12. Chuck,
I usually let Liberalmann's comments stand because they provide comic relief AND an example for my students who read this blog. An example of just how empty of logic the Left is.

Liberalmann's needle is stuck. He leaves the same drive-by comments all over the web.

    1. I don't watch Fox, nor do I frequent Fox's web site.

    2. It took a few days to get this post up because I work for a living.

  14. PS: Also, it took a few days for me to post on this topic because I was checking the facts. I didn't want to type in something that I'd have to clean up with toilet paper -- unlike your comments.

  15. And to think this whole conversation didn't have to happen at all if it weren't for that stupid health care law. We have serious problems facing this country. Whether Sandra co-ed can afford her contraceptives is not one of them.
    Sorry. I'm over it.

  16. "Remember, abortion is part of the constellation of contraceptive options to these people."

Exactly. People no longer see it for what it is, they see it as a form of contraception now.

  17. Yup. Fluke is a flake, and she is on a bizarro crusade for "free" contraception. What also gets me is that she has the temerity to go to a CATHOLIC university and make these demands.

More, the whole thing is just another excuse for the left to push their anti-free speech agenda, the number one goal of which is to silence Rush Limbaugh

    ReplyDelete
  18. Tom,
The figures that Fluke cited are accurate IF she had an abortion every year for three years.

Georgetown University is a Jesuit-run institution. Fluke knew the rules when she chose to enroll. She has had an agenda from the start.

More, the whole thing is just another excuse for the left to push their anti-free speech agenda, the number one goal of which is to silence Rush Limbaugh

The Fluke fraud didn't start out that way. But the Left saw their chance once Limbaugh began speaking about Fluke.

  19. Right Wing Theocrat,
People no longer see it for what it is, they see it as a form of contraception now.

And not "just" abortion. Revolving-door abortion.

Abortion used to be reserved for "making one mistake." That will not be the case if abortion is free. Of course, the price for these women's consciences will be HUGE.
