What I do over there may surprise some people who are used to the more earnest, sententious style I most often use when responding at other peoples' blogs.
One of the things that disturbs me -- a bit -- about the blogosphere is the frequent failure to recognize humor, satire and sarcasm as such.
Member of my generation rarely have any difficulties, unless we're from Minnesota or Rio Linda. We generally know when someone is pulling our leg or trying to make a joke at our expense, and we know how to laugh it off and take it in stride.
I refuse to label my remarks specifically as
"HUMOROUS -- please be prepared to laugh" --
"SARCASTIC -- please don't take offense, I don't mean you, personally" -- or
"This is SATIRE - a take off or mockery of someone else's too pompous or too pious treatment of a serious topic, please don't take it too seriously," etc.
To provide such labels is in my opinion insufferably CONDESCENDING and an insult to the intelligence of readers. If they don't "GET IT," well TOUGH! I'm not trying to run a Literary Kindergarten.
Anyone willing to jettison a friendly relationship with me, and start a feud, because they couldn't understand what my intent was in making a public statement that never involved them in the first place was not worth having as a friend to begin with.
I'm a kind-hearted soul who tends to be generous. I prefer to be on good terms with everyone, but to quote The Bard, "I don't suffer fools gladly."
