Music For Resurrection Day

(Hat tip to Mark Alexander of A New Dark Age Is Dawning)

"Wele'n Sefyll Rhwng y Mwrtwydd" ("Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah"):

Lyrics in Welsh:
Wele'n sefyll rhwng y myrtwydd
Wrthrych teilwng o fy mryd;
Er mai o ran, yr wy'n adnabod
Ei_fod uwchlaw gwrthrychau'r byd:
Henffych fore, henffych fore,
Y caf ei weled fel y mae.

Rhosyn Saron yw ei enw,
Gwyn a gwridog, teg o bryd;
Ar ddeng mil y mae'n rhagori
O wrthrychau penna'r byd:
Ffrind pechadur, ffrind pechadur,
Dyma_ei beilat ar y môr.

Beth sy imi mwy a wnelwyf
Ag eilunod gwael y llawr?
Tystio'r wyf nad yw eu cwmni
I'w cystadlu â Iesu mawr:
O! am aros, o am aros
Yn ei gariad ddyddiau f'oes.
Parsing and translation of the Welsh words:
Lo, between the myrtles standing,
One who merits well my love,
Though His worth I guess but dimly,
High all earthly things above;
Happy morning! Happy morning!
When at last I see Him clear!
When at last I see Him clear!

Rose of Sharon, so men name Him;
White and red his cheeks adorn;
Store untold of earthly treasure
Will His merit put to scorn
Friend of sinners! Friend of sinners!
He their pilot o'er the deep.
He their pilot o'er the deep.

What can weigh with me henceforward
All the idols of the earth?
One and all I here proclaim them,
Matched with Jesus, nothing worth;
O to rest me! O to rest me!
All my lifetime in His love!
All my lifetime in His love!

— Poetic translation

  6. Ugh:

    Google honors Cesar Chavez on Easter

    On Easter Sunday, Google is honoring the birthday of the late labor organizer Cesar Chavez by placing a Chavez portrait within the middle “o” of the Google logo that appears on the homepage of the popular search engine.

    While Google frequently decorates its logo to celebrate various holidays and special events, it is unclear why the company chose specifically to honor Chavez’s birthday, instead of Easter Sunday.

    Chavez co-founded the organization now known as the United Farm Workers union (UFW). He became an iconic figure in the labor movement, with his stature only increasing since his death in 1993.

    President Barack Obama released a statement in 2011 proclaiming March 31 “Cesar Chavez Day,” declaring, “I call upon all Americans to observe this day with appropriate service, community, and educational programs to honor Cesar Chavez’s enduring legacy.”

    Google CEO Eric Schmidt was an informal adviser to both of President Obama’s presidential campaigns, a member of the Obama White House transition team in 2009 and a onetime prospect for an Obama Cabinet post during the president’s second term....

  7. What robust, glorious singing!

    This hymn is heard in the movie How Green Was My Valley, a poignant, lyric portrait of life as experienced by a family of Welsh coal miners more than a century ago. This film is a beautiful experience no one should miss.

    Jesus Christ IS the personification of the Holy Ghost. He lived among us, suffered, died, and rose from the dead so that we might come to realize that the Holy Spirit lives in each of us, as it lived in Him. In that ever growing realization we may be saved from the anxiety, perplexity, depression, envy and brute savagery that exists -- within ourselves -- when we fail to recognize our essential oneness with God the Father, Son and Holy Ghost.

    Words mean nothing. Facts mean nothing. Musical notes and tunes mean nothing. Work means nothing, unless all is INFUSED with growing AWARENESS of the Beauty, Power, Wonder, Glory, and infinite Creativity of the Holy Spirit.

    "Revival" means renewed and refreshed AWARENESS that "Reality" comprises far more than the meagerness we may perceive through our five senses. Truth (God) penetrates every atom with infinite depth, and extends and magnifies, itself, toward Infinity.

    Easter is all about REAWAKENING to faith in Life (God) and the Boundless, Unlimited Glory of His Creation.

    We fail the Lord when we fail to love life, fail to love all people as His children, and fail to appreciate and make optimal use of the many opportunities we are given, however humble or unappealing they may seem to be.

    HAPPY EASTER!

  9. "God of Grace and God of Glory"...I had this sung at Mr. Z's funeral. It's been a favorite of mine since I first saw the film HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY as a young child.
    I have to admit, when I've directed this, I save the "echo" of the men's voices till the last few verses:) It's my favorite part.

    I've felt Mr. Z the last few days so it wasn't surprising to open your link and find that's the song.
    I played piano at the large bible study I was in when Mr. Z died and had to beg off playing for a few weeks because I couldn't get through it...Was I glad I had told them I couldn't play because the very first hymn the Director had the temporary pianist play was this one.
    God works in strange ways.

    Lovely hymn for Easter..thanks, AOW.

  10. Yes, this hymn is a integral part of the film score for How Green Was My Valley, which my Western Civilization through Film class watched this year. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic Picture.

    Wikipedia has more information about the film.

  11. Z,
    Thank you for telling us about this hymn's connection with Mr. Z! I am glad that you were blessed by my posting this hymn.

    I have a personal story, too, but not as moving as yours: How Green Was My Valley was the film to which my father took my mother on their first date in 1950. At that time the 1941 film was making another round at some of the cinemas.
