Blurb for the video below (emphases mine):
Scottsdale, Arizona mom Amanda Wray discusses the contents of the ‘dossier,’ which includes hidden camera conversations, bank records, phone numbers and addresses [and more].

FEATURED QUESTION: The Path To Destruction

In my homeschool World Literature class this year, we are reading George Orwell's 1984, the other outside-the-textbook readings being Edith Hamilton's Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes, William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice, and Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart.

I am reading 1984 again, of course. Until now, I hadn't opened the novel itself for over half a century! Naturally, my insights and interpretations are much different now, and I find myself occasionally gasping and frequently nodding my head.

Anyway, here is one of the famous quotations from Orwell's dystopian novel.

For discussion, this FEATURED QUESTION, in two parts: (1) How is the above Orwell quotation true and engulfing us in Orwellian Times? (2) How is the above Orwell quotation not true and therefore not engulfing us in Orwellian Times?

Self-Policed Thought

Silverfiddle Rant!
George Packer has written a good article in the Atlantic:

In it, he excoriates President Trump and dilates upon the danger he presents to our republic. But then he aims his criticism at Double Speak the woke left indulges in, and laments how identity politics has become the standard for judging the merits of artistic works.

"Progressive doublethink—which has grown worse in reaction to the right-wing kind—creates a more insidious unreality because it operates in the name of all that is good."

Doublethink produces cognitive dissonance, confusion, and ultimately, emotional distress. A healthy, free and rational human being will reject the contradictions and throw it all on the trash heap. But tyranny makes you pay a high price for doing so, be it a boot to the face from a 1984-style dictatorial regime, or from today's social media pile-ons and banishment from the Woke Hive.

So, we develop coping mechanisms, and Packer's cogent description is brilliant:
Some people who register […] doublethink might be privately troubled, but they don’t say so publicly. Then self-censorship turns into self-deception, until the recognition itself disappears—a lie you accept becomes a lie you forget. In this way, intelligent people do the work of eliminating their own unorthodoxy without the Thought Police.
He sums up the dangers of this in his penultimate two paragraphs. Please comprehend them and tell us what you think in the comments.
Orthodoxy is also enforced by social pressure, nowhere more intensely than on Twitter, where the specter of being shamed or “canceled” produces conformity as much as the prospect of adding to your tribe of followers does. This pressure can be more powerful than a party or state, because it speaks in the name of the people and in the language of moral outrage, against which there is, in a way, no defense. Certain commissars with large followings patrol the precincts of social media and punish thought criminals, but most progressives assent without difficulty to the stifling consensus of the moment and the intolerance it breeds—not out of fear, but because they want to be counted on the side of justice.

This willing constriction of intellectual freedom will do lasting damage. It corrupts the ability to think clearly, and it undermines both culture and progress. Good art doesn’t come from wokeness, and social problems starved of debate can’t find real solutions. “Nothing is gained by teaching a parrot a new word,” Orwell wrote in 1946. “What is needed is the right to print what one believes to be true, without having to fear bullying or blackmail from any side.” Not much has changed since the 1940s. The will to power still passes through hatred on the right and virtue on the left.

See 'Scorched Earth': Mueller's Targets Speak Out by Paul Sperry at RealClear Investigations.

The last two paragraphs therefrom:
Ex-Trump campaign official Michael Caputo, who went public earlier, complaining he had to remortgage his house after having to hire expensive Washington lawyers, wants Mueller and his team investigated for “prosecutorial abuses.” “Ruining lives was blood sport for them,” he said.

[Journalist Art] Moore agreed: “You look at the lives ruined — Corsi, Michael Flynn and others. That alone is enough to warrant a special investigation.”

Look. I understand that a lot of people don't like Donald Trump.  Disliking, even hating, any given President is an American tradition. But resorting to the methods as described in the RealClear Investigations essay cited above?

Such measures are Kafka-esque. Orwellian.

Some say the methods of an attempted coup.

Tipping Point?

To this we have come....

But not all that surprising when we consider some of Wellesley's alumnae who entered government and public service.  That particular list includes Hillary Clinton.

We also read that Charlotte Anita Whitney is an alumna of Wellesley. She was an early Communist Labor Party of America and Communist Party USA organizer in California. She was named the national chairwoman of the Communist Party in 1936.

From Wellesley College Students: ‘Hostility’ Is Warranted Against People Who Say Anything Offensive:
... The student editors say it’s fine to suppress and deny people the right to speak their minds if their thoughts offend others.

“We have all said problematic claims,” the editorial reads. “Luckily most of us have been taught by our peers and mentors at Wellesley in a productive way.”

If that doesn’t sound like it was ripped from a dystopian novel, what comes next is truly Orwellian: “If people are given the resources to learn and either continue to speak hate speech or refuse to adapt their beliefs, then hostility may be warranted.” In other words, if you say things some people find offensive, then there will be physical consequences.

[...]

This weird interpretation of free speech — that saying offensive or politically incorrect things deprives others of rights — is not exclusive to the faculty. Here’s how the student editorial staff describes the objective of free speech: “The spirit of free speech is to protect the suppressed, not a free-for-all where anything is acceptable, no matter how hateful and damaging.”...

Recommended Reading (With Addedum Related To The Firing Of Acting Attorney General Sally Yates)

See Obama’s administration made the “Muslim ban” possible and the media won’t tell you at Terra Incognita (hat tip to Infidel Bloggers Alliance):
I was outraged by the ban on refugees from war-torn countries in the Middle East. I’ve covered refugees fleeing war in Iraq and Syria over the last two years, meeting families on the road in Greece, Serbia and Macedonia, speaking to poor people in Turkey and Jordan and discussing the hopes and fears of people displaced in Iraq. If you want to ban “terrorists,” these are the last people to hit with a refugee ban. Instead the government should be using the best intelligence possible to find people being radicalized, some of whom have lived in the US their whole lives or who come from countries not affected by the ban, such as Saudi Arabia or Pakistan.

So I was outraged, and then I read the executive order....

[...]

But, wait a sec. According to the reports “The order bars all people hailing from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.” Critics had attacked Trump for selecting these seven countries and not selecting other states “linked to his sprawling business empire.” Bloomberg and Forbes bought into this.

But, wait a sec. I read the order and Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen are not mentioned in it.

Go back and read it again. Do a “ctrl-f” to find “Iraq”. Where is “Iraq” in the order. It’s not there. Only Syria is there. So where are the seven nations? Where is the “Muslim ban”? It turns out this was a form of fake news, or alternative facts. Trump didn’t select seven “Muslim-majority” countries. US President Barack Obama’s administration selected these seven Muslim-majority countries.

The Department of Homeland Security targeted these seven countries over the last years as countries of concern....

[...]

So for more than a year it has been US policy to discriminate against, target and even begin to ban people from the seven countries that Trump is accused of banning immigrants and visitors from....

[...]

...[W]hy didn’t CNN note that the seven countries were not named and that in fact they are only on the list because of Obama’s policy?...

We cannot trust the mainstream media. They are the Enemedia and agenda driven.

ADDENDUM

From "Quick Thoughts On Sally Yates’ Unpersuasive Statement" by Jack Goldsmith of Lawfare:
...[I]n the context of deciding whether to defend a presidential EO, the question for Yates is reasonable legality, not what is just and right. If Yates thought the EO, independent of its legality, had crossed a red line of justice and rightness—whatever those terms mean—she should have counseled the President on that point and resigned if he disagreed....

The News Networks — And The Second 2016 Presidential Debate

Note: this thread will remain here for a few days and may also be used to discuss the October 9 debate between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Donald J. Trump.

One of my Facebook finds:

It's a little funny, but when you sit and let it sink in, it's really not:

NBC = Nobody But Clinton

ABC = Always Believe Clinton

CBS = Clinton Broadcasting System

CNN = Clinton News Network

CNNHL =Clinton News Network Honesty Lost

MSNBC = More Same Nobody But Clinton

PBS = Proletariat Broadcasting System

FOX = Fair Objective eXperts

I'm not so sure about that last one.

Fox's Friday frenzy to cover the revelation of Donald Trump's use of "the p-word" — in a private conversation aboard a Hollywood studio bus some eleven years ago — instead of emphasizing the same day's revelations regarding Hillary Rodham Clinton's paid speeches differed little from the coverage afforded by the other networks.

Why Aren't We Hearing More About This? (Video added)

Hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil

Z's post today reminded me of this February 5, 2016 article, which I've cited numerous times in comments but possibly not in the body of a blog post: DHS ordered me to scrub records of Muslims with terror ties.

DHS whistle blower Philip Haney:

In a national address on June 14, 2016, Barack Hussein Obama evinced more ire directed at Donald Trump than toward the murderous jihadists who slaughtered 49 people and wounded many others in Orlando's Pulse Nightclub on June 12, 2016.

Meanwhile: ISIS propaganda video exploits Orlando nightclub murders and calls for more attacks on US.

Transparency?

When it came to the Iran agreement, not so much.

Eight minutes expunged from State Department Spokesperson Jen Psak 's response to Fox News reporter James Rosen's question.

No further investigation will be pursued.

From US State Dept edited press briefing video of Iran talks (dated June 1, 2016):
Washington (AFP) - The US State Department edited footage of a press briefing to remove a response to a question about secret back-channel talks with Iran, its spokesman admitted Wednesday.

Spokesman John Kirby asked department lawyers to investigate after Fox News correspondent James Rosen noticed that video of a question he posed in December 2013 was not in the public archive.

On Wednesday, Kirby announced that the cut -- previously described by officials as a "glitch" -- had indeed been deliberately carried out, but said it was not known who had ordered the edit.

[...]

"To my surprise the Bureau of Public affairs did not have in place any rules governing this type of action," he added, promising that henceforth briefings will be properly archived in full.

The Words Which Must Not Be Uttered

1984's Newspeak in 2016

From WH Censors French President Saying ‘ISLAMIST Terrorism’:
The White House website has censored a video of French Pres. Francois Hollande saying that “Islamist terrorism” is at the “roots of terrorism.”

The White House briefly pulled video of a press event on terrorism with Pres. Obama, and when it reappeared on the WhiteHouse.gov website and YouTube, the audio of Hollande’s translator goes silent, beginning with the words “Islamist terrorism,” then begins again at the end of his sentence.

Even the audio of Hollande saying the words “Islamist terrorism” in French have, apparently, been edited from the video.

According to the official White House transcript of Hollande’s remarks, Hollande refers to “Islamist terrorism.” The audio of the bold text in brackets is missing from the video – the only point in the video [where] the audio is absent
Here's the video, with Hollande's comment censored:

The translation of the words which disappeared from the audio translation of the video:
Islamist terrorism, is in Syria and in Iraq. We therefore have to act both in Syria and in Iraq, and this is what we're doing within the framework of the coalition.
