ReplyDeleteA break with Anglican Tradition to allow pre-pubescent girls to sing this kind of music in public.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, however, that the young girls sound almost as good as their male counterparts.
I once saw an amateur production of Amahl and the Night Visitors where Amahl was played by a girl, because no boy capable of adequately singing the role could be found. It wasn't bad.
And then we should remember that all of Shakespeare's female roles were originally portrayed by men.
Peter Pan on the other hand has always been played by a woman.
Maybe humanity has made too much out of the vaunted difference between male and female?
But then how would you feel if Juliet were to be played by a 300-pound black male and Romeo by a fragile blonde female?
There is no idea that cannot be carried too far, is there? ;-)
How well they sing and how beautifully they read lines should be the only criteria.
