What A Relief!

(For politics, please scroll down. There are active threads below)

The past several weeks, Mr. AOW has been having a lot of trouble with swelling of the stroke-affected foot and ankle, and the doctor was concerned that Mr. AOW might have a deep vein thrombosis (DVT).  Wednesday afternoon, it was confirmed by ultrasound that Mr. AOW does not have a DVT.

Summer 2015 has been a rough ride. We've been lurching from one home-front crisis to another! More details forthcoming when I have the energy to post that information.

  1. Coincidence. I just had a doppler ultrasound on my right leg.
    Glad he doesn't have DVT.

  4. Very glad to hear it's not DVT....I hope they find the cause soon and he's feeling better and YOU can get some REST!
all the best, as usual xxx

  5. No luck yet getting swelling in that foot to go down so that Mr. AOW can get his shoe and leg brace on.

We've tried low-salt diet, cranberry juice, watermelon, and the like.

    **sigh**

  6. I am sorry to hear how rough your summer has been. Glad it's NOT DVT, but hope this calms down soon!

  7. This is the summer of weird medical scenarios.

In my own case, a blood test has now determined that I've never had the chickenpox. So, now I have to get THAT vaccine at the age of 63.

  8. When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit-
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a fellow turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
    It seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
    Whe he might have captured the victor's cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out ––
The silver tint in the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
    It might be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

  10. Good grief!

My doctor called this evening and told me to stay away from ALL children until I've been vaccinated against the chickenpox. How am I supposed to do THAT?

Such a directive would span a period of at least four weeks, and the classes I teach begin in THREE weeks. Not to mention having to go to the grocery store and the like.

  11. 63 years and NOW stay away from chicken?
    Hmmmmm.
And can the chicken pox vaccine dispose you to shingles?

    1. Oh, dear me. It said children, not chicken.
      But still..

    2. Interesting point, Ed.

Which is more of a risk, chicken pox or shingles?

    3. Ed,
Supposedly, both vaccines prevent the shingles.

      Duck,
The greater risk to life is the chickenpox. BTW, my uncle died of the chickenpox at age 31; encephalitis set in, I think.

One cannot get the shingles unless one has had the chickenpox. Also, if one has not had the chickenpox or been vaccinated against the chickenpox, one can get the chickenpox if exposed to shingles. Mr. AOW had the shingles in 2010, but I didn't get the chickenpox then, either.

    4. Shingles is usually excruciatingly painful and can cause blindness if the eye is affected.

  12. My doctor explained that shingles always resides, residual from cpox, waiting for a lapse in defenses which are always holding it back.

  13. Good news AOW.

@ED, Get the shingles vaccine. My health ins paid for it 100%. I think it's around 250 bt certainly worth it even if you have to pay for it imo.

    1. Kid,
On Monday, I'm going to pick up the prescription for the chickenpox vaccine, and I'll get the first of the two injections on Wednesday or Thursday. A prescription is required for those born after 1980.

I'm not sure if my insurance company will pay for the vaccine.

  14. Last year I got a mild itch on my scalp.
Doc said it was shingles. Some get it worse.
My dad was on vacation and it hit him hard. Couldn't drive home for another week.
    Fortunately he was retired.

    1. Ed,
Did you get the antiviral medicine?

      Delete
    2. No. I don't think so.
I got something, but it might have been steroidal.
      Scherie's looking for it.
Wait a minute. Here it is.
"Acyclovir is used to treat infections caused by certain types of viruses. It treats cold sores around the mouth (caused by herpes simplex), shingles (caused by herpes zoster), and chickenpox."

My pharmacist wasn't sold on the vaccine either.

    3. Ed,
That's an antiviral medication. Mr. AOW took that , I think.

The shingles vaccine may not be as effective as the chickenpox vaccine.
