DHS Surveillance

Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch states as follows in this announcement on January 2, 2012:
Welcome, DHS agents!

I've just learned that the Department of Homeland Security has Jihad Watch under surveillance, along with a broad spectrum of sites all over the ideological and political map, including Live Leak, Vimeo, Youtube, Flickr, Counter-Terrorism Blog, Danger Room, Drudge Report, Foreign Policy, Global Security Newswire, Google Blog Search, Homeland Security Today, Huffington Post, LongWarJournal, MEMRI, Newsweek Blogs, NYTimes Lede Blog, Plowshares Fund, Popular Science Blogs, Science Daily, STRATFOR, Technorati, Terror Finance Blog, and many, many others.

Clearly there is no commonality here -- in other words, the DHS isn't just watching anti-jihad sites, or conservative sites. The explanation given is this: "This is a representative list of sites that the NOC [National Operations Center] will start to monitor in order to provide situational awareness and establish a common operating picture under this Initiative. Initial sites listed may link to other sites not listed. The NOC may also monitor those sites if they are within the scope of this Initiative."...
I suppose that any of us on the blogrolls of various sites or any of us commenting at various sites might also be under surveillance.

Full disclosure: Always On Watch is on the blogroll at Jihad Watch.

HERE
is the pdf with the initial list.

Folks, there are the times that try men's souls. Make your stand as you will. I've already made mine!

  1. Yeah and undercover of the New Years holiday, Friday, The Black Messiah with grave reservations signed into law an extension of the Patriot (LMAO) Act which allows the president to hold a citizen indefinitely without charges if they are thought to be ... well make something up.

Now I'm sure my hypocritical brethren on the right either supported or didn't care about COINTELPRO but as soon as an ass like Spencer starts braying, well there they are ...

  2. Duck,
Actually, the pdf file is dated January 2011.

But just now, people are finding out that their sites are on the list.

  3. Interesting it is sites from all sides of the political spectrum.

  4. Darn! I didn't make the list. I guess I'll have to try harder in 2012.

More outrageous than the monitoring (the are public sites, after all) is that taxpayer money is being spent on this.

The government should press welfare and unemployment recipients into monitoring all this stuff...

    Actually, that's not true.

I admit that I myself didn't see the inherent danger of certain acts that were immediately passed by both sides of the aisle right after 9/11. But, hey, I was not very politically astute back then.

I clearly recall that blogger LA Sunsett sounded a warning. And he's not on the Left side of the political spectrum.

Well, I recall that I did post about that matter.

And while we at it, criticizing a President's ability to suspend habeas corpus, let us recall that Abraham Lincoln did so too.

Let us remember that commenters at all this sites are all over the political spectrum too.

I do note in the pdf that DHS agents may assume identities and participate in the threads. Keep that in mind.

Maybe not more outrageous, but certainly AS outrageous.

As if our budget has bucks to spare! Sheesh.

  9. Hi AOW.
That confirms what i already noticed in the IP's of visitors, as i already pointed out to you, this is nothing new and has been going on for a while.Add your blog to Google analitics and then you can see clearly who's visiting. DHS has it's own server so it jumps out as a visitor if you check visits according to servers.

  10. Well, the PDF link froze up my computer so no doubt any of us who took a lookie look at the list are now on their list! Earlier I was suspicious when I saw that all of my links made from a site were checked, and came up as another hit after a year.

  11. I wonder how long it will be before many of our blogs are being, "watched."

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh my that is why I had more visits.

Good because I posted something they may hate us to know!

Did you all catch his bill for firearms? Disarm them all that won't submit and take em down with the hired thugs.

  13. AOW,
It looks like they don't want folks to see the list.

  14. I would think that those left-leaning sites were included just to show a sense of faux fairness---think about it!!! Well "1984" is only 28 years late!

  15. Hmm, they're going to be monitoring Hulu. Wonder if they have a Hulu plus account. There are a number of great Criterion films that are only available by download. Don't understand why Homeland Security is interested in 1960's Japanese New Wave.

    Absolutely insane document.

  16. I've known for a very long time now that my site was being watched, sitemeter and a couple of other tools tell me so...

I haven't changed my blogging style in ANY way, and I never will, I refuse to acquiesce to the moron in the Oval Office and his version of Gestapo...

  17. Hey folks, the link to the PDF works. It might be if your Adobe Reader is outdated or the site was overloaded with too many hits. I got on fine though.

    Duckey sez -
    "Now I'm sure my hypocritical
brethren on the right either supported or didn't care about COINTELPRO..."

Actually Ducky a lot of conservatives )including me) were in agreement with you. Typically the government casts a wide net once it gets certain powers. I saw back then the potential for abuse at a later date. By the way, when I saw Hulu on the list, I had the same thought about Plus! I bet the DHS agents will be falling all over each other trying to get that assignment! I can hear the NOC daily briefing now.....
"Ladies and gentlemen, we have our orders from Director Napolitano. The Hulu Criterion Collection is of utmost importance to national security. I cannot stress that enough. Therefore, we feel that a task of this magnitude can only be handled at a supervisory level. Bring me some coffee, a half dozen bagels, cream cheese and some jam. I'll be in lock-down in my office the rest of the day.

  18. Duck,
    Absolutely insane document.

    Well, we agree there.

Of course, our tax dollars support both the making of the list and the enforcement of the monitoring of those on the list. Jobs!

    I feel the same way.

Of course, the day may come when it doesn't matter who our Internet server and blog server are. We may be silenced.

The erosion of freedom of speech leads to no good place!

We are living in times that view dissension to the status quo (politics, in particular) is a hate crime.

    Excellent point!

Just because a name appears on the list doesn't mean that the DHS is actually monitoring that site.

  21. Considering the possibility that bloggers come up with information that the MSM ignores, I can see the Feds wanting more sources of information. While the Left was howling in outrage that the Peace movements, and Civil Rights movements were being spied on by the Feds, they were quietly approving that the KKK, and other so-called Rightist movements, were being spied on.

Right now I give this a big *meh*, and will wait for more information as to how this is being played out, politically, by our "Rulers". ;)

In my view, the present regime full well knows that the web presents a threat to the regime's re-election.

With regard to anti-jihad sites, the evil deeds that Breivik committed in Norway last year are having repercussions.

I think if Obama wins reelection, within six months we will see sites like this being closed down by some executive order or regulatory agency. It will be spun as a "positive development for fairness and equality" on the internet and old media will hail it as a step forward.

Chalk it up to ali obuttheads cronies.

Now they get to go cut paste and brag how they got info on the GOP.

  28. I WAS having a quiet Sunday. I'm afraid DHS is one of the worst things to ever happen to this country. They have spawned so many affronts to our civil liberties like TSA gropes, FEMA camps (out for bid soon!), and now Big Brother Blogger.

I guess nothing criminal is going on there then.

  31. Where do all these cushy DHS assignments come from. I am hip deep in forms and counting forms and inane training.

They actually have a mandated suicide prevention and how to respond to a shooter training. Oddly our experts blew it when we had a small earthquake. The correct
instruction is shelter in place not evacuate.

Thus it has been with government jobs for a long time.

Hang in there, Beak. "This too shall pass."
