Peak Progressive?

Silverfiddle Rant!
Kaylee McGhee White writes in the Examiner that Biden's Agenda is Dead.  That's debatable, but she makes some good points.  After the Democrats' Tuesday night drubbing, she asks...

Why, then, would any centrist Democrat go out on a limb to support him and his $1.75 trillion-plus budget "reconciliation" framework?

This leftwing slush fund was already on thin ice.  Democrat are fighting with themselves over nothing more than a raw political exercise.  What's in the bill?  What's out? For how many years?

What do they want to accomplish? Even Democrats don't know, or it changes based on the latest negotiation.  At this point, the progressive caucus are children screaming in a store because Daddy Joe and Mommy Kyrsten won't buy them that bicycle, the other kids are frantic, and Grandpa Joe and Grandma Nancy are trying to bargain them down to a less expensive toy.

Most Americans don't know what is in the bill...
Although a majority (55%) of the public is following news about the negotiations at least somewhat closely, about 7 in 10 (69%) Americans said they know just some or little to nothing about what's in both bills. (ABC News)
Most Americans are not cheering for this bill's passing...
The ABC News/Ipsos poll, which was conducted using Ipsos' KnowledgePanel, found that a plurality (32%) of Americans think the bills would hurt people like them if they became law, while fewer (25%) think it would help them.

Even among Democrats alone, fewer than half (47%) think the two bills would help people like them. (ABC News)
So, why are Democrats desperate to pass something, anything?

The answer is, raw, naked power.  Elected officials and unelected bureaucrats have lost the telos.  They view their actions as their own ends.  Diplomats and foreign policy types think holding talks and reaching meaningless, unenforceable "deals" are accomplishments.  Congresspeople and Senators see legislation as an accomplishment within itself, and who gives a hoot about unintended consequences.

Our federal government is a gargantuan shambolic cyclops eating trillions of dollars and crapping lead boulders, destroying everything and everyone in its path.  I have no idea how We The People ever get this under control, but Tuesday just might be a start.

What say you?

  1. "The answer is, raw, naked power."
That may be, but it really is to crash the economy, to provide the foundation for "The Great Reset"
To bring America to it's knees from within so that "socialism" appears the only solution.

  2. It is called the "$1.75 Trillion Bill" because at this point it has not yet been written. The only thing that has been decided is the amount, which is clear revelation that Democrats are spending money for no reason other than spending money. What they spend it on is of no real concern to the Democrat leadership, as long as money, as much money as possible, is spent.

    1. Well Jayhawk, I’m not sure how cutting the original funding and only being allowed a certain $ amount to spend on an historic project of many moving parts equates to a clear revelation of spending money for no reason at all or just blowing money on anything just because you have it.

Even if we disagree on on the different needs of certain parts of infrastructure improvements, going from $3.5T to $1.75T simply means there are going to be cuts from what was previously planned.

Had they had added to the original $3.5T, your argument might have merit.

On another note because 2016 was like 80 years ago and people seem to forget, the previous administration campaigned on a promise of huge infrastructure improvements which was widely popular with constituents and lawmakers of both parties. Yet even with full control of the Executive and Legislative Branches, to set whatever spending they wanted, didn’t.

    2. Ronald, your argument about the dollar amount dropping equals savings, reminds me of a shopaholic who blows $600, and then says they saved $400 because the original price was $1,000. They still blew $600

    3. Ronald, regardless of the merits are demerits of the proposed and ever shifting legislation, does it bother you at all that most Americans don't know what's in it, and most Americans are dubious?

  3. No, the timeline of negotiations on this bill doesn’t compare to a buying spree because something’s on sale. There’s no connection. They knew what they wanted and decided the cost. Now they have to figure what to slash because they don’t have the money.

Does it bother me that people don’t know what’s in the bill?

I once read that 10% of college educated Americans think that Judge Judy is or was a Supreme Court Justice. I’d wager 70% can’t correctly name the 3 branches oh government. I believe that most adult U.S. citizens, rather than being political analyst or pundits, are squandering their time with a career, raising a family, taking in an occasional sports event or enjoying a bbq.

I could also go into a lengthy detail on how the GOP think tanks know this and how they exploit it. No, seriously, I can. Believe it or not, I ca get rather long winded at times.

    1. So, in your opinion, Congress should just do what the hell ever they think the American people need and who hell with public opinion?

    2. That is not my opinion.

I also disagree with the Washington Examiner or for that matter, much of the other right wing propaganda outlets that like to spin public opinion to suit their agenda.

Public opinion favors these bills much more than the conspiracy theorists want you to believe.

    3. Then your argument really is with ABC and Ipsos who conducted the poll. The results are damning to whatever the hell the Democrats are trying to accomplish.

    4. RJW,
I’d wager 70% can’t correctly name the 3 branches oh government.

Could be. I've seen that with 9th Grade gifted-and-talented students.

More evidence of the failed public school systems, which are all about being propagandists for Leftism. Schools need to teach more objective FACTS.

  4. SF, not so much with ABC or IPSOS but more with how these disinformation rags like Washington Examiner, GatewayPundit, AmericanNonThinker, Newsmax, Epochtimes, The Federalist, Tucker, Hannity, Fox & Friends, and the like want to cherry pick and spin to sell the basket of gullibles what they want to believe.

It’s a lot like how “Obamacare” is way less popular than The Affordable Care Act (and seriously and truthfully, it really actually is) even though it’s the exact same law.

From Morning Consult/Politico, which is reasonably consistent with others polls on Build Back Better:

78% of voters support “expanding Medicare coverage to cover hearing services.”
66% of voters support “funding for affordable housing.”
61% of voters support “funding for child care and universal pre-kindergarten.”
53% of voters support “extending the child tax credit for one year.”
59% of voters support “a 15% corporate minimum tax rate for large corporations.”

Even aside from the above, Democrats did not deliver the Build Back Better plan. They DID NOT do it. Voters don’t punish a political party for not doing what they don’t want them to do. They punish them for DOING what they don’t want them to do. Alarm bells have been going off for weeks of the need to pass the legislation to help in this very election (albeit the above spinmeister outlets may have omitted such things).

AOW, well, I was taught those things in school as were my kids as are my grandkids here in Owensboro KY as I suspect they do across the river in Evansville IN where you live (welcome to the neighborhood).

I’d say that what people retain is contingent with their interests and such. I know a few years ago (well, maybe 20), I could troubleshoot and repair a microprocessor and could spit out op-amp calculation for about any process. That’s all gone today because it no longer applies in the field. You just replace the processor. There’s no need or interest of me to remember or care about such things anymore. I couldn’t answer the basics anymore.

But I would say that the above so-called news outlets I mentioned along with Betsy DeVos would be proud that their initiative of demeaning public schools is alive and well.

  5. And SF, the very first sentence of your linked article reads: "There is no doubt about it: The Biden administration is a failure".

I suspect after that paramount announcement, Kaylee McGhee surely put down her partisan blinders and focused solely on raw numbers? I don't know because I quit reading at that point.

    1. I don't expect you to agree with conservative editorials criticizing your side. The focus is on the numbers in the polling.

Even the Democrats don't know what's in or out of their proposed legislation. It's all been very sloppy and dodgy.

Remember when congress used to have hearings on proposals, with pros and cons weighing in? Public debate? They have given us none of that.

So, in summary, I hope they run hard left and keep slamming. We'll see next year what the voters think.

  6. "Remember when congress used to have hearings on proposals, with pros and cons weighing in? Public debate? They have given us none of that."

Mitch McConnell sank that boat years ago. How much input did they accept when they rammed their tax scam down our throats when they had power? How much input are they offering now when they are out of power?

Come to think of it, I haven't seen a piece of legislation that's come from that side of the aisle in over 50 years that was advantageous for anyone other than the most wealthy.

    1. So that makes this OK?

Democrats are only hurting themselves. I hope they continue.

  7. BTW, here is the poll from Morning Consult.

The most popular measure in the proposes Build Back Better bill only gets 41%. Popularity like that loses elections
