Beyond Horrible, Beyond Tragic

Dead in Connecticut school shooting include 20 children

The bereaved and the survivors are scarred for life.  They will never recover.

The saddest music I know below the fold:

  1. Another terrible even for the US. Always terrible when children are involved.

Your music is appropriate. You are right, the lives of those left will never be the same.

  2. Who saw this coming?

    WHO?

Surely, someone. Likely someone in the immediate family.

It is rare for someone to commit a horrific deed without at least other person knowing that something was terribly wrong.

  3. The dead kids are lucky. They are out of it. They won't have to deal with a future where they'll be dead broke a fair game for being abused and taken advantage of by bossy know-it-alls. I feel sorry for the parents and the brothers and sisters who will have to listen to fire-breathing libitches like Shawkinaw exploit their grief to grab more power for the dee cee politburo.

  5. What happened at that school today has given me the creeps in so many ways -- not the least of them being that, for the past week or so, I've been reading the bestselling novel One Breath Away. Read the link to see why I'm particularly creeped out.

On a more significant level, as a teacher I know how vulnerable any school is -- no matter how much security is in place.

  6. But you can bet they'll be no tracking how he procured the guns.
He could just pick them up at a gun show with no background check.

Maybe he nagged them in Virginia. It's pretty wide open there.

And now we have 20 children, kindergartners, shot execution style and you know the NRA is gearing up to remind us that all would be well if the school had allowed concealed carry.

But maybe it won't be so easy this time.

Again, not one cogent thought from the Leftists. And if you rely upon LiberalmaNN to provide said logic, you are sadly mistaken.

  9. It's absolutely heart-wrenching what happened. I keep thinking about the presents those little babies will never open and the parents having to see them and not sure what to do with them.

It angers me to see the liberals so hateful at this time.

    America is in mourning.

  10. Duck,
According to some information that I read yesterday, the guns were registered to the young man's mother. I haven't checked yet today to see what further information is available on this terrible tragedy.

  11. The cries for banning handguns are load now. Deafening.

But there IS another issue of equal importance -- perhaps of more importance.

Getting "help" for someone who is obviously mentally disturbed is well nigh impossible if the mentally-disturbed person refuses to cooperate.

Several parents in my family tried to get help for their children -- in these instances, the problem being drug abuse. These children were no older than 15. They resisted help and successfully resisted help -- legally, apparently.

Getting "help" for someone age 18 and over is impossible! Even if another adult holds POA and an advance medical directive.

The mentally ill and others needing "help" typically resist any such measures.

And the ugly fact about sociopathy: there is no such thing as successful treatment. Confinement for life is the only "treatment."

  14. From this source:

Ryan [the shooter's brother] has told investigators he last saw Adam in 2010 and that Adam is autistic.

The spectrum of autism is very broad and involved -- and nowhere close to being understood.

  15. From what I can glean from this article in the New York Times, Lanza was autistic (high functioning and mainstreamed even to the point of honors English) and, additionally, may have tipped over into violent mental illness.

There can be an element of violence in some autistic individuals. Google search [autism violent behavior].

If I thought gun control would stop the insane from doing the insane I would be the first to advocate for it. It WON'T!

  17. Huh? It seems that the shooter's mother had no connection with the school.

So, what set off this shooter so that he mostly targeted a particular classroom?

    Conjecture on my part....

Nancy Lanza had a friend working at the school and told that person working at the school that she was going to start legal proceedings to force an intervention for her son.

Yes, I'm guessing. But I think that my idea makes sense. The shooter was not stupid -- not at all.

Reminds me a bit of the Cheatham case. Please see THIS POST that I published in 2005.

  19. From the Associated Press:

...Adam Lanza and his mother lived in a well-to-do part of prosperous Newtown, about 60 miles northeast of New York City, where neighbors are doctors or hold white-collar positions at companies such as General Electric, Pepsi and IBM.

Lanza's parents filed for divorce in 2008, according to court records. His father, Peter Lanza, lives in Stamford, Conn., and works as a tax director for General Electric.

The gunman's aunt Marsha Lanza, of Crystal Lake, Ill., said her nephew was raised by kind, nurturing parents who would not have hesitated to seek mental help for him if he needed it.

"Nancy wasn't one to deny reality," Marsha Lanza said, adding her husband had seen Adam as recently as June and recalled nothing out of the ordinary.

Catherine Urso, of Newtown, said her college-age son knew the killer and remembered him for his alternative style. "He just said he was very thin, very remote and was one of the goths," she said.

Adam Lanza attended Newtown High School, and several news clippings from recent years mention his name among the honor roll students.

Joshua Milas, who graduated from Newtown High in 2009 and belonged to the school technology club with him, said Adam Lanza was generally a happy person but that he hadn't seen him in a few years.

"We would hang out, and he was a good kid. He was smart," Joshua Milas said. "He was probably one of the smartest kids I know. He was probably a genius."

An official who spoke on condition of anonymity said it was not clear that Adam Lanza had a job, and there was no indication of law enforcement interviews or search warrants at a place of business....

  24. Come, ye disconsolate, where’er ye languish,
    Come, at the shrine of God fervently kneel;
    Here bring your wounded hearts; here tell your anguish;
Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal.

Joy of the desolate, light of the straying,
    Hope when all others die, fadeless and pure;
Here speaks the Comforter, in God’s name saying,
“Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot cure.”

Come, ask the infidel what boon he brings us,
What charm for aching hearts he can reveal,
Sweet is that heavenly promise Hope sings us—
“Earth has no sorrow that God cannot heal.”

  25. Your are certainly right about "progressives," Thersites, as you so often are right about many things. They are, indeed, contemptible. Incidents like this senseless outbreak of murderous violence are best served, however, when we raise our thoughts above the fray, and try to see what has happened in the cosmic context of Eternity.

All the anger, contempt, derision, reasoning -- and grief -- in the world will not undo what has been done -- will not assuage those who have lost their beloved children -- nor will it prevent something of the kind from occurring again someday.

    To Live is to Risk

There's not much else we could properly say.

  26. FT,
Thank you for posting those beautiful words penned by Sir Thomas More.

I do doubt that, right now, the bereaved in Newtown, Connecticut, are able to believe that Earth has no sorrow that heaven cannot heal..

Given time and faith, those parents who lost children will partially heal in this life, completely heal in eternity.

    I couldn't agree more!

I, too, have been thinking about the tragedy of Newtown as related to The Life of Pi. I wonder if any people in Newtown are thinking along the same lines that I am?

  30. My sorrow and sympathies are with those families. Our youngest is seven years old; I cannot imagine what those families are going through!

I find the callous comments of leftists like Ducky cruel. This is a time to mourn, offer aid and evaluate the culture that produced such an evil killer.

If 'gun nuts' are already gearing up to protect our Constitutional rights, it is because they know that leftists like Ducky will use this massacre as a tool to curtail them.

The guy didn't even own those weapons, so far as we know. Even if he bought them, a background check wouldn't have shown a thing.

If there was something wrong with him mentally, as AOW said, it is nigh impossible to do anything about it... And that is leftist law in place.

For example: "I'm a schizophrenic, but you can't legally compel me to take my meds if I don't want to. That would violate my riiiiiiiiiiiiights."

This is a can of worms much larger than gun restrictions!

    ReplyDelete
  31. For me oppressive sadness of this horrible slaughter is only matched by my outrage that rather than deal with the unresolved problem of mental illness which is the root cause of the horror, the left instantly uses this as an excuse to go on another anti-gun crusade.

How many times has this happened and the left screams and yells about guns for a week then that's it until next time?

So little focus on mental health and no real progress in preventing such attacks in future.

Shame on the anti-gun zealots. They have allowed the true problem to remain largely ignored. And because of that more attacks will happen.

The blood is on their hands!

  32. Mike,
Yes, mental illness is the real story.

Let's think about this list of mass killers:

    Dylan Klebold

    Eric Harris

    James Holmes

    Jared Loughner

    Seung-Hui Cho

Clearly, all of the above had mental illness. I think that everyone realizes that fact.

And autism is also part of the horror at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

Please see my post today at THE ASTUTE BLOGGERS: "When Autists Become Monsters."

Fortunately, few autists become Adam Lanzas.

You know, autism was almost unheard of until the 1930s. Why is that?

    Yes, it was a bombing.

In all the school attacks listed in various mainstream publications (hard copy and on the web), very few have mentioned the incident at Bath School in 1927.

Ban assault weaponry? Well, it can be tried. But the black market will always be there.
