Interesting Times

Never thought that I'd live long enough to see a chart like this one:

Bloomberg (January 20, 2016): One Gallon of Milk Is Now Worth About Two Gallons of Oil.

Obviously, many investors are losing their shirts.

  1. I was thinking yesterday that through the day I was getting richer and poorer and never noticed til I heard it on the news.
My concern about oil prices is whether this is production driven or consumption driven.
If the latter, are we facing another collapse?

    1. If the Saudis dropped their production and quit trying to drive the frackers out of business you'd see a rise but they seem interested in burning through their dollar reserves.

    2. Ed,
Right now, the Dow isn't tanking. Down a bit, but not tanking.

It will be interesting to see what happens throughout the day.

  2. The Saudi's can't run their competitors out of business unless oil falls to levels near their production costs once every ten years.

    1. How long can the Saudis survive with oil prices so low?

    2. Waiting for Iran / Russia to get stupid so America can flood the market with natural gas.

      Ka-Ching!

  3. AOW, I hope you're prepared for the storm.
It looks like Boston is going to catch a well deserved break after last year.

    1. Duck,
Tomorrow, I will publish a post about the coming winter blast.

Van is backed into the driveway at the back of our property.

      Food in.

      Shovel ready for use.

      Drawbridge up.

I still have more preparations to accomplish tomorrow morning.

Did you hear about the mess here last evening? Sheesh. Some people didn't get home from their evening commute until 4:00 A.M. today.

    2. It's been a while that I've been so thankful that my commute to the Reston area and back is around 4:00am and 2:00 respectively. The side roads were a hot mess even this morning. I can't confirm, because I have enough to get by, but rumor has it that one can't find a bag o'salt anywhere in the NOVA area.

  4. We are witnessing an epochal shift in world history, one of those points where events move fast enough that you can actually see them happening.

Europe is finished, due more to demographic collapse. Many believe the migration north from the failed societies of North Africa, Middle East and Central Asia will turn into a deluge of perhaps a billion people.

The institutions so patiently built by governments around the world no longer work. Global corporatists, billionaire robber barons and World Economic Forum Plutocrats roam the earth like a plague of vampires, masking their nefarious activities with "charity..."

Here in the US, DC has lapsed into a comfy bi-partisan Peronism. I would love to see Sanders and Trump bern down the rotten edifice that is our DC political establishment.

    1. SF,
      I agree with your assessment.

Too bad that we can't take a 30-minute peek into a panorama of the next 25 years. But I'm thinking that we would be frightened by what we see.

My generation made its own way -- for better or for worse. The generation which has just come of age will have to forge its own path. What my generation thinks of as "the rules" no longer applies.

I despise the establishment wings of both parties. Corrupt to the core!

    2. We lived in the best of times. How blessed we were.

    3. The 1880's to the 1950's saw perhaps the greatest leap in living standards for people in the west.

From the 1950's to now, we've been living in an unprecedented time of peace and prosperity. This post-WWII era was an historical aberration, a beautiful lacuna in an otherwise benighted and brutal span of human history. Ours was but one more effervescent star up the timeline of human history.

We built a society that protected us from Hobbes' State of Nature...

"In such condition there is no place for industry, because the fruit thereof is uncertain, and consequently, not culture of the earth, no navigation, nor the use of commodities that may be imported by sea, no commodious building, no instruments of moving and removing such things as require much force, no knowledge of the face of the earth, no account of time, no arts, no letters, no society, and which is worst of all, continual fear and danger of violent death, and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short."

We won't see anarchy, but people will look back on this past century as a golden age of wonder and beauty, and marvel at what a wonderful historical aberration it was.

  5. DAMN those rotten communists in the Democrap party. DAMN THEM! Damn them to HELL for how they have smashed our society from its moorings.

Throw Hellary Rotten Clintoon and her pedophile rapist husband down into the bowels of hell where they can rape and be anally raped by their fellow imps and demons.

May their followers, sycophants and clinging dingleberries be stricken with pimples, pustules, and flaming boils upon their asses. May their smart phones send them into lampposts, ditches, brick walls and deep holes in the ground.
