Sunday Funny

Now, of course, most canned cat food comes with pop-top cans.

  1. They respond the same way to the "pop" of the lid.

  2. Are you familiar with Paul Gallico? He was the author of The Snow Goose, and Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris and many other tales, but he loved cats, and wrote two whole books about them that I know, maybe more.

At any rate, if you're not already familiar with The Silent Miaow and The Abandoned, I know you -- and everyone else who loves cats -- would love them.

The Abandoned is a novel -- very touching, and wonderfully imaginative. The Silent Miaow is more of a picture book with captions and essays on life with felines.

I highly recommend them. Amazon.com is probably the best place to look.

  4. FT,
My local library has a copy of The Abandoned. Based on your recommendation, I'm going to read that book. Thanks for the heads up!

  5. Adrienne,
Mysti, the oldest kitty in the AOW household, is 15 years old. Although all the cat food cans that I use now have pop-top lids, Mysti remembers the sound of the can opener and comes running every time that I open any can (veggies, fruit, tuna).

The other two cats -- Amber and Cameo -- don't know the significance of a can opener AND do not like tuna, so they come only to the sound of a pop-top can.

  6. Glad to know The Abandoned is still in circulation, AOW! I hope you love it as much as I did.

My kitties are not given the run of the house, but have the huge -- and i mean HUGE -- porch and the Master Bedroom and Bath to run around in. That's a good 1,500 square feet of space, so please don't feel sorry for them. ;-)

Anyway, the signal THEY respond to after living here for nine years is the sound of their food dishes scraping on the brick floor of the porch or the tile floor of the bathroom. I make a point of moving the bottom of the dishes in little circles on the pavement before I set it down. THAT brings 'em on the double.

Believe it or not, my two have never heard a can opener, because I make a point of using an old-fashioned hand-tirned can opener. Every electric one I ever had either conked out in record time, or refused to work at all, so I went back to basics and have never regretted it.

Life would be dreary without our feline friends, wouldn't it?

  7. That's about right! Can opener, pop-top, the very smell of poultry cooking...

  8. Oh that's cute. We are on vacation, had to take our baby Penelope the Beagle to the Vet to board her until we get back. I hate to leave her but she gets car sick riding and would never do on a trip.

  9. Brooke!

Where have you been for the past months?

Yesterday, I cooked a turkey breast. Mysti loves turkey and was twirling like a ballerina the last hour or so -- when aroma filled the house.

  10. FT,
I have a manual can opener -- not an electric one. Mysti still comes running!

I make a point of moving the bottom of the dishes in little circles on the pavement before I set it down. THAT brings 'em on the double.

I've never used that method. Dusti, however, used to scoot her dish around to try to prompt me to feed her. Cameo picked up that same habit by observing Dusti. If Cameo's rattling of her food dish doesn't bring me into the kitchen to feed her, she flips the dish over!

  11. Debbie,
A carsick dog? Isn't that unusual?

  12. Mine hears the creaking of the pantry door where the cat treats and dry food is kept. Fastest black furry bolt of lightning on 4 legs....

  13. AOW: My new job has kept me super busy... I could tell you some tales!

Our Siamese goes CRAZY when she smells turkey in the oven. All the twirling you mentioned, and the most plaintive begging meows. It's too much!

  14. Brooke,
The Siamese cat that I had years ago used to sing during the last hour of turkey cooking. **wink**

That particular Siamese cat was not typically vocal. Only when she smelled roast turkey!

  15. Beamish,
Cats are famous for picking up on auditory clues.

Cameo, built like a tank in her senior years and with rear legs like ham hocks, can MOVE whenever she thinks that food will be served!
