Warren, that video was too funny. Yankovic always makes me laugh. I am sure AOW cringes at my blog, I still have to use Grammarly! LOL!! :) I use other sources too. Jen Psaki just reaffirmed that the President will only consider a Black Woman for the seat on the Supreme Court! Hey, isn’t that against our Constitution!
No, it is not against the Constitution. If a woman is qualified, she will be given the position on merit and character. Jackson from D.C. and Kruger from California both clerked for Justice Breyer. Unfortunately, as Candice Owens often says the democrats pander to African Americans and make promises they to them that they never keep, and this is how they garner votes. I believe as much as I loathe Joe Biden, he is going to make good on at least one campaign promise and that is to put a black woman in the position to fill Breyer's place. It really does not matter what we think, they will do as they please and select whom they wish, and that person will go through the senate procedures to be approved. This is basically how it has always been done. It is not unconstitutional to nominate any person whom the president deems competent. It is often the republicans and democrats that politicize the process. Justices decide according to law and what is best in any given situation for persons involved, not politics.
If you fact checked the history of SCOTUS, you would know that you do not even need to be an attorney to become a justice - one needs only to be a constitutional expert.
Allen Ayers of Williamsburg, Va.:
The United States Constitution contains no prerequisites for appointment to the Supreme Court.
You do need qualifications or even lack thereof to be considered for the Supreme Court - every single justice on the court, dating back to John Jay, has been a lawyer; each one either attended law school, took law classes, was admitted to the bar, or practiced law.
So, Biden is not doing anything unconstitutional. I believe whoever is appointed should be qualified, their race, religion, and gender should not be factored in. However, Biden and Harris have made everything about race to the appeasement of BLM.
Politically, Biden putting a black woman on the bench is a win/win as he's not going to lose his white supporters over it. It's called expanding the base and energizing a faction of voters by saying he's on their side.
Fun! But those details are important. To wit: Jesus said to the dying thief on the cross, today you shall be with me in paradise. VS Jesus said to the dying thief on the cross today, you shall be with me in paradise.
What a difference a comma makes! Also from the book of similar title: the panda eats shoots and leaves. VS. The panda eats, shoots and leaves.
I've had marketing meetings bog down while someone had to discuss the Oxford comma (which I omitted above) for 10 minutes.
@ "Jen Psaki just reaffirmed that the President will only consider a Black Woman..." Hmmm. Where was he when Janice Rogers Brown was near eternally left on hold in her appt. to the DC circuit?
@ Baysider The problem is, the original texts were in written languages that didn't use breaks, paragraphs, commas, spaces between words or paragraphs. AOW, tells me that sentence structure, in classical Latin, is indicated by use of a verb -as in German- and punctuation in Latin began with Church Latin.
I miss TMV every day. We were such close friends. Her death came out of nowhere. I've never completely gotten over the shock of learning about her death: I called her phone, and her daughter answered and said, "How much do you know?" My heart sank.
When she left my house in December 2019, she said, "I'll be back!" On March 29, 2020, she died of sudden cardiac death while in the ER -- and about to be sent home after all the tests found nothing wrong.
Several years ago San Diego formed a "CCA" which stands for "Community Choice Aggregation" and which is also known as a "Clean Power Exchange." This organization buys "green energy" and was touted to us as saving up to 35% over what we have been paying to San Diego Gas and Electric, and we will be saving the world while we are saving 35% on our power bill. Of course everyone voted yes on this miracle of modern economics and technology. (Actually, I voted no because I don't believe in the "free lunch theory.")
So SDG&E customers are now being switched to the new CCA this year, we are told, unless we call an 800 number to opt out. The power will still be billed by SDG&E, which is still distributing the power, merely no longer furnishing the power.
So, the question is asked, will our SDG&E bill go down, and if so how much? Well, the power supplied will go down, but the distribution fee and the various taxes will not. Okay, how much will the cost of the power be reduced? Will it be 35% as promised?
Well, no, because various acts of nature, mostly in the nature of climate change, have raised the cost of clean energy, so the cost of power will be reduced by only about 1% but you will still have the warm fuzzy feeling that you are saving the world.
Jayhawk, we got that announcement in Santa Monica about 2 years ago. It was accompanied by an inchoate series of instructions at 3 levels: 1) the dingbat announcement in the bill vacant of any useful information, 2) the referral to their website for some more empty rah, rah, and 3) I called them and got a secret link to a hidden part of the site where the whole mess was displayed with insufficient information to see what your choice would end up costing. I worked it all out on a spreadsheet, with the usage tier pricing for all options, made my choice, and it's MORE. It penciled as less, but not when the bill came.
Now, there's another addition coming. Best I figure that will be 30% more on the bill.
AOW - I have no 'rule' for the Oxford comma. Not even consistency, alas. (Just as I have no rule to always have a verb in my sentences!) But I tend to use it when it's more than 3 items. Is that bad?
Why does that not surprise me? I did forget to mention that this move comes on the heels of a government-approved 25% rate hike by SDG&E. If the rates were compared before that, the CCA or CPE or whatever it is would have carried a much higher cost than SDG&E. Why do I smell a very big rat here?
Baysider, But I tend to use it when it's more than 3 items.
That is not incorrect, but not using the Oxford comma is now considered "not wrong" -- and is preferred.
I still almost always use the Oxford comma.
Here is the Google answer about the Oxford comma:
Why you shouldn't use the Oxford comma? Why don't they use it? Many opponents of the Oxford comma claim that it makes a piece of writing sound more pretentious and stuffy, and that it can make things seem cluttered and redundant. Many magazine publishers renounce its use as well, because sentences loaded with commas take up valuable page space.
Republicans prefer the 'tiger' Life of pi story to the Democrats Insurance investigators 'evil cook' story/ history of the US. When it comes to the unifying aspects to be had from the aesthetics of epistemology, Left-wing critical theory is a loser.
Given that we can never know for sure what is true, isn't it better to enjoy what is beautiful, good, and uplifting rather than dwell on what is ugly, evil, and disillusioning?
@FJ, "Culture" is the mask you put on a pig. - Warren - Which reminds me; next Friday I'm putting up a new "Get it Off Your Chest" post with a -Philosophy Explained (in doughnuts)- mime. I think you'll get a good laugh.
I had just come back from an assignment in South America, and was trying to explain to my dad that one of the big reasons "they hate us" was because the US is a threat to their culture.
"When I hear the word 'culture' I reach for my gun" - Hermann Goehring (originally from Act 1, Scene 1 of Hanns Johst's play "Schlageter", which was performed in 1933 for Adolph Hitler's birthday. The original line was: "Wenn ich Kultur höre ... entsichere ich meinen Browning!" which means "When I hear "culture" I release the safety catch on my Browning!")
Culture is, after all, the Socialist's preferred form of fascism.

Baysider,

Apparently, "the grammarians" who control such things recently ditched the Oxford comma.

One of the reasons I overuse and misuse punctuation is for sake of clarity.
