The "Insufficiently Engaged" President

Thus has the Washington Post reported.

The most recent evidence of Obama's being "insufficiently engaged": Even MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski Can't Understand Why Obama Won't Visit the Border.

Remember back when — when, in New Orleans, Obama criticized George W. Bush for not visiting "down here on the ground" during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina?

Look here, Obama supporters.

You can whine all you like about "phony scandals" (IRS, Fast and Furious, Benghazi, the ObamaCare rollout, the VA delays, etc.).  But your man's failure to visit the border last week exposes your man as the narcissist and failed leader that he is.

Furthermore, in the process of this particular failure of leadership, Barack Hussein Obama has likely doomed any needed changes of or any needed adjustments to our nation's immigration policy.

The midterm elections will be held on November 4, 2014. We'll find out then if American voters have learned anything since November 2012.

(hat tip to Mr. AOW for the first link and the above video)

Having it both ways; here is Always On Watch ...

"But your man's failure to visit the border last week exposes your man as the narcissist and failed leader that he is."

    And your point is ...?

It is not like, Always On Watch and the Republican'T Party are not already screaming that President Obama is a narcissist and failed leader. So what else is new with Always On watch?

Had the President visited the border, Always On Watch and the Republican'T Party would have screamed that President Obama was the narcissist and failed leader.

"... Barack Hussein Obama has likely doomed any needed changes of or any needed adjustments to our nation's immigration policy."

    Ya. Right.

And who exactly writes immigration law? Ema Nymton seems to remember it it Congress who is responsible for writing the law ... except when the Republican'T Party is the majority in the House Of Representatives.

So sue the President when he does something while the HOR has done nothing.

And when the voters turn out to turn-out the Republican'T Party, Always On Watch can always fall back on to the Mississippi losers' claim of fraud.

    1. Ema,
You have no idea what I might have said if Obama had visited the border.

You need to check the facts about the 2008 law (from the New York Times (emphases mine):

“This is a piece of legislation we’re very proud to sign,” a White House spokesman, Tony Fratto, told reporters on Dec. 23, 2008, as the president put his pen to the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008, named for a 19th-century British abolitionist. “This program has been very effective around the world in trying to stop trafficking in persons.”

      [...]

Originally pushed by a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers as well as by evangelical groups to combat sex trafficking, the bill gave substantial new protections to children entering the country alone who were not from Mexico or Canada by prohibiting them from being quickly sent back to their country of origin.

      [...]

Democrats have shown reluctance to endorse narrow immigration law changes after House Republicans balked at a much more sweeping overhaul and seem hesitant to tinker too much with the William Wilberforce Act.

      [...]

Immigration advocates say that they see no need for changes in the law and that the Obama administration should be able to work within the existing framework to bring some order under a law that is working to meet its original purpose....

    2. Ema,
      A few more points:

The first link in the blog post is from the WaPo -- clearly, not a Tea Party periodical.

You have not explained how Obama could so strongly condemn GWB for not visiting New Orleans "down here on the ground," yet Obama himself won't even fly over the border to take a look. Nor has he visited a single one of the holding centers. His "reasoning": he is not interested in photo ops. Like all recent Presidents, Obama engages in photo ops all the time. Obama's excuse for not visiting the border is lame.

  2. The Washington Times: ANALYSIS and OPINION:

Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, 28, the soldier who was taken by Taliban militants and held prisoner for five years, will return to active military duty as early as Monday at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, The New York Times first reported.

Sgt. Bergdahl — who was recently freed when President Obama steered a prisoner exchange that sent five suspected terrorists to Qatar from Guantanamo Bay — will live among his fellow soldiers in the barracks, the New York Daily News reported. A pair of military officials will be on hand to help him acclimate to duty.

On April 1, the U.S. economy dropped a whopping 2.9 percent for the first three months of the year (no fooling). The American workforce participation rate fell to a 40-year low. One-third of people aged 18-29 have moved back in with their parents. Millions of Americans this summer will enjoy yet another “staycation”: They just can’t afford to go to the beach or the mountains, even for a week — again.

Cut to President Obama: He’s eating shave ice in Honolulu; playing golf (some 180 rounds so far); jetting off to Martha’s Vineyard for a 15-day vacation in a $12 million house on the beach. He’s playing pool in Colorado (he turned down an offer from a young heckler to smoke some weed); eating barbecue with a college student in Minnesota; hitting fundraiser after fundraiser across the country (at $228,000 an hour for his swank 747 super-jumbo jet).

    ht.

    ReplyDelete
  3. Cut back to the economy. By the end of April (no fooling), the federal government had set a new record for total tax receipts, pulling in $1,735,030,000,000. Yes, you people out there sent in $1.7 trillion — in seven months. It didn’t matter, though: The government still ran a $306 billion deficit. By the end of fiscal year 2014, you’ll have sent in more than $3 trillion total, but the feds will spend $3.65 trillion, a deficit of some $650 billion, according to the White House Office of Management and Budget.

The job of president is, in large part, about perception — style over substance. The president really can’t do much (especially this one); he gets blamed for things that aren’t his fault (but also takes credit for things that aren’t his doing, especially this one).

In the end, all the president has is his character. It’s like Andrew Shepherd says in “The American President”: “For the last couple of months, Senator Rumson has suggested that being president of this country was, to a certain extent, about character I can tell you without hesitation — being president of this country is entirely about character.” (If it’s in a Hollywood movie, it must be true.)

Democratic presidents are always the first to forget that once in the White House. President Clinton’s character went up in a puff of smoke with his love affair with an intern. More, though, he had won office with the motto “I Feel Your Pain,” but each summer he jetted off for three weeks to Martha’s Vineyard, where the residents never feel anything close to pain. The lapdog media ignored the hypocrisy.

Mr. Obama is now in full campaign mode, trying to save the Senate in the 2014 mid-term elections. At each stop, he rails against the “1 percent,” berates the greedy “rich” (which he defines as anyone making $200,000), decries income inequality. Yet come vacation time, he, too, is off to the tony Vineyard for a fortnight in a mansion.

“The seven-bedroom, nine-bath, 8,100-square-foot house, sits on a 10-acre lot and is assessed at more than $12 million. It features 17 rooms in total, expansive water views of Vineyard Sound, an infinity pool and hot tub, and a dual tennis-basketball court,” the Martha’s Vineyard Times reported.

Forget that the United States is deep into what Mr. Obama dramatically declares a “humanitarian crisis,” that the Middle East is a powder keg about to blow, that Iraq has all but fallen to Islamist terrorists. (Why not forget; the president has.) But as Americans continue to pour their hard-earned cash into government coffers, maybe the president — for appearances, if nothing else — could cut back a bit, too.

Not the Obamas. They won the White House and, by God, they’re going to enjoy their time there, no matter the cost. And who cares what you think, anyway? They’ve done so since the beginning, even during what Mr. Obama called “the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.”
Remember that back then, Mr. Obama had shut down the White House to visitors, citing the cost of security. No, the Obamas’ weren’t about to trim the number of vacations they take each year so taxpayers could visit “America’s House.”

The Obamas couldn’t care less about the perception of living high while many hardworking Americans are struggling to get by. It’s different when it’s a Democrat. They’re entitled to a good life, a better life than you, anyway. And the media will never play the hypocrisy card, because the ends always justify the means.

The Obamas are truly despicable human beings! The utter pretentiousness of the Obamas, their narcisscism, and their hubris towards average Americans is inexcuable in my book! The fact that Americans couldn't see how disgusting the Obamas are as human beings in 2008 and 2012 shows how much this generation of Americans lacks any shred of wisdom and insig

    1. What you said above. IRMC, is interesting and doubtless factual, but do you really mean to imply that because "The Nation" is suffering, her leaders OUGHT to suffer TOO at virtually the same level?

That IS what your long condemnatory dissertation seems to imply.

If so, don't you realize that you are in effect subscribing to the politics of ENVY, SPITE and MALICE fostered against "The Rich" and "Successful" (and latterly the Modesty Prosperous) by the Left since the late nineteenth-century?

Overt condemnation of "Conspicuous Consumption" and the glorification of Envy and the Lust for Revenge -- both deemed Deadly Sins in Christian Thought -- come straight from Karl Marx's Playbook.

It isn't Mr. Obama's enjoyment of the perquisites of office -- something partaken of freely by virtually all his predecessors, albeit each in his own way, -- that should bother us. It is his spectacular INEFFECTIVENESS in combatting the nation's ills that shoud concern us.

I assure you that, even if he spent his tenure in office wearing sackcloth and ashes, ate nothing but bread and water, and subjected himself to public flagellation each day, it wouldn't improve his performance as the nation's CEO one jot or tittle.

  5. All I can say to Ms. Nymton is that she must know full well that politics has come to down to a matter of MUTUAL VILIFICATION, OBFUSCATION and CONDEMNATION . Political rhetoric consists perennially of charged rhetoric, lies, half truths, selected facts. Every bit of it is both THEATRICAL and certainly HYPOCRITICAL.

It's like the Turkey Trot from the Roaring Twenties. "EVERYBODY's doin it, doin' it, dcin' it." ;-)

"Venting" must be fun, because so many love to indulge in it, but other than providing a bit of temporary relief for the "venter" or "ventette," whichever the case may be, I can't see that it advances the state of Civilization one iota, can you?

Thanks again are due to AOW for having many significant facts at her disposal and for presenting them clearly and concisely, and for countering broad accusations and foolish assumptions calmly and intelligently.

  17. Socialism is all about turning people against each other. Poor against Rich, Blacks against whites, and so on. Just like the pigs in Orwell's Animal Farm, socialists believe that, "All animals are equal” But’ I’m here to tell you that we are not! We are not animals, and we are not equal.
It's funny how ALL these liberal -progressive and democratic maniacs always seem to bring race and racism into every conversation that challenges Hussein Obama. Or if it’s not about race, then it’s about “Slavery” which is also about race! Our dear liar in chief has actually put America back several decades in my belief to back into the 70s with his socialist acts, and put Blacks in America back even further - the forced health care is ridiculous we are a capitalism country but this was allowed wow.. ok so this is my concern he has ended fed unemployment extensions completely effective December 29th 2012 so I will be homeless, jobless still (though he claims there is so many jobs to obtain), and foodless for me and my children. They say well hey take a job that has lower standards LOL they won't hire because they scream over qualified--- what everyone in America already knows but the Liberals won't acknowledge, is that Obama wants is everyone on a socialist standard of living everyone on the same page owning 1 car, 1 home (barely or renting) and collecting some type of government aid wether it be food stamps, cash aid, mortgage assistance programs, something government based assistance but not unemployment because that isn't considered assistance its insurance. This is a sign of socialism anyone who states it's not is clearly uneducated. They say unemployment rate is lower and the economy is amazing on TV because no one will be on unemployment they will be fucking HOMELESS they only care about how the numbers look. I been working since I was 13 years old averaging 70 thousand per year or more since I was 20 years old and I am getting a low blow from the government I have no trust and no love for the system that has evolved the way it is. When you call unemployment here in California they hang up on you it says we have too many callers we are assisting this has been like this for too long are own government that we fund screwing and bending us over. There are a lot of arguments about whether communism, socialism, and liberalism are the same thing. What shouldn't be arguable is that they're all something that nobody in their right mind wants it here. What happened to the American Dream, where everyone wanted to be rich? What is wrong with being rich? When you degrade the successful people in a society to give it to the less successful, you naturally reduce the number of successful people and encourage more people to fail. Why do we discourage being successful?
These politicians are public servants however they treat us like peasants. I'm done laying down and taking it with no lube.

      Good question!

      Let us consider the following....

      From the Chicago Tribune:

U.S. classrooms prepare for flood as migrants become pupils

The record flood of Central American children crossing the U.S. border is stretching funds and setting off improvisation at public schools.

While politicians spend the summer fighting over how to turn back the tide, school leaders across the country are struggling to absorb a new student population the size of Newark, New Jersey. More than 40,000 children, many of them fresh from violent, harrowing journeys, have been released since October to stateside relatives as courts process their cases.

"These kids were homesick and heartbroken," said Robin Hamby, a family specialist for Fairfax County Public Schools in suburban Washington, which began feeling the surge almost as soon as it began three years ago.

Her Virginia district employs more teachers who work with non-English speakers than ever, and wrote a curriculum to reunite children and parents, many of whom haven't seen one another in years. Houston is increasing training and translation. Los Angeles nurses are working overtime to screen for emotional trauma created on the journey north.

      [...]

One district was Fairfax, which had 5,192 Central American students in June, a 22 percent increase from 2011. As their ranks swelled, Hamby, the family specialist, fielded calls from teachers and social workers who sensed trouble....

Please read the above link for additional details.

Should we ever send these children back to their place of origin , how do we know, with exactitude, where to send them? I presume that, at least, some are not accompanied by adults and almost all lack any specific documentation. I see a logistical nightmare with this issue alone!

Take them to their nation's embassies and say, "We are returning your citizens to you." In lieu of that, take them to the embassies of Mexico and say, "You let these people pass through your nation, so you can return these citizens of whatever countries to their nations of origin."

  26. I hope Obama never goes down there, just to spite the cons. I don't blame him at all. You conservatives deserve none of his respect whatsoever. He should only do what conservatives ask of him if he absolutely has to, and doesn't have to here. And the sleazy conservatives just want to make a circus of all this anyway. Obama should not be feeding into that steaming pile of political feces. Screw the cons. I'm glad he hasn't gone down there. Proud of him.

  27. Gassing them? Like..... errrr..... the chlorine the Germans released in WW I? Or the VX with a toe tag in place minutes later? Either/or, gassing is not quick nor painless. Quick - is a bolt of lightning. Painless - is a "Michael Jackson" I.V.

Humane - is to enforce our existing laws. When illegal immigrants know that our border are not permeable, the surges will cease.

Native born Americans are now treated as Americans by default. More care, concern, lavish attention, funds, & goods and services are given to illegal immigrants. This is both a travesty and also treason against the taxpayers.

American citizens go bankrupt via medical bankruptcy. I know because that travesty occurred to my sister-in-law. She and her husband had health insurance, but the bills were so high that their family assets were lost despite health insurance (the loophole known as usual and allowable charges (UAC's); on the other hand, the illegal immigrant who shared the hospital room with my sister-in-law vanished, leaving behind a bill in excess of $100,000.

This kind of thing plays out all over the United States -- and has been doing so for at least two decades.

  29. I'll never forget how pleased I was that Bush didn't go down on the ground at Katrina..it was such a nightmare and the last thing those folks needed was their aid being stopped or interrupted by a presidential landing..

I don't care if he doesn't go to the border; but you can't blame him for not wanting to have pictures taken of him and what he's created. Imagine? Instead, the guy who doesn't like photo ops was posing at the pool table and at the bar all weekend. Not a good image.

      That's a good point.

But there are other factors involved (besides the pr factor, of course)....When Americans are suffering, they do need to see their leader caring about them.

The symbolism in such situations is important. Abraham Lincoln knew that when he went to Gettysburg and delivered one of the finest speeches ever.

the guy who doesn't like photo ops was posing at the pool table and at the bar all weekend. Not a good image.

And what does that say about his priorities? Sheesh.

Don't forget the sheer LYING the Left did about Bush not having 'done anything' for Katrina, too. He followed the laws. I know Lefties don't quite grasp that, but...he did.

  30. What he's created, how do you figure that. z?

Why aren't there many children from Nicaragua?
Putin's visiting, must be a leftist hell hole that people will do anything to escape?

Why Guatemala where Saint Ronnie Raygun started a civil war that killed hundreds of thousands?
Why Honduras that is run by drug gangs in testimony to our successful War on Drugs
Or Salvador, another of Saint Ronnie's playgrounds.
Are the stories about the violence in these countries true and what did Obama do to create that violence?

But just ship them back, it's the Christian thing to do, right?

Why do you think the woman's educational budget needs and the needs of these kids are necessarily exclusive?

Why do you think the woman's educational budget needs and the needs of these kids are necessarily exclusive?

Because we don't have the resources (capital, human, infrastructure, etc.).

Duck, please share with us what you personally have done to help Central America? When was your last missions trip there? And please don't throw in the "Christian thing" only when you find it handy to smear Christianity, Mr. Catholic. It makes you look ridiculous.
I know it's very difficult for you to accept a Black woman's incredulity that Obama's spending this much money on illegals when her own children are suffering but this is America and we can't take in every disenfranchised person here. Why not empty Somalia , the Congo, Syria? Where do you stop, Ducky?
WHat's a few more billion dollars to a Leftie? I get it.

    5. Duck,
All of us have certain worldviews, and those worldviews are the lenses through which we view all situations and all current events.

That said, the particular political administration under which certain situations occur "owns" that situation. Right now, we are seeing the fruits of Obama's management of immigration. Ronald Reagan is dead, and anything he may have done doesn't make conservatives collectively guilty.

Furthermore, the immediate situation with this flood of border surgers is critical and will have long-lasting results if things continue to go along as they are going right now.

Calling Z a coward is accomplishes nothing.

  32. From Schools a haven for many unaccompanied minors (emphases mine):

...Schools and districts in metropolitan areas such as Washington, Houston and Miami have seen an uptick in the number of these students and anticipate more could enroll this fall. "They have their hearts in the right places, but it's a difficult task," said Randy Capps, director of research for U.S. programs at the Migration Policy Institute, a nonpartisan Washington think tank.

The government estimates that 90,000 children, primarily from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, could make the journey alone by this fall, and that as many as 145,000 of them could arrive next year. They often come to join a parent, many times escaping criminal gangs or extreme poverty.

In school, they frequently require special resources like English language and mental health services that already are strained because of budget cuts.

In Miami, the school board voted to seek federal aid after Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said 300 foreign-born students, many from Honduras and traveling alone, enrolled toward the end of the school year. He said the district has both a "moral and legal requirement" to educate the students, some illiterate in both English and Spanish. The cost is about $1,950 more per student than it gets from the state, he said.

"They need to be fed. They need to be clothed. They need to be cared for and then taught," Carvalho said.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Attorney General Eric Holder issued new guidance in May reminding districts that a 1982 Supreme Court ruling gives all children the right to enroll in school, regardless of immigration status.

  33. I have NEVER suggested that we be SILENT, AOW, only that we stop this STILTED, RITUALIZED, RELENTLESS OUTPOURING of insults, witless observations, and bilious rhetoric.

I wish I knew what we could and should do improve the political landscape, and thus our personal prospects, but I'm not smart enough for that. I only know that what we ARE doing is destructive in every conceivable way. We are mauling each other and enervating ourselves while tearing ourselves to shreds -- and for WHAT?

How could this behavior CHANGE anything for the BETTER? HOW could it possibly improve our prospects, enrich our minds or refine our character?

As I see it, what WE do is really no better than the kind of nattering battering negativity Ducky and afew others of that dismal falsely humanitarian persuasion share with us, and the snorting, sneering, gnashing of teeth, stamping of feet and nose-thumbing routinely indulged in at so-called "progressive" sites.

  36. Excellent article on the topic at hand. Excerpt:

...Political actions have consequences, and these are the results that the President's penchant for unilateral executive action produces. His insistence on changing the law outside the legislative process, no matter how well-intentioned, has made the problem exponentially worse.

President Obama's DACA program falsely fueled hope for thousands of would-be immigrants seeking opportunity for their children. Now those parents who traveled with their children and thousands of unaccompanied children are detained and being carted around the United States as our government attempts to sort out their return....

    1. Wondering when this would come up.

Somehow a judicial decision to return a boy to his father which was lambasted by the right for not letting Elian stay is used to analyze the appropriate status of thousands of children who may in fact qualify for refugee status.

    2. Duck,
Because Holder, back then, upheld the idea of returned a child to his parents and to his homeland. Now, Holder has taken very nearly the opposite position -- and at the point of a gun. Excerpt from the link:

Eric Holder’s storied past is little reported. Less we forget, Human Events gives us this reminder that while a tearful Eric whines about the poor illegal gang bangers who are washing ashore via Mexico, he had a totally different attitude for the infamous Cuban Gonzalez case back in the day. So Eric didn’t need to follow any rule of law dispensing with Elian Gonzalez....

And yet it was (then) Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder who concocted the “legal” cover for the INS to mace, kick, stomp, and gun-butt their way into the home of Elian Gonzalez’s legal custodians (legal U.S. citizens and residents all) on the morning of April 22, 2000, wrench a bawling 6-year-old child from his family at machine-gun point, and bundle him off to Castro’s terror-sponsoring fiefdom, leaving 102 people (legal U.S. citizens and residents all) injured, some seriously.

  38. Coming to a neighborhood near you...Lynn officials: Illegal immigrant children are stressing city services. Excerpt:

LYNN, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Lynn is a municipality on the brink. Key department officials say a recent influx of illegal immigrant children and families in the city is stressing almost every service from trash collection to healthcare.

"We have been aware of the unaccompanied children issue for quite a while, and we were able to absorb a lot of these children early on," said Lynn Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy. "But now it's gotten to the point where the school system is overwhelmed, our health department is overwhelmed, the city's budget is being sustainably altered in order of accommodate all of these admissions in the school department."

Flanagan Kennedy says the first contact for immigrant arrivals in the city is the school system.

The amount of new foreign born student admissions has nearly doubled in the last two years. This school year alone saw more than 600 new admissions. Among those students, 248 were from Guatemala. Flanagan Kennedy says of those 248 children, 126 were illegal, undocumented minors.

"They are not literate in any language, so they do need some skills. And I assume they are enrolling in school to receive those skills," said Catherine Latham, Lynn's superintendent of schools

Latham says me the increase in new students has created overcrowding, forced her to hire more staff, and has impacted state testing scores and drop-out numbers....
