  1. Canada has invoked their Emergency Powers act for the first time. What happened to civil disobedience and the right of protest?

    1. Correction, for the first time since WW11. I think this is ridiculous. It is a peaceful protest and a righteous one. Trudeau is a dictator - at least that is what I wrote up at my blog. I cannot stand that man.

    2. Trudeau Sr. also suspended rights during peacetime under War Powers, but it was a different act meant for War time, not peacetime emergencies. Beamish knows all about it.

I suppose now we can expect Permanent Emergency powers during peacetime. Every criminal and protesting demonstrator is now a terrorist...

    3. Its the first time since this law was passed in the 80's.

The previous law was used three times: WWI, WWII, and during a Quebecoise terror attack.

    1. What is it like living in a country where the government can freeze your back account for donating $10 to a Christian fund-raising website? Would you leave your money in those banks? There are going to be consequences for Canada, mostly of the un-intended variety.

As for us, its' time we built a NORTHERN wall...

    13. Yes they will. The Canadian elites must follow their masters in DC... before the populist "movement" gains steam.

    16. We can only imagine the contents of the squish video of that guy that stood in front of the tanks in Tiennamen Square, so the horror is little more that what the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre fooled you into thinking you saw. At the other end of the spectrum is probably badly made Palestinian propaganda mockumentaries.

If you remove the "sovereign citizen" nonsense of the "Freedom Convoy's" abortive manifesto, and curb the yokels showing up with trucks full of guns and bombs with a furtive Molotov cocktail supply chain, I might agree with the intent of getting rid of Covid mandates. I don't follow them. I don't have to challenge the government's monopoly on force when it lacks the manpower to force me to do a damned thing.

The "Freedom Convoy" is perhaps off on the wrong foot. Becoming a speed bump wouldn't be my first choice.

    17. That's where we differ, beamish. You blame the protestors, and I blame the politicians in Ottawa for not listening.

The protestors argument was "trucks" and the parliament's interpretation of it was "insurrection". They then said that they'd "heard" the protestors arguments, and that they should now remove their "trucks".... and then immediately told their Praetorians to "crush the insurrection" by removing the "trucks".

If ever their was a failure to communicate, THIS was it.

      Delete
    18. Trudeau's communication style is a recipe for what Slavoj Zizek labels "Divine violence".

So what is divine violence? Its place can be defined in a very pre cise formal way. Badiou already elaborated the constitutive excess of representation over the represented: at the level of the Law, the state Power only represents the interests, etc. of its subjects; it is serving them, responsible to them, and itself subjected to their control; how ever, at the level of the superego underside, the public message of responsibility etc., is supplemented by the obscene message of un conditional exercise of Power: laws do not really bind me, I can do to you WHATEVER I WANT, I can treat you as guilty if I decide to do so, I can destroy you if I say so ... This obscene excess is a necessary constituent of the notion of sovereignty—the asymmetry is here structural, i.e., the law can only sustain its authority if subjects hear in it an echo of the obscene unconditional self-assertion. And the people's "divine violence" is correlative to this excess of power: it is its counterpart—it targets this excess and undermines it.

    20. "If the basis of popular government in peacetime is virtue, the basis of popular government during a revolution is both virtue and terror; virtue, without which terror is baneful; terror, without which virtue is powerless. Terror is nothing more than speedy, severe and inflexible justice; it is thus an emanation of virtue; it is less a principle in itself, than a consequence of the general principle of democracy, applied to the most pressing needs of the patrie [homeland, fatherland]." - Maximillien Robespierre, taproot of the left-wing "kill people for their own good" ideology tree.

The trucker sans-culotte wannabes don't give a shit about the collateral damage they will inflict upon people that might otherwise agree with their cause.

    21. ...and in this version, it's the MSM who are baking all the briskets for Joel.

The only real problem with the show is that it pretends that there were female versions of Lenny Bruce performing comedy in the 50s/60's. Its another re-imagining of the past like "Queen's Gambit" that pretends that there were also female Chess Grand Masters. I guess that our "woke" hyper-reality still suffers from a lack of female and minority role models.

You know damned well if some other group of dickheads - BLM, Greenpeace, NAMBLA, whatever - shut down trade and transit with trucks, hippie sit-ins, roadside bombs, whatever... you'd want to strafe the bastards with autocannons.

As I said, I don't care why they are protesting. Find a different way to protest. When the protest assumes to overstep boundaries to inescapably scream in my ear, it's time to mulch a protester. My way to anything is largely by road and highway. Anyone illegally blocking my freedom of movement better have a tank. With a big piss bottle so they can stay inside it.

    31. I contribute this to the discussion above...Vlad Tepes Testimony On Downtown Ottawa (emphases mine):

The entire core of downtown was blocked off by police and whatever all those brown uniforms are that say police, but obviously are not a civilian force. They in fact did, what the truckers were accused of doing. Blocking streets completely and making the downtown core inaccessible.

In fact the protestors did none of those things for the whole three weeks. The streets always had a lane open for emergency vehicles, and people could come and go from hotels with at least as much ease as a normal day in Montreal or Toronto.
Certainly NYC. We were there doing interviews and at the various protest areas and at no point was commerce interfered with.

      Well that’s not quite true.

The mayor of Ottawa, Jim Watson, ordered all businesses to close in order to inconvenience the protestors. So yes, commerce was affected, but had they done what the truckers asked, open up and not ask for passports or made people mask up, they would have had the best 3 weeks in years.

No doubt authorities blame the protest for the loss of business.

The first sign of the authoritarian state is that it operates on lies, and works very hard to protect those lies. Usually at the expense of the citizenry in every way expense could be measured.

Today, on my way to photograph the giant gate blocking Sussex from Rideau st. a petite Romanian woman approached us and said, “I’m from Romania. I have lived your future. See you in 50 years”. I knew what she meant. But she turned to explain anyway. “Fifty years” she said, “is how long it will take before you get your basic freedoms back”.

    32. The flaw of left-wing Bakuninist, Emma Goldmanist, Trumpist thinking is if you have to use terrorism to provoke a government response to spin propaganda from for sympathy - "help help I'm being repressed!" - you weren't being repressed in the first place.

  6. "The trucker sans-culotte wannabes don't give a shit about the collateral damage they will inflict upon people that might otherwise agree with their cause."

Perhaps they care about the tree of liberty. A government which is insensitive to the common sense logic and appeals of their People; a government which believes ratcheting up the punishment against the cry for civil liberties and freedom - is a government which is deserving of being shaken a bit in their moorings. Respect and fear are a two way street. Twiddle Trudeau does not respect the spirit of democracy nor the issue of due process for the citizen in a court of law.

What is worth fighting for? It was the same thing for which we gave millions of our own youth in WW II. It is called freedom. Too bad the beachhead is now our own shores. Freedom. Die free. Or die a slave. Django, baby.

Well, no, Thought Criminal. We would not attach a bomb to a ship, as did the French against Green Peace. (Rainbow Warrior)

The rest of us might listen to our neighbors, not call them dickheads, and consider their concerns. It only became a demand when a concern fell on deaf ears.

One man's dickhead, is another man's citizen seeking freedom from Draconian mandates.

The experiment has failed. In the last couple of weeks, everyone going to get checked in my region has "the flu". God forbid they learn they have COVID after three jabs and loss of liberty with medical martial law.
