According to just released @WSJ @NBCNews poll: @realDonaldTrump is the second most popular President within his own party at this point in his first term since WWII. (W post 9/11 is all time high). Remarkable. Yet more evidence, if you needed it, that Twitter isn’t real life. pic.twitter.com/YWIfzMryYB— Clay Travis (@ClayTravis) July 22, 2018
Astounding, huh?
Meanwhile, remember this, as some in the Congressional GOPe disparage the POTUS at every opportunity:
Bob Corker is a Republican isn't he?
ReplyDeleteI thought Flake was supposed to be one too.
It still shocks me the Trey Gowdy advised President Trump's advisors to resign.
Imagine if they had some party Unity what could be accomplished.
I'd never seen ANY politician slam anyone from either side of the aisle as nastily as Corker did yesterday....Flake, I expected, because this is how he is. Gowdy drives me crazy; usually he's spot-on, then he advised that, you're right.
DeleteYes, without Unity, the Dems might as well win the midterms...

DeleteI don’t really get the point of inter-party popularity contests; but more importantly, the Legislative Branch ceded much of it’s power to the Executive. Having done so, they are not much more relevant that a bunch of baboons.

ReplyDeleteThe self-inflicted damage is already done. AG Magoo christened the SS Mueller and the unending Hillary Democrat fishing expedition. At some point I'm sure they'll be going through the first family's underwear drawers.
DeleteRosenstein has been able to turn cases over to States Attorneys namely New York thus this witch hunt will continue in perpetuity.
DeleteYes, and 90% of it is SESSION'S fault. Appointing Dribblepuss is Trump's biggest mistake to date –– by far.

DeleteA few years from now, it will be obvious that President Donald J Trump is the greatest president since George Washington.
ReplyDeleteDoes that include Lincoln and FDR (just running a stick across your bars)?
DeleteMy bet is he'll be understood as worse than Harding.
http://newsroom.ucla.edu/releases/FDR-s-Policies-Prolonged-Depression-5409
DeleteI strongly doubt Trump rates as the 'greatest' anything but i hope so, for America's sake.
Kid, we have a country now where many actually believe in no borders. That says too much about some of us to allow ourselves the luxury of believing that America can even survive as the great country we've been. And that we can be called xenophobes for even saying anything like that is even scarier and more dangerous.
Well, congratulations, Z, you found a link which must surely settle the matter.
DeleteIt seems to take the same tunnel visioned view and focuses on a recession in 1938 when FDR was convinced to abandon Keynesian stimuli and balance the federal budget. Didn't work well.
It ignores the fact that he reversed the policies that were successful previously.
Not an uncommon right wing perspective.

DeleteDuck quacked:
ReplyDeleteMy bet is he'll be understood as worse than Harding.
Really?
Second-quarter GDP jumps 4.1% for best pace in nearly four years.
Few points:
ReplyDelete1. If growth is good, why does he want to screw around with an inflationary trade war? Hint: He's dangerous.
2. Were you saying the same thing about Obama in 2014 when combined second and third quarter growth was 10% ?
3. How much did exporters rushing orders to get under the tariff date artificially inflate growth? Export were up 10%, an artificial number.
4. Government spending especially defense is up and contributed to the growth figure. Are conservatives now supporting deficit spending?
5. The Fed is concerned about inflation and he's trying to intervene in Fed policy. Dumb move.
The business cycle is functioning but his policies are questionable especially the trade war which hasn't shown its effect yet.
Duck,
DeleteKeep telling yourself all those things to make yourself feel better.
Is Ducky wrong on point #2?
DeleteCI,
DeleteHonestly, I don't recall those numbers for BHO.
Which year(s) was that? I did lose a lot of time when I was so very ill -- yet pretending that nothing was wrong -- and when I first had to assume the caregiving role.
AOW - According to CBS, FWIW: “While Mr. Trump praised the 4.1 percent annual growth rate in the second quarter, the economy exceeded that level four times during the Obama presidency: in 2009, 2011 and twice in 2014.
DeleteIn purely numerical terms, a larger shift took place in the second quarter of 2014, when the economy went from contracting by 1 percent to growing at a rate of 5.1 percent. ”
According to Fortune Mag website, quarterly GDP rose
Delete3.9% in 2009-Q4 and 2010-Q, 4.6% in 2011-Q4, 4% in 2013-Q4 and 5.2% in 2014-Q3. In those days, quarterly
GDP were not something to brag about. Now one is a
huuuuge deal.

DeleteA Conservative would refute with facts, as opposed to, well..... what we see here.....
DeleteAgain, confirmation of the obvious.
There were in fact four quarters during the Obama administration that were 4% or over. As "BB" says it's not a big deal but it's also necessary to point out the Trump number is not a big deal either.
DeleteThe important point here is how the media have the base in a lather. Il Duce has done something absolutely unique to listen to them.
Ducky - Not dissimilar to Leftist orthodoxy, right wing doctrine holds that all positive trends began on Inauguration Day.
DeleteAnd “...... derangement syndrome” is not limited to one party.
CI & BB Idaho,
DeleteAha! The dates explain why I didn't notice.
2009-Q4 and 2010-Q, 4.6% in 2011-Q4: dealing with Mr. AOW's stroke and post-stroke issues.
4% in 2013-Q4: I had surgery for a detached retina and lost many months because of the bubbles in my left eye.
5.2% in 2014-Q3: I should have caught that one, but didn't. Perhaps the deaths of two dear friends that fall?
FWIW, recent essay in Slate.

DeleteFranco,
DeleteThose views were held worldwide -- mostly, anyway.
Remember the case of Oto Benga? See THIS, and note all the famous scientists who signed onto the idea of locking this man up in a cage. In the 20th Century and in the Bronx Zoo!
One would think that a refutation of the afore referenced "fake news" would actually be germane to the topic at hand....otherwise, it's merely more...."fake news".
DeleteOut of curiosity, why AOW, do you refer to freethinke as “Franco”?

DeleteYawn......yet again, FT fails to actually refute the 2014 GDP numbers. Preferring instead to flail about with tiresome personal anecdotes and unrelated opinion.
DeleteCI,
DeleteI address each and every commenter by the handle that commenter uses.
Fair enough.
DeleteEach quarter's GDP measures the percentage of growth or contraction based on the previous quarter. GDP was unstable, with wild swings up and down during Obama's recovery, which was one of the worst in our history.
DeleteThe biggest GDP quarterly spikes during Obama came after a crappy previous quarter, making it mathematically easier to get a good number.
One non-partisan thing I do not like about GDP is that it includes government spending, which is not economic activity. If government splurges a quarter, that will spike the GDP.
The Slate article explained it pretty well, and was surprisingly even-handed. IMO, Slate descended into leftwing kookism when Michael Kinsley left as editor--he is a solid, non-nutball liberal with some libertarian tendencies.
DeleteI agree with the article about the GOP not needing to do the tax cut and stimulate an already growing economy, but that probably feeds into President Trumps "Trade War" strategy. Tariffs are not the end game; they are the threat that results if other nations won't reach a new, more equitable deal with us. President Trump--even his critics on the reasonable left understand--is bargaining from a position of economic strength.
We will cut a new deal with Europe, even if it is only marginally better for the US, because Team Trump understands we can't have a full-blown trade war with Ye Olde Continent.
Mexico's incoming trade minister has already announced Mexico expects a New NAFTA to be done and signed within the next few months.
That leaves China, and that is the target President Trump is really going to put the screws to. Having set things right with Europe, Canada, Mexico (and enjoying stable trading with other nations like Korea and Japan), the US is in a dominant global position to squeeze China hard. This is the point where, if China don't play, manufacturers leave and find other places set up shop. Yes, this creates major supply chain disruptions, but the economic prosperity makes it easier, and even worst-case, everybody doesn't abandon China, but they lose their dominance based on so much concentrated there.

DeleteThe GOP has been very supportive of the president. Yet, it the last 25 years registered Republicans have dropped 6%, 8% among women and 15% among college educated. While most appear to be switching to Independent, the Dems lost no one,
ReplyDeletebut gained 2% of women and 15% of college graduates. Which would seem to explain that while the president is hugely popular with his party, his overall disapproval rate is quite large.
