Defeating Trump?

The Trump Train

This essay by Helen Delich Bentley, Republican member of the House of Representatives from 1985 to 1995, asserts that blocking Trump from being the nominee would be unfair.

Excerpt:
..Trump is inspiring tens of millions of Americans of all ages, races, religions and ideologies. He is inspiring them with novel ideas such as requiring that immigrants and visitors come into this country legally with proper documentation and making sure that we can properly vet everyone who wants to come to this country. He is inspiring them with novel ideas such as not rewarding corporations for taking jobs out of the country to parts of the world that have no minimum wage, environmental or child labor laws so that they can turn around and sell cheap goods to the Americans whose jobs they exported. He is inspiring them with novel ideas such as not expanding benefits to illegal immigrants while veterans — American heroes — are dying because we cannot treat them quickly enough.

If the Republican establishment does not like Trump’s ideas, it should try to beat him fair and square, by capturing the hearts and imaginations of the voters, as Trump has done over the past six months. If it can beat him fair and square, with a majority of votes and a majority of delegates, then the party — including those of us who support Trump — will come together behind the eventual nominee. But if the nomination is stolen from Trump through shadowy billionaire super-PAC money and “brokered convention” chicanery, I sadly predict that the party that I love and have helped to build for more than half a century will suffer a massive schism that may send it the way of the Whigs....

There is the very real possibility that Trump cannot be stopped from traveling further along the road to the nomination. From This essay, "The 25-Year Tide That Gave Us Trump,":
Trump’s popularity is a direct result of a tsunami of economic and cultural globalism that has flooded the shores of America over the last 25 years. The overwhelming pace of this change has upended both the country and the relationship that working-class voters have with both political parties, but especially the GOP....
Important factors according to that essay: economic globalism, cultural globalism (including concerns about Islamic terrorism), the Great Recession with the 2008 Wall Street bailout. In sum:
They [the middle class] want an outsider — someone strong enough to take on the system, someone who will not fix it or reform it but break it. Someone who will drop an anvil on the system’s head the way one was dropped on theirs [the heads of the middle class].

Of note: Marco Rubio, perceived as a GOP-establishment candidate, didn't pick up a single delegate yesterday.

Neoconservatism (the tenets of the establishment GOP and often referred to as "modern conservatism") is struggling to survive. Should it survive?  And does neoconservativism really protect American interests?

  1. I noticed this last night when I took a peek at FNC:

Trump wins Michigan and Mississippi and all they are doing (Megyn [Kelly] & Britt Hume)is running him down, listing his shortcomings, how he is only measuring this much or that much in favorability over this or that.

Brett Baer actually had to say let's not lose sight of the big story here, that he won these two big states.

I sighed -- and turned off the television.

Are both Kelley and Hume neocons?

It has been painfully obvious ever since Mr. Trump arrived on the scene that whoever directs the show at FOX News from behind the scenes has given strict orders to everyone but Sean Hannity to do everything possible to balk Mr. Trump's attempt to win the GOP nomination.

Canada Free Press, by Nelson Hultberg

I believe Donald Trump to be a man of character and honor, not the caricature that a desperate establishment is painting of him. Sure, I’m uncomfortable with the bombast. But despite this, I support his wrecking ball efforts to roust the D.C. grafters and mealy-mouths of the GOP and restore some truth to the American political landscape. Unfortunately few “talking heads” want to accept that, though Trump campaigns like a human blow torch, he is quite capable of changing his style. He was quite good. He gets into all kinds of “specifics” and is presidential. He talks as a unifier, not ...

Is Shaken and Donald Trump Roars Back

New York Times, by Alexander Burns

The story is getting familiar: Donald J. Trump won the biggest contests of the night, as Senator Ted Cruz of Texas captured the most conservative state up for grabs. Hillary Clinton kept a clear upper hand in the Democratic race, but Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont proved he would not be driven away anytime soon. Tuesday’s elections could have brought new clarity to the presidential primaries. Instead, they only seemed to confirm that both parties would probably settle their nominations by battling for delegates well into the spring. Nothing silences criticism like victory, and Mr. Trump racked up several on Tuesday. ...

    6. I will vote for whatever candidate the GOP puts up, because the thought of Her Heinous and her Consort in Corruption regaining the White House causes headaches, stomach cramps, chills, fever, nausea, insomnia and lava-like diarrhea.

Nevertheless, I have been thoroughly disgusted with the Republican campaign to win the nomination so far.

In all probability this will be the last presidential election in which I will ever participate. It saddens to realize that the mentality of the electorate has sunk so low that the BEST candidates have gotten little or no support.

Naturally, I hope that a miracle of some kind might yet save us from ourselves, but I have a creepy sickening sensation that, like or not, HILLARY will be our next president.

      Why is that?

Because the process has been rigged by The Oligarchs. The last thing The Oligarchs desire would be for the people who still care about our founding principles, our traditional culture and our identity as a fundamentally Christian people to have their voices heard in a legitimate electoral process. Therefore, to save wear and tear on my increasingly fragile self, I am more than willing to "lay it all in the Lap of the Lord" and reassure myself that come what may, HE knows what 's best for us in the long run.

  2. It would be unfair to block Trump at the Convention, were he to gain the majority of delegates. If Trump wins the nomination, it's the GOPs own fault. If Trump wins the nomination and loses to Clinton, it's the GOPs own fault. If Trump wins the White House, it's the GOPs own fault.

    5. CI... how would it be unfair to block Trump, if he only has a simple majority of delegates and not the required amount for the nomination?

The rules of the GOP are pretty clear in that if a candidate does not have the delegates to win on the first ballot, then the delegates are free to vote their conscience.

Trump knew this going in, and agreed to abide by those rules.

It may in fact blow up the convention and anger voters, but it is hardly unfair. Those are the rules they all agreed to.

    6. Dave,

That's what it comes down to. If Trump doesn't roll into the convention with the magic number, he's done. The Establishmentarians will reassert themselves, and it will all be within the rules.

What Trump does then, who knows?

The bigger factor is, what happens to those millions of voters Trump attracted?

Based on what I've read, they go back home and re-disengage from politics, status-quo ante reaffirmed, hello President Hillary.

  26. For all their hysterical worshiping of Ronnie Raygun, it's amazing how unlike him today's GOP has become. There's no way he'd want any part of them or that they'd want him. He'd be a RINO and drummed out of the party like so many others over the past several years as they went insane as a party. When they wax nostalgic for St. Raygun, I just laugh at how utterly absurd they've become.

    1. Blue Pitt Bull,
I see it a bit differently.

Reagan would neither like nor respect the neocons (RINOS).

The insanity you mention is neoconservatism, which seems to have begun with George H.W. Bush.

Reagan was not a globalist -- at least, he was not a globalist over American interests.

  27. So mostly leftist groups are trying to stop a Trump event tonight....fists are flying..cops involved..why can't protesteres THINK, act calmly, respond constructively? WHY doesn't the Left understand Free Speech and what can we do to remind them their college profs aren't god? That America used to be full of good thinkers who welcomed other thinking and could respond in kind, or unkind, but RESPOND.
It's all feelings and emotions for the left these days....so sad.

I'm hearing this morning that Bill Ayers and MoveOn.org might have been involved.

I was watching video footage of the riot this morning and saw some Bernie Sanders signs.

They stopped free speech, and they are thrilled.
Of course, free speech is also protesting, but INSIDE? I think not...I think to shut the event down inside is typical leftwing BS.
Picture Conservatives destroying an event for Bernie or Hillary? No, we let them speak, and we have good comebacks...not SHUT IT DOWN.

The news media are blaming Donald Trump for the rally.

And -- Get this! -- Ted Cruz said that Trump bears some responsibility for what happened in Chicago.

When a political candidate cannot campaign without violence breaking out, we have lost our country. Thus said my liberal American History college professor in 1972 when students in class were cheering after George Wallace was shot. And, as a staunch member of the Civil Rights Movement, that professor despised Wallace.

    3. "When a political candidate cannot campaign without violence breaking out, we have lost our country."

I couldn't agree more; imagine if anybody a leftwinger WINS? We could be on fire.

The protesters also stood in the way of ambulances, by the way.
And, another 'by the way', you know I can't stand Trump's bullying vindictive nastiness but he was right about "a lot of Muslims" ... I have to laugh when I hear leftwing media discussing how awful it was to suggest "All Muslims hate us" when he didn't say that at all...he said "A lot of them do".
      Is that not correct?
And, as you know, contrary to a lot of conservative opinions, I believe there are a LOT of muslims in America who do NOT hate us.
But to slam Trump for "A lot of them do"
Gad, here I am defending Trump...shoot me :-)

FJ...you're right...BLM really is the New Klan.

They're blaming Trump for coming to this part of Chicago and a "DIVERSE university"..
Wait...diverse? of THOUGHT? Like closing down a rally?

Or nobody's supposed to go to diverse-ethnic/color areas these days? Is that the message, CNN?

    6. .. you get a fear monger to whip his brownshirts into a lather by animating their hatred and then point the finger when the inevitable happens?

The incidents have been numerous and continuous at Trump rallies and he knows exactly what he's doing manipulating his Insane Clown Posse.

I have yet to hear conservatives called rapists at a Sanders rally. In fact, Sanders has gone out of his way to conduct a positive campaign. We are now parked at a spot where fruitful fascism is born.

    8. Ya, there's ol' Bernie (and I mean OLD) talking about how he has nothing to do with the Trump protests but there are BERNIE signs all over the place...
Trump is right; if Republicans were doing anything near what the lefties are doing to him, it'd be condemned all over the media. Does it make you feel good to see that we haven't a free media anymore?
Or that your lefty profs have created a whole freakin' generation of NON free thinkers who condemn anyone who hasn't their leftwing ideology?
      Congratulations.

Trump is a swine, I can't STAND him, and he's throwing red meat at audiences who are hungry for something other than leftwing crap; can you blame them?
If Obama hadn't been so terrible a president, destroying our debt, our int'l relations, our race relationships, who'd need a TRUMP?
Good luck wrapping your brain around a thought you haven't had.

    9. Beamish,
I look at it this way....

If someone crashes a party at your house, those party crashers might get thrashed.

A political rally is a sort of party.

    10. Z,
As I've said before, Trump sized up the political market, then started providing what the market was demanding.

It is to the GOP's shame that the situation ever got this far. There were warning signs all along the way, but the Party's managers chose to ignore those signs.

According to today's WaPo, it's been only the last two weeks that these interruptions at Trump's rallies have been occurring to the degree that these interruptions have disrupted the rallies.

How so? I don't get the connection and am interested in what you're thinking.

Yes, it's only been the last couple of weeks, if that, that leftists are crashing Trump's events.
It's a perfect way for them to come in, cause problems, leave, then blame Trump, as what the media is doing now.
The media rocks when it comes to slamming anything Conservative.
Let's never underestimate what's suddenly causing these disruptions....

AOW...he throws such red meat at the audiences and they go for it like Romans went for killing Christians at the Coliseum...BIG hurrahs and approval... amazing..humiliating.
Obama's created such a backlash to all he's done, one can hardly blame them, however. This is THEIR debt, THEIR loss of jobs, THEIR fears of terrorism...this is their country and they're grabbing anything that cures it of Obama and his cohorts.

    14. Z,
At the time that the pledge was initiated, nobody thought that Trump would ever get this far in gaining delegates. Therefore, the other candidates thought that they were "trapping" Trump.

Now the shoe is on the other foot.

he throws such red meat at the audiences

So did Reagan -- although Reagan's delivery was much different. A different time then, you know -- a more dignified time. We've lost that!

As far as all those BIG hurrahs go, the various debate moderators and/or producers have encouraged that kind of behavior from those attending the debates. I do wish that those audiences would be seen and not heard.
