Base Jumping

by Sam Huntington

This is an extreme sport where people jump off high cliffs with parachutes. One recent couple tried this, but only half of them reached the bottom safely. The parachute of the newly-wed female failed to deploy and she fell 2,000 feet to her death. Her husband jumped after she did, and ended up walking 10 miles to get help. I’m not sure what kind of help he needed at thiat point, other than help with processing his wife’s remains.

In any case, since base jumping is illegal in national parks, the husband has been cited by federal authorities.

Personally, libertarian leaning person that I am, I have no problem with people jumping to their death. Actually, I don’t even feel saddened by this story. If you are going to involve yourself in an extreme sport, then expect the worst to happen. Eventually, statistically, it will. This is why I am looking at this as the timely demise of someone who was just asking for it.

  1. Yeah, those people are just asking for it ...

  2. So, is that the "Fiscal Cliff" and does she symbolize the financial future of America?

  3. The only explanation for Base Jumping is … a RITALIN epidemic throughout America! Come to think of it, it’s the only explanation for leftism, too.

  4. The biggest issue is as soon as these extremists get in trouble they expect millions to be spent helping them out. I have no issue with extreme sports and activities. I raced motorcycles and flew aerobatics until five years ago because I figured at 62 my chance of a rapid recovery was slim. If they have to send in rescue you should be presented with a bill

  5. Not to be crass, but did that couple reproduce before base jumping?

Personally, I don't like any sport that involves heights. I guess I'm the type that prefers being anchored to the ground -- or at least the illusion of not being exposed to heights.

I'm not a fan of roller coasters, either!

  6. One can die in baseball or football. It happens...but this "incident" was plain foolhardy. Perhaps this fad will die off...just like the guy who died in a wing suit.

  7. Until I retired and hung up the uniform, I skydived......but I have a weird fear of heights. I can hang out of an aircraft by my fingertips all day long...but I don't like to be on my roof. Base jumping is for the birds.

  8. I'd like to know who packed her parachute. Colombo would ask. I'm just saying.
