An Outbreak Of Common Sense?

Could it be that Common Sense was prematurely buried?

From Anti-Sanctuary Push Spreads to Other California Cities: Orange County, Aliso Viejo, and Buena Park officials plan to push for similar action (dated March 21, 2018, emphases mine):
Orange County and several other cities in California could follow the lead of Los Alamitos and opt out of the state’s controversial law that restricts local cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Los Alamitos, the second smallest city in Orange County with a population of 11,500, late Monday rejected the state's so-called sanctuary law in a vote of 4-1 of the city council.

Officials with Orange County and the cities of Aliso Viejo and Buena Park reached out to Los Alamitos officials and began publicly expressing support and intentions to take up similar anti-sanctuary language.

"We are a little city in Orange County, but we're tired of things coming out of Sacramento that just don't make sense, and now others are telling us they feel the same way," said Warren Kusumoto, the Los Alamitos councilman who wrote the anti-sanctuary ordinance.

In an interview, Kusumoto said he introduced the language opting out of the new state law because he said state officials are "bullying" city leaders into picking sides between following federal or state law.

Choosing state law over federal law forces local officials to violate their oath of office to defend the U.S. Constitution
, he said.

"We want to declare that we are not a sanctuary city and we will defend and support the United States because we have taken an oath, and this is the same oath that folks in Sacramento have taken as well as the governor and the Senate," he said....

  1. DE-centralization of POWER should be the way to go, EXCEPT when our territorial integrity is threatened by attack from the air, or by invasion of foreign troops.

In times of war we should submit to MARTIAL LAW, and prepare urselves to obey the Commander-in-Chief without question or pause.

    1. FT,
The converse of the matter of de-centralization is that there can only be so many fractures before we cease being the United States of America.

Our Founders discovered this truth with the failure of the Articles of Confederation.

Constitutionally, immigration laws are the purview of the federal branch of government. Congress passes immigration laws, and those laws should be enforced. Therefore, in my view, sanctuary cities are in flagrant rebellion.

    3. AOW,

Doesn't persistent violation of our immigration laws quality "as an invasion by foreign troops" of sorts?

Of course it does in the moral-if-not-the literal sense.

By obssessively focusing on myriad specifics data after day, as if each was the only thing that mattered at a given time, we can't help but lose sight of the Big Picture, and can't, therefore, "see the forest for the trees," if anyone even knows what that means anymore.

If I said, "we can't see the mosaic for the tiles," would that help?

Or maybe the roses for the thorns?

What i continually try to do –– without apparent success, Alas! –– is to point to the ROOT CAUSES that show how organically connected the numerous things that bedevil us really are.

It is an attempt –– a poor one I guess –– to take a THREE-DIMENSIONAL view of issues raised.

"There are a thousand hacking at the branches of evil to one who is striking at the root."

"Men will lie on their backs, talking about the fall of man, and never make an effort to get up."

    4. By the way we love Centralized Power when it is used to enforce changes or strictures we LIKE, but feel like rebelling against it when the opposite occurs.

This, of course, works the same way for both the Left AND the Right. It's a ninpartusan issue, even though th,e Left has always pushed hard for bigger, stronger, tighter, meaner, more rigid, more suffocating Central Command and Control.

I suspect, if the Left were ever given its way sans opposition, it would do away with States Rights altogether, and supervise EVERY ASPECT of our LIVES through EDICTS from Washington, D.C.

Most here at AOW love the idea of encouraging the Federal Government to FORCE California and other wayward places that define themselves as SANCTUARY cities, counties states, areas, or regions to give free reign to ICE agents and allow them to FORCE local authorities to AID the Imigration control agents in enforcing FEDERAL DEPORATION STATUTES.

And yet, we Conservative-Libertarians are always railing against the growing menace of a Central Government grown too big, too strong, too expensive, too invasive, and too overbearing.

CAN we have it both ways?

      SHOULD we?

      Delete
    5. We should have it both ways IF illegals are criminals. Period. Full stop.

And it should be easy to "assist" ICE via the proper database. Instead, Leftistas insist that we harbor dangerous illegals criminals in our midst.

Aside from violent crimes, we also have the matter of identity theft and the illegal use of invalid Social Security numbers. Let an American citizen try those tactics, and watch the hammer of the law come down on then.

WE SHOULD NOT HAVE DIFFERENT RULES SO AS TO BENEFIT ILLEGAL ALIENS.

  5. YET ANOTHER THOUGHT:

Britain and continental Europe are feeling great pressure from signifocant numbers in the various nations involved to DISUNITE –– to BREAK AWAY from the European Union, and Britain not only voted for BREXIT, but SCOTLAND has made at least two serious attempts in recent years to SEPARATE from England and return to its original status as a distinct and separate culture with its own laws and folkways. I imagine there's a great deal of similar sentiment in IRELAND, since there has ALWAYS been bad blood between those two countries –– and nothing even faintly resembling UNITY.

In unity there may be STRENGTH, but apparently, there is little CONTENTMENT.

Nowhere is this desire to reclaim ancient, unique ethnic, religious and cultural identities, more in evidence than the USA. We used to claim proudly to be a MELTING POT. Today we would be better described as a SMELTING POT.

    2. Thank you for echoing something I originally observed back in 2009 at the now defunct Western Hero

America is now a smelting pot, where incompatible cultures separate under extreme heat, producing sulfurous odors, societal corrosives, slag and other useless byproducts.

Progressive elites of all parties are remaking America into a polyglot patchwork of mutually exclusive and antagonistic cultures, mixing in unassimilable immigrants with our already burgeoning hordes of home-grown criminals, gang members, serial impregnators, clown car coochie single mamas, and high school dropouts who care more about drug legalization and government freebees than what direction our nation is headed in.

  6. Another bit of information which has surfaced (emailed to me by one of my good friends, who used to be a blogger but got fed up with blogging)...

Beyond sanctuaries: Liberals call on police to stop arresting illegals to prevent deportations.

SO MUCH FOR PROTECTING AMERICAN CITIZENS AND THOSE HERE LAWFULLY!

  7. Why I am so enraged about the idea of sanctuary cities (yes, I've mentioned most of this in various other threads, on this blog and on other blogs)....

In my early 50's and without my having any pre-existing condition, including any previous spinal injury, one horrible morning, as I was driving to work (I owned my own business at the time), I sustained a permanently-disabling spinal injury resulting in Neurogenic Pain Syndrome (aka Neuropathic Pain Syndrome) because of an illegal alien under deportation order AND driving a Yellow Cab. This cab driver ran a 4-way stop sign and rear-ended me @ 35 MPH.

Before you say, "The cab company is responsible," think again. These cab drivers, most with few assets and little insurance, are not covered by the cab company's insurance.

I sued for the insurance amount that the cab driver had -- and his insurance policy was for only $100,000 coverage. He was supposed to be carrying a policy of $300,000 coverage.

How did I fare in court here in the D.C. area, large portions of which are de facto sanctuary cities?

Upon the pittance of a settlement (Think of a low amount, then think of a much lower amount), the officer of the court told me in words that will echo in my mind until I go to my grave:

"The sympathies of the court lie with the poor immigrant. If the situation were reversed, you'd be taken to the cleaners'.

    NO JUSTICE FOR ME!

The so-called settlement I received didn't begin to cover my out-of-pocket medical expenses. Those expenses -- and this tormenting pain -- still continue to this day. 24/7/365!

The pain I have suffered since May 2005 is much akin to the nerve pain caused by shingles.

COME LIVE MY LIFE, AND SEE HOW YOU LOVE SANCTUARY CITIES!

Sooner or later, something like what happened to me will happen to you or to -- God forbid! -- your child or significant other.

I urge any and all who read this comment to reconsider favoring sanctuary cities, support of which will be even worse that the situation with which I have to deal.

  8. Important essay by my dear friend Mustang, and it relates to the material in the body of this blog post:

    Memo for California Officials.

    Excerpt:

Bringing in and harboring certain aliens, 8 U.S. Code § 1324

Any person who knowing that a person is an alien, brings to or attempts to bring to the United States any manner whatsoever such person at a place other than a designated port of entry, or place other than as designated by the Commissioner, regardless of whether such alien has received official prior official authorization to come to, enter, or reside in the United States, and regardless of any future official action which may be taken with respect to such alien …

    [...]

… in which the offense was done for the purpose of commercial advantage or private financial gain, fined, imprisoned of not more than ten years, or both.

… during and in relation to which the person causes serious bodily injury to, or places in jeopardy the life of any person, be fined, imprisoned of not more than 20 years, or both.

… in resulting in the death of any person, be punished by death or imprisoned for any term of years, or for life, and fined, or both.

Perhaps it is time that the federal government charge state and/or local officials for these violations, particularly where there is sufficient evidence to show that enacted state and local policies or laws have resulted in death or serious injury of citizens of the United States. What is the point of having a law such as this if the Departments of Justice or Homeland Security do not intend to exercise it?

"We are now equipped to answer the question: Why does Trump—even more than other conservatives—make liberal brains go haywire? It is because he makes it impossible, in practice, for liberals to be tolerant (egalitarian), rational, and optimistic about human nature—three things that are essential aspects of liberal ideology and liberal psychology. Trump makes it preposterous, in other words, for liberals to be “liberal” in the usual sense.

      Delete
    3. Ducky,

First off, there are very few true "liberals" left. You can find them in everyday life, but there is nothing "liberal" about the noisy screamers on the left today.

Today's left is extreme, dictatorial, intolerant, strident, narrow-minded; in a word: illiberal.

The left has not been "tolerant (egalitarian), rational, and optimistic" for a very long time. Bill Clinton was the last person in the Democrat party who displayed those positive traits.

Now, you are a noisy plenary symposium of bitter, angry, hate-spewing radicals burning down everyone and everything that disagrees with you or stands in opposition to your twisted world-view.

The lies you people tell yourselves are stunning. It is a psychological study in mass self-delusion.
