Reparations

By Sam Huntington

The United Nations Working group of Experts on People of African Descent* have determined that the United States owes reparations to African Americans.  Why? Because, they say, compensation is necessary to combat the disadvantages caused by 245 years of legally allowing the sale of people based on the color of their skin and because the US has never confronted its legacy of “racial terrorism.”  I’m not sure, but this could be the reason why the United Nations has no credibility among thinking people.

The argument is that people who never owned slaves (everyone alive today) should pay reparations to people who never were slaves.  It is an irrational argument, and yet dozens of leftists are supporting it.

In fact, the proposition is about as illogical as a human being can get.  What about the Africans who took other Africans prisoners during tribal warfare and sold them to Europeans and Moslems?  Should they pay reparations, too?  What about white skinned people who were enslaved over the past 500 years? Should they also receive reparations, or is this just a black thing?

And what disadvantages are these people talking about?  Look, if black people want to get ahead in life, there are only three things they have to do to avoid being poor: (1) Finish high school; (2) Don’t have children before they are 20-years of age; and (3) get married before having children. Voila!  Problem solved.

As for the claim that the US has never confronted its legacy of “racial terrorism,” what in the hell do they think the Civil War was about?  I’d say the cost in blood more than paid the price for ridding our nation of slavery.  Ordinarily, I would shake my head and wonder how anyone could be this stupid, but then with a bit more thought, lifting a few layers, we’ll find other facts: no one on earth has been more cruel to blacks than other blacks.  The murder rate in Chicago bears this out.  Dig down a bit further, and we’ll discover the highly-successful leftist policy of racial discrimination toward blacks through the imposition of low-expectations.  Remove another layer and we’ll find that an overwhelming number of people who feed from the public trough reman there permanently.  This is the foundation of "black policy" in the Democratic Party.

Final questions: Kamala Harris is one of many Democrats who support reparations for blacks.  Her ancestors were slave traders.  Does Harris write a check, or receive one?  Barack Obama’s mother’s ancestors were slave owners and traders.  Does he write a check, or receive one?  Since no one is able to control who their ancestors were, how would reparations payments off-set the (manufactured) “trauma” of knowing that someone’s fourth great-grandparents were slaves?

*No one should have a title that won’t fit on a calling card.

  1. Well, it looks like you thoroughly covered all the bases. Nothing to argue with until Ducky comments.

    2. Sorry that I didn't take your white supremacist bait, Silverfiddle.

Reparations are going nowhere. You know it, I know it and Corey "Mr. Wall St." Booker knows it. Not that white America hasn't profited from black labor but that's not something we are going to admit. Easier to just whine, "but my family never owned slaves" and be done with it.

    3. That's interesting. "White Supremacist Bait" confected by a liberal at vox...

You showed up late and in a different thread, but your statement provides a living-breathing exhibit.

    4. "White America" (whatever that means) profited even more from immigrant labor.

Indeed, I've read historians saying the South's reliance on slave labor kept them economically stunted and prevented the industrialization that so benefited the north.

    5. Of course the industrialization started with the New England textile mills which processed southern cotton. It was initially a symbiotic relationship built by "king cotton". The south had to be dragged kicking and screaming out of their dreams of a plantation agriculture economy.
Doesn't change the fact that the American economy was built initially on cotton.

    6. ...after the UK's economy was built upon cotton. Blacks want reparations? They should sue the British.

About 75 percent of the cotton produced in the United States was eventually exported abroad. Exporting at such high volumes made the United States the undisputed world leader in cotton production. Between the years 1820 and 1860, approximately 80 percent of the global cotton supply was produced in the United States. Nearly all the exported cotton was shipped to Great Britain, fueling its burgeoning textile industry and making the powerful British Empire increasingly dependent on American cotton and southern slavery.

As for the "kicking and screaming part...." Under the leadership of Thomas Jefferson, the new state of Virginia in 1778 became the first state and one of the first jurisdictions anywhere to stop the importation of slaves for sale; it made it a crime for traders to bring in slaves from out of state or from overseas for sale; migrants from other states were allowed to bring their own slaves. The new law freed all slaves brought in illegally after its passage and imposed heavy fines on violators."

  2. Democrats are in a pander-spiral, corkscrewing downward, and they may not be able to pull out of it. They are playing with fire.

Reparations? Your reparations are being born in this nation, where with some work and dedication, you can make a success of yourself.

  3. I want reparations. My great-great grandfather was a slavebreaker and one of the area's best and he paid taxes on his legally operated small business. The federal government seized his property without due process or just compensation.

    1. I should get reparations because neither side of my family ever owned slaves. And Dad's side (Mennonite offshoots known as Dunkards, then the Church of the Brethren) was persecuted because they didn't own slaves.

Mom's side was too poor to own slaves. Hard scrabble Appalachia (East Tennessee).

    2. We've got Dunkards in our family tree, too. They came over from Germany to Pennsylvania in the 1700's and also ended up in the North Carolina Appalachians.

    1. ps - My G-Grandfather fought in the Union Army in the Civil War. He was discharged on a medical discharge a few days before his Regiment was decommissioned at the end of the Civil War. My family lost HIS services on the farm. Are blacks going to pay my family reparations for time spent/lost "freeing them"?

    10. Actually no. At least my grandpa wasn't. The only affiliation with the Klan he had was getting his business burned to the ground and his house shot at for registering blacks to vote in late 50's mid 1960's Alabama. Sorry Ducky.
