There is nothing magical about crossing the threshold from the old year into the new year. Nevertheless, acknowledging the crossing of that threshold has a long tradition of offering a new start, particularly a time of looking forward with hope.
We on the blogging team here at Always On Watch wish our readers a happy and healthy new year.
May 2019 be kind to us all!
_______ To a Glad New Year _______
ReplyDeleteToot the trumpets! Strike the strings and sing!
On your feet! Step lively in the dance!
Age and Youth alike are on the wing
Going forward: Time moves like a lance
Let loose by some celestial super strength
Amidst the muck and mire of our dozing
Driving us, reminding that life’s length
Never gives us room for much reposing.
Esurient? Appease the appetites
Wholesome and pure. The body, gross and vile,
Yields but sickly transient delights ~
Evoking ennui with a knowing smile.
Awake! A blessed New Year is at hand!
Resolve to love and give without demand!

________ On New Year’s Day ________
ReplyDeleteOur hope would be to take the roadblocks down
No more to have to hide behind the walls
Negativity built with a frown,
Even though she smiles in gleaming halls
Welcoming all with fawning falsity,
Yet yearning all the while for something solid.
Excitement dies in stuffy halls at tea,
As hypocrisy makes discourse witless, stolid.
Rarely may we speak without a filter.
‘Tis safer not, lest someone take offense.
So, fearing to be thought bizarre –– off kilter ––
Daft –– depraved –– or simply too intense ––
A fear of ostracism serves P-C,
Yielding a moribund society.

Wishing you a wonderful New Year with much peace.
ReplyDeleteThe same to you, Bunkerville, only I hope ALL of us may develop better COPING mechanisms this year and for the rest of our lives.
DeleteAnnoyance and Adversity are unavoidable, so it's HOW we CHOOSE to DEAL with THEM that makes all the difference. Half Full or Half Empty? –– and all that.
It may sound corny in this cynical, world-weary day and age, but I pray every day to develop a more POSITIVE approach to everything –– come what may.
At any rate i hope you have a lovely day today,a nd that 2019 will be very kind to you and everyone you hold dear.
___ To Lifelong Frends On Entering ___
ReplyDelete_________Their Tenth Decade _________
Nifty! There’s a piece of antique slang.
It well describes this most engaging couple.
Not too many remain quite so supple
Entering their nineties with a bang.
They’ve stayed involved, and managed with great skill
Year by year appearing calm –– serene ––
Yet eager to share insights ever green ––
Ever gently tough –– to resist ill.
An apparent lack of empathy once grated ––
Ruffled feathers always long for smoothing!
Self-control, however, is more soothing
Once easy sympathy proves overrated.
Longings to be whole are satisfied in
Denying rights to mar what we take pride in.

THESE DEAR PEOPLE HAVE BEEN MORE THAN FRIENDS. I FIRST MET THEM 70 YEARS AGO. THEY'VE ACTED ALL ALONG AS TEACHERS AND MENTORS. WITHOUT THEIR CONSTRUCTIVE INFLUENCE I CAN'T IMAGINE WHAT MIGHT HAVE BECOME OF ME. HE PASSED ON THE AGE OF 94. SHE IS STILL ALIVE AND WELL. WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO CELEBRATING HER 96th in FEBRUARY. THOUGH NEVER FAMOUS I SEE THEM AS THE EMBODIMENT OF WHAT IT MEANS TO ACHIEVE TRUE SUCCESS IN THE ART OF LIVING.

ReplyDeleteAs you proceed you need to heed
This ancient adage droll:
Keep your eye upon the doughnut
And not upon the hole!
