Christmas Caturday

(For politics, please scroll down)

Our alpha kitty Minxy is all ready for her second Christmas:

Don't anyone dare to try to budge Minxy from the recliner! And don't dare to put up many enticing Christmas decorations, either!

Amber, on the other hand, is a sweet, compliant kitty:

  1. _______ TO A CHRISTMAS CAT _______

What is the surprise that I see in your eyes,
    Aloof and mysterious for me,
Silver bright eyes that hold in their spell,
    Timeless enchantment I see.

The feathery snow cannot reach you within
Your diamond paned window so tight,
You sit snug secure midst your flower papered walls,
    Dreaming on this Christmas night.

The human ones balanced a Santa hat firm,
    Over your soft velvet ears,
Nothing can move you to stir from this place
As you contemplate wisdom of seers.

Holly, my precious, my bright little cat,
I see you in my special way,
Sweetheart, I love you, my holly bright girl
As we share this lblest Christmas day.

  2. __________ TO AMBER _________

Who could resist those eyes, pussycat?
    Trusting, demanding, eager, beseeching.
We do not know precisely why we find you irresistible.
After all, what do you really do to earn your daily portion?
Keep the mice at bay? Well, maybe, but that's not why
We love you. It's something about your aura of independence,
Even though we know how vulnerable you really are.

We'd hate to see your self-esteem damaged.
If anyone hurt or betrayed you, it would certainly damage us.
You just know you are important ––
And we can't help but respond accordingly.
And besides, you have about you an aura of mystery,
And enchantment that makes you uniquely beautiful.

We can never be sure whether you were put on earth for our benefit,
___ or the other way 'round,
    ______can we?

    1. Amber is the sweetest cat I’ve ever had.

She obeys! I’m not kidding. When I say no, she freezes.

She is also so patient with Minxy. Amber is much bigger and much stronger than Minxy. Amber disciplines her, but never really hurts her. And sometimes they romp together: the chase-me game.

  3. ____ To Minxy, Our Beloved Delinquent ____

She’s gray and white with a face like a fox ––
She chews the hamper, then grabs my socks ––
    Scampers off to God-knows-where ––
Under the bed or down the stair ––
Behind the sofa, curled in the chair ––
Coating the cushions with gray-white hair ––
Where she might be no one yet knows ––
Hiding herself in the basket of clothes?
    Lurking behind the washing machine?
Eager for mischief with the vitrine?
O how she’d love to paw each figurine ––
See it tumble from shelf to floor ––
Just looking –- not touching –– is such a bore.
Our household’s disturbed by this darling marauder
But we can’t correct her. We can only applaud her!

    1. Minxy has indeed a delinquent! After I’ve been on the phone for a while, she climbs up into the counters and starts opening cupboard doors.

She’s ever in search of pills. I have to guard the medication here so as to avoid a vet bill of $850. We already had the experience when she was 10 weeks old. She got into some of Mr. AOW’s pills. Off to vet intensive care she went for the night.

    3. Not to worry, AOW! As my eyes grow increasingly dim, and my coordination is deeriorating also, I've had to giveup trying to post a good clean copy.

If we called all the typos I've put into print in the last three years, they would probably fill enough pages to make a novelette –– at least.

I can't afford to let it worry ma anymore. If I did, I'd become paralyzed. and wouldn't be able to do anything.

    1. It's so good to get away from politics, and riots, and funerals I feel inspired to post something pleasant fo a change.

I often think if it weren't for our pussycat friends –– or dogs, –– if you're able to care for one properly ––, life could get very tedious in a hurry.

I've never seen it to fail that when I'm down in the dumps, either one or both of my kitties always manages to remind me that life is, indeed, worth living.

Sometimes –– even when they act up –– I honestly believe they are little angles sent to us from God to watch over us and keep our spirits from flagging. Often when I feel extra tired and don't really want to get out of bed, I think of the little furry ones, and realize that –– like it or not –– I HAVE to get up, so I can feed them. I could never let them down, as long as I have breath left in my body. The idea of neglecting them is frankly untenable.

      That's a GOOD thing, don't you think? };^)>

  6. _______ OLD DEUTERONOMY_______

    Old Deuteronomy's lived a long time;
He's a Cat who has lived many lives in succession.
He was famous in proverb and famous in rhyme
A long while before Queen Victoria's accession.
    Old Deuteronomy's buried nine wives
    And more--I am tempted to say, ninety-nine;
And his numerous progeny prospers and thrives
And the village is proud of him in his decline.
At the sight of that placid and bland physiognomy,
When he sits in the sun on the vicarage wall,
The Oldest Inhabitant croaks: "Well, of all . . .
    Things. . . Can it be . . . really! . . . No!. . . Yes!. . .
    Ho! hi!
    Oh, my eye!
My mind may be wandering, but I confess
I believe it is Old Deuteronomy!"

Old Deuteronomy sits in the street,
    He sits in the High Street on market day;
The bullocks may bellow, the sheep they may bleat,
But the dogs and the herdsmen will turn them away.
The cars and the lorries run over the kerb,
And the villagers put up a notice: ROAD CLOSED--
So that nothing untoward may chance to distrub
Deuteronomy's rest when he feels so disposed
Or when he's engaged in domestic economy:
And the Oldest Inhabitant croaks: "Well, of all . . .
    Things. . . Can it be . . . really! . . . No!. . . Yes!. . .
    Ho! hi!
    Oh, my eye!
My sight's unreliable, but I can guess
That the cause of the trouble is Old Deuteronomy!"

Old Deuteronomy lies on the floor
    Of the Fox and French Horn for his afternoon sleep;
And when the men say: "There's just time for one more,"
Then the landlady from her back parlour will peep
And say: "New then, out you go, by the back door,
For Old Deuteronomy mustn't be woken--

I'll have the police if there's any uproar"--
And out they all shuffle, without a word spoken.
The digestive repose of that feline's gastronomy
Must never be broken, whatever befall:
And the Oldest Inhabitant croaks: "Well, of all . . .
    Things. . . Can it be . . . really! . . . No!. . . Yes!. . .
    Ho! hi!
    Oh, my eye!
My legs may be tottery, I must go slow
And be careful of Old Deuteronomy!"

    1. Od Deuteronomy is my personal favorite of all the T.S. Eliot cat poems. I've loved it for at least forty years. I used o think largely comical, but as I get older and odder, I find it almost unbearably touching.

  7. __ The Christmas Kitten __

I once was a cuddly kitten,
But now I am a stray,
'Cause when I was no longer fluffy,
They sent me on my way.

    They've kept their big watchdog,
As he can bark and growl,
But I could fly at strangers,
If I caught them on the prowl.

    I slink around their garbage can;
    I mew outside their door;
But it's clear from their behaviour,
    They don't want me anymore.

    Now I'm cold and hungry,
    And getting very thin,
What have I done to hurt them,
Why won't they let me in?

I crouch in sheds and boxes,
    In my bedraggled fur,
    So shivery and dejected,
    I cannot even purr.

    They have another kitten,
    Their children's whole delight;
    But probably next Christmas,
It will share my wretched plight.

I have never seen 2 cats with the same personality.

  9. Oh, they do watch over us in some way, AOW. I have a member of my bible study whose husband had the cat. She merely fed it, but would have nothing to do with her. Her husband passed away in a nursing home, but right after that the cat knew, and she started to sleep in the small of her back, purring. She told me she had a friend whose husband died shortly after hers, but she did not have the gift my friend had -- that sweet presence to purr and comfort.
