The High Costs Of Sanctuary Cities

Click directly on the image to enlarge it:

Additional information and my personal story below the fold.

See Over 200 'sanctuary cities' in 32 states and D.C. (July 8, 2015).

There is more to the cost of illegal immigrants than the death of Kathryn Steinle.  And those stories are rarely covered by the media.

As one who suffered permanent, lifelong damage to my spine as the result of a car accident caused by an illegal immigrant under a deportation order dating back some 20 years, I know more about the disadvantages of a substantial illegal immigration population than I care to know!

Forty months after the accident (Yes, it took that long to bring my case to court!), the officer of the court uttered the following words just before ruling in my favor but for an amount that did not even begin to touch the medical bills which I had incurred since the accident : "The sympathies of the court lie with the poor immigrant.  If the situation were reversed, he'd be taking you to the cleaner's." Then he pronounced the insult of an settlement amount and glibly said: "Now you can go on vacation."

I shouted: "This was never about going on vacation! This was about a man who ran a stop sign, rear-ended me, lied to the police officer at the scene, and didn't appear in court when summoned. He broke the law! I didn't! But I am the one being punished. This is not justice!"

I then stalked out of the room.

Even ten years later, I continue to get expensive medical treatment for my spinal injury.  Furthermore, I cannot, since the accident, work the same amount of hours.  Thus, I continue to incur medical bills, hire out housework which I can no longer do, and cope with a reduced income.

Sanctuary cities come at a very high cost — a cost which too goes unnoticed. Until those who haven't noticed are directly affected themselves.

  1. How about the cost of the Medicaid mills of dentistry in Dallas County? I find it interesting to see what appear to be poor immigrants flashing their braces. We could not afford the same for our children.

Laws should be fairly adjudicated regardless of income and they should be citizen-friendly. Our laws are not citizen-friendly when it comes to benefits.

    1. Anonymous,
Illegal immigrants can get many free services for which citizens must pay. Of course, these services are not actually free. Citizens are paying for them.

    2. An illegal alien possible ex-husband who was one of the Reagan Amnesty Dreamers found divorce papers I was working on. I had just found out that when he took off (wiping me and my disabled Vet father our finacially to under a dollar and abandoning his three kids) while he was in CT and NY living with his family (one of the reasons we left the state and moved away I didn't want my kids to grow up in an area with that family a large number Latin Kings when we got together they were kids but grew up to be one of the most violent gangs in US history) so I get my bank accounts and assets frozen turns out when he was in CT and NY (and I was dumb enough to let him come back again) he committed Immigration Fraud in person in the Harford Immigration office. (turns out his green card and social security number revoked years prior and he knew it enough to lie on federal forms and interview attorneys) I at the time knew that my accounts and pay was frozen by the IRS (turned out his cousin that owns and runs several business in CT, NY and the Dominican Republic services like taxes, setting up unemployment fraud, tax fraud, welfare fraud, acts as attorney for immigration fraud, and while waiting for real green card and social provides fake license, green card, social security card and passports so good not even a cop or customs can tell the difference. I at the time only knew of the tax fraud part and not exactly what he did I knew he filed a version different than what I was shown turned out very different he was claiming head of household and put down that I abanonded my kids in 2009. Which got him $7k in earned income credit refund and the only income reported was his unemployment fraud in Texas where he lied and claimed to be a US citizen to commit 11k in unempoyment fraud also using a social security number that the social security office and everify had told him was not to be used it was revoked.

    3. Part 2 BTW is NH a sanctuary place?? I found out more and more over the course of the past two years after he kidnapped my children out of their classrooms and took off have been seen in NH, ME, CT, NY, FL. The state of Texas issued an injunction and restraining order to give me the kids back immediately and show up at a hearing in ten days and I flew to NH to execute it. Under Federal Law it has to be honored in all 50 states in good faith and none of us had ever been a resident of NH. I at the time was on short term disability and just released from the hospital and going back in for a week after the kids were all settled in the New School year. I have epilepsy only a couple gran mals in my life but the recent hospital stay showed that the look people were describing I would get on my face like zoned out for a minute and having headaches and nausea was a form of partial seizures. We now know the reason why is that we had been in Florida for a year before going home to Texas after I launched a major government investigation into the bank I worked at in the credit card collections and litigation division and debt sales. It is the one in all the headlines the past few weeks. We had thought it best for the kids not to be in Texas during the government investigation I knew what they were going to find and had done the testifying and that bank is a major employer with a lot of friends, neighbors and classmates have parents or friends working there. Silly me see back in 2009 I never got the memo that bankers especially executive level our jobs were now to intentionally commit fraud that you would be promoted, praised and get bonuses for. Me I didn't sign off on a quarter of a billion dollar debt sale that was all fraud and got fired for it. You know the whole "robosign" "robocall" affidavits to commit fraud upon the court and industry wide hundreds of billions of dollars in illegally obtained judgments abusing the courts to bypass all state and federal consumer protection laws. Myself and most at that time thought that on site government audotors camping out would result in arrests (I had seen bankers arrested in previous jobs for tiny amounts compared to this so made sense) so decided to go stay with my dad in Florida until over at the time thinking a couple of months not a year. It was tough on teenagers leaving their friends, getting half the story, constant media (they thought it was fun at first especially 60 minutes turning the house into a studio and letting them help) but all the reporters and lawyers got old after a while. But at least dads was a two bock walk from the beach and he bought us all annual passes to Universal Studios and Disney World. My kids loved Harry Potter had seen all the movies and it was the new part of Universal Studios then. With annual passes we were going nearly every weekend we only lived about 45 minutes away. And every time I was fine until half way through the park turns out where the Harry Potter ride is that we always went on and the tens of thousands of strobe lights in the ride was triggering partial seizures. Shortly after I could be confused, out of it, and not feeling well.

    4. Didn't know the reason until the neuro team back home in San Antonio figured it out right away. So after the Texas police got the full story and talked to witnesses they were on their way to where he was to get the kids the middle school and high school also dispatched their own police. They got there too late he had gone to the airport and on a flight. Landed in New Hampshire and from there a NH cop took over helping him. You see there is a loophole in federal and immigration law you can't be prosecuted or deported if you are a battered spouse fleeing with your kids for your lives. And to make matters worse he used the methodology on the courts that I jsut explained to the world bogus affidavits instead of facts or evidence. He was served with everything but the cop helped him write up all kinds of affidavits in front of me, falsify court documents, perjury, non attorney practice of law, lied and said he contacted Texas police and no reports there were three. Lied on the Federal UCCJEA form as to where me, my ex and the kids lived for the past five years. Especially the part that he wasn't even living with us had moved to Connecticut went and got a new greencard at the CT Immigration and a new Drivers license in person at the Connecticut DMV and was working of course under the table at a popular restaurant. The cop got him an exparte hearing with the judge I was there with real court orders from the court with jurisdiction but was illegally blocked from speaking with the judge or filing any evidence. He and the cop told the judge that I was "mentally unstable because I had epilepsy" the last words I heard from my youngest daughter was "my mommy fakes seizures to call ambulances and get drugs". I was taken to the hospital in an ambulance just before leaving Florida my father ordered one called he saw something weird again with my eyes and me looking confused and out of it and anyone that knows me knows that is not normal for me. But my youngest daughter was several hours away at a sleep away church camp when the ambulance was called and my four day hospital stay. They kept me when the EEG showed yes I am wide awake and talking but having non stop seizures (called partial seizures, waking or carious other names) I saw two neurologists and was moving back to Texas in a couple of weeks and already set up for follow up back with the families long time doctors in Texas. All of my constitutional rights were violated, civil rights, ADA, UCCJEA, Federal Law, State Law etc. I was blocked from even speaking to the judge or attending the hearing. That cop lied to the court along with my ex and when he came out of the courtroom laughed and said "the only court that counts is mine" now this is North Conway NH on top of what I call ice mountain and hours from even the nearest airport. The cop put my ex and the kids in his car and drove off right after my ex had been served in front of me with the injunction and restraining order with an order for the kids to come home with me good in all states. Because now he was a battered spouse and protected under VAWA.

    5. The judge told me to go get all of the school and medical records. Two of my kids have serious medical conditions that require treatment. I also got sworn statements from every employer, neighbor, teachers, coaches, friends, principals, kids doctors, mine and my exs doctors. I took voluntarily just to prove a point two years of regular drug tests all clean. Then I got served in my attorneys office in Texas this NH judge issued a restraining order telling me I was not to see, contact in anyway in person, phone email nothing with my kids for a year not so much as send a present. I had still never gotten to speak or file evidence and there is not one witness in NH we never lived there. There was a hearing in NH two weeks prior which I called the court before the hearing and had a continuance prepared (my attorney was in TX and not licensed in NH same with my ex's attorney) I asked the clerk for the Fax Number or Email. It was the Monday after hurricane Sandy and every airport on the East Coast was closed I couldn't get there. She giggled (buddies with the same cop and to understand the remoteness moose population higher than human, and the courtroom and mini police station in the same parking lot smaller than most road side rests.

    6. She asked me to hold said she was going to tell the judge and came back on and said to overnight it. I said OK but again asked why no fax machine or email and she laughed. I sent it overnight and also before the hearing ever started in NH I faxed a copy to my ex's only attorney of record here in TX and to my attorney. I was waiting for the new hearing date going crazy with all of this and trying to keep up with the government cases I was under subpeona for with the banks and regulators. Then that day in my attorneys office I got served with that. I left the office my dad was with me and was walking into a store still in shock and had a massive gran mal seizure in the parking lot hitting my head really hard on a curb. I woke up in the hospital only the second time in my life I saw my father cry the first was when his brother died he really thought he lost me. He is the once a Marine always a Marine. It took a couple of months to recover there was some nerve damage I lost use of my right hand and arm for a while. Both courts were informed. I lost my job because it was more than 50% travel and now I couldn't drive for six months. My ex cancelled my medical and life insurance and sold everything we ever owned that was in storage waiting to move into the new place. I don't even have a photo album of my kids as babies nothing. Everything of my moms special things she gave me and she had just passed away six months before. As soon as I was able and the epilepsy meds leveled out (first couple weeks when they change medications like that you can be off very normal) I contacted the child services in Texas and in NH and they were shocked at what they were hearing and sent me the final copies of their reports after interviewing me, the kids, long time teachers, neighbors everything official report unfounded false allegations from both states. So I headed to NH again I had to testify in DC that week and decided to go from there. It was a week before Christmas and my son and daughter had just had birthdays. There was still no communication and isn't now. Only certain things were put on FB for me to see like right after he was served the restraining order and ordered to turn in any weapons and not allowed near any photos and videos of him and my son with rifles, pistols and machine guns and slogans "a restraining order is just a piece of paper".

    7. While testifying in DC on my way there I got an instagram from my daughter on my phone it was her in the back of an ambulance with all kinds of things hooked up to her and in the hospital. I finally broke down crying and scared. The IT team at the government attorneys office got the pics off my instagram and emailed to my attorney and responded back asking what happened and where to send medical records. Never replied to. Now I had hired an attorney in NH called everyone along with my Texas attorney in any area of civilization but none would take any cases up on that mountain for any reason too far and it is well known as a kangaroo court. I got there late at night my dad drove and a long time friend that has known me and my ex since teenagers came with us. In the morning I called my attorney I was armed with boxes of sworn testimony, medical records, school records everything from our whole lives. My attorney in NH called back a couple minutes later and said the police just called him and said there was a warrant for my arrest and said go over the state line to Maine until figured it out. Went a couple miles down the road to Maine didn't hear anything for hours called him and he said he would need another $7000 to reporesent me. I had lost my job over this, already over 20k in legal fees and travel and didn't have it. How could this even happen they no longer could use the loophole under VAWA when two states investigated and issued formal statements unfounded false allegations. I had no choice but to go home out of money. I kept trying to go back to work but all the stress they couldn't get my epilepsy under control even with the meds and no matter what I was still testifying under subpeona. Apparently my kids were told I never showed up for them and didn't want them only obsessed with this case with the banks. My case was settled in 2011 this was state and federal cases that I was under subpeona for not just a fun game and the outcome could and did impact millions of people. Five years of testifying and every word checked out in all of the investigations which is why as of last week credit card and debt collections, lawsuits and debt sales are reformed in this country for good with just the one item over half a million americans being refunded what they were defrauded.

    8. Then the story to the NH court was that the Texas divorce and injunction were falsified and he was never served with any real documents. Well the sheriff that served him in the court provided a receipt of service for the Texas court and he obviously got them and understood them enough to hire a Texas attorney to calll in sick for him. And then to file a motion to dismiss based on a major criminal investigation going on by the NH police into me. I never lived in NH and it was being led by the cop that is still racking up felonies with falsified and perjured items to courts. Then I didn't hear anything for months no mail, phone updates nothing. I would see online vine videos in NYC and in CT and photos but who knew when they were taken even a day off and I would miss them and by now I am living with my dad who is supporting me with his social security and VA service connected disability. And now we find out that my ex is in Florida filing more bogus police reports and sending cops to a friends house I was at while my dad was having knee replacement now with a whole new set of stories including I sent four year olds out into heavy traffic and am a lifelong street drug user that has never been able to hold a job. Mine and my kids life stories and my job history is documented very well in the media major reputable media. But I guess that these reporters, schools, doctors, everyone nationwide is lying, hey even bogus blood work, MRI's, my son extensive medical records he was three months premature. Nero surgeons in two states are lying so now they are actually literally saying brain surgeons are lying but the illegal alien that has committed every felony in the book and another reason I was leaving him had a thing for fooling around with high school girls while I was at work. He has rights and is protected, my kids went from top schools in the country that are duel credit to I can only go on rumors and what hits google alerts two graduated from a ged type program for at risk youth and working multiple jobs each. My kids never in trouble in their lives now drug arrest and indicted for burglary but no one will give me any answers this place up on that mountain has their own laws and rules. The school issue found out he never transferred a set of their records from Florida and one of my kids called the priciple in Florida and asked not to jsut delete the class she only had a couple more hours online for the credits. Recently finding out more like the mail. I finally received a letter from the NH Attorney General Child Support Office in a plain envelope with a sticker with my current address. Inside was a hearing notice from nearly a year prior with my name and a NH PO Box. Called that post office and asked if they had a PO Box in my name and gave the number of the box and asked if anything was in it. The girl was gone a long time and came back and said I would need to come in and show ID to get my mail if I didn't have my key. I explained again that I do not have a PO Box there but apprently someone opened one in my name and has mail going there and again she said to come in with ID in person and again I explained over 1000 miles away.

      Delete
    9. I asked who opened the PO Box since you need to show ID and proof of address to open one. I had the USPS website up now. And she hung up on me. I called the NH Child Support Number on the paper and got a woman and explained to her and wouldn't you know turned out to be the same court clerk they broke every law in the book already and buddies with that cop. Took several more months but I have made some investigative friends along the way and I found out who the PO Box is registered to and my mail re-directed there and my address was falsified on NH court documents I have never received but the one nearly a year later. What a shocker the same NH cop. Funny when I tracked them to Florida and was in the Florida FBI office running a day behind as usual the geniuses took a photo of the cop, my ex, and their friend with thumbs up and beers. The friend can't make this stuff up postal worker in that post office. So now based on the list of felonies is getting very long and all knowingly and intentionally and not covered under the color of law fraud upon the court two states, parental kidnapping, lying to immigration, immigration fraud , should read that loophole better that illegal alien get out of jail free card for battered spouses fleeing I am sure he has other scams going too, stapling the paper to a motion didn't mean you went and filed it with INS who due to the abuse with VAWA fraud investigates and wants medical records and talks to neighbors, teachers, etc. and not eligible if you are fleeing from a felony. So now my kids from what I hear and see on FB have been drinking the fantasy koolaid so much they believe a lot of his lies and think he was protecting them not letting them know. Plus they are smart enough to know and understand more about litigation and everything they know if they tell the truth now they lose their dad forever and a lot of other people get in trouble they are probably concerned they will get in trouble themselves. I didn't initially press charges in Texas for the things done to me I just wanted a divorce and the parental kidnapping Texas Penal code 20 isn't a felony unless he never returns with the kids I think two and a half years count.

    10. Take the time to google my name Linda Almonte and read a little it isn't possible to make this stuff up. But also think if this can happen to me and my children and I am the one with ansolutely no rights at all because he is an illegal alien. I specialize in litigation and have taken on Wall Street and DC along with 47 AG's and won and not a I promise to be better in the future I have been riding them for five years and catch everytime they are back to business as usual. You will see especially with our military and veterans and defrauding them. They aren't just getting fines all the people are getting the cases vacated, wiped off all three credit bureaus, refunded all money plus 25% back to the people and that is going to be the perm reform industry wide. Now imagine the person capable of doing all of that just because someone is illegal is capable of this sort of abuse to me, kids, courts etc and no one will help or say a word. They know the evidence is real and all true but he is Dominican and Illegal and that is all that counts now. If the situation were reversed he would have all kinds of state and federal agencies helping him. But I am white American so I am not eligible for any help. Drive or not any constitutional attorney or civil rights attorneys seems like would jump on this especially in New Hampshire. If I can get there and a place to stay preferably a lawyer but could do pro-se I will put these issues with illegal aliens and this is a perfect example he hasn't had one chance but several chances each time means less to him. And the items I will be filing and make sure is public of his family members I wanted to keep my kids from some are on most wanted lists for sexual crimes against kids, apparently it was a "distant" cousin like they call everyone in that family in NJ they caught with the bomb making stuff converted to muslim along with a lot of the other "cousins". I didn't really pay attention to the changes going on in his family for a long time or the converting religions I mean Spanish are usually devote catholic. Two of his uncles got nailed at JFK for trying to smuggle weapons through. All those bodegas his family owns in NYC also have something called "Financeras: I don't know exactly what it is my Spanish is so so but it is like their own bank you can invest and get high interest rates, you can borrow at high rates but never be late ends up in the newspaper, and a lot of movement of money between a lot of countries. They even have mortgages with this it is more sofisticated that people would think. This organizaed group run by his cousins that actually have offices in multiple states and countries that do the taxes, immigration, identifications etc. I don't know who is all incolved or how it all works but I could get someone to a couple of key people. When I met my ex husband or husband or I don't know anymore I have heard from third hand information from kids that he told another set of lies and got some default divorce don't know where not showing up in any computer system but NH courts nothing is online and recents pics again in Florida and NY.

    11. Then there is the family auto business they buy cheap used Hondas and Civics in the US because they are worth more in Mexico and pay people with legal papers they know in CT and NY to drive the cars to locatioins in Mexico like 5 or 10k for a week trip and give them an airline ticket back because they claim the cars are worth that much there. Sure they are I have no idea what they are doing there. But that is just it when we met I didn't know any of this stuff he was jsut a guy I worked with at a Diner by my college and most of the dangerous players were little kids. Over time that family terrorized me and threatened me in every way possible I left the NorthEast to never return once I had kids after the kids was when I started learning the stuff and the younger cousins got older. I am scared what my ex is involved in with them up there now and my kids are there just looking at the pics and the several vacations a year he isn't doing that working part time at a hotel desk like he claims. I live in fear of where my kids are and what they are being told he will get them into. If his aunts get a hold of those girls they will have them in the Domincan Republic marrying them off for the highest price because they are American. They did it to some of his younger sisters friends. If anyone knows anyone that will listen or can help me please contact me. And googling my name there is a gofundme account. If what you read in all of the media if you are a victim of the bank fraud let me know FB me if I can do something I will. But this can be a win win for me and my kids and putting a lot of issues with real examples right there in the middle of NH with a person capable of having a lot of media coverage of it. I fear every day I will be too late. This is home grown terrorism and if it can happen to me it can happen to anyone.

  2. "Sanctuary cities" are illegal. Period. The states [much less municipalities] do not have enumerated power to control or enforce the border security of this nation. Thus, illegal aliens are federal fugitives. Local governments who wittingly harbor [broadcast it even] federal fugitives....are themselves in violation of the law.

If the political elite are not required to abide by statue law......why are we?

    1. Statue Law referenced above:

      Title 8, U.S.C. 1324(a)

Harboring -- Subsection 1324(a)(1)(A)(iii) makes it an offense for any person who -- knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that an alien has come to, entered, or remains in the United States in violation of law, conceals harbors, or shields from detection, or attempts to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection, such alien in any place, including any building or any means of transportation.

Encouraging/Inducing -- Subsection 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv) makes it an offense for any person who -- encourages or induces an alien to come to, enter, or reside in the United States, knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such coming to, entry, or residence is or will be in violation of law.

    2. CI,
      By means of transportation, huh?

Well, a lot of cabbies -- and I'm not referring to the gypsy cabs, either -- don't care about immigration status. Furthermore, the cab company is not liable for damage or injuries because the cabs are titled to the individual cab drivers.

    4. One reason that Donald Trump is so popular right now is this immigration mess. It is NOT "extremist" to want to put an end to sanctuary cities.

I rather imagine that most people who are supporting Trump have had something similar to my situation happen to them or to someone they love.

A lot of people have friends or family whose automobiles were destroyed by illegal immigrants running the roads. Often, those destroyed automobiles are covered by liability-only policies.

Illegal and under-insured (or uninsured) cab drivers should be of concern to anyone who uses a taxicab -- even if only on rare occasion.

I'm guessing when people really, really get tired of illegal immigrants, these illegal immigrants will steal more chain than they can swim with.

  3. Donald Trump has my respect because he is not engaged in sophistry. I tire of the remainder of the candidates. Hillary stating "You should and you can trust me on CNN" had me reaching for the brandy - three fingers, not two.

The cost of illegal immigration is born on the backs of taxpayers. The rewards of illegal immigration and a low cost labour pool provide a "benefit" too for a select group. The cost-benefit paradigm is skewed. The cost is borne by people like me. The benefit of remuneration into an income stream of my own is never realized.

On a side note, my church got away from asking members to provide backpacks full of school supplies for "the poor". The poor white families in our community never showed up. They had a sense of responsibility to provide for their own children. What a novel idea! But the "usual suspects" show up for anything and everything that is offered as a gift. I do believe in hand-to-hand charity. But I do not believe the government should stick their hand into MY POCKET and hand my money to an illegal immigrant. I do not advocate subsidy for crime. Illegal immigrants have broken the law.

She and her husband could be delivering such an uplifting message to people of color: "Look at us, two middle class minorities who started with nothing..."

This is about stirring up anger and channeling it into political dominance.

There is hope. Too many minorities are firmly and happily embedded in mainstream society, and they ain't buying the Angela Davis, Che Guevara crap. They have good jobs, own homes, successful children.

It's easy to stir up the inner city people. I'd be a pissed off liberal Democrat voter to if I were stuck there.

Michelle and Barack have those people in their back pocket. Now, they need to convince the middle and upper class minorities that the improvement they have seen is all a fiction. A cracker behind every hiring decision, and peckerwood behind every tree...

Racial harmony is the last thing the grotesque leftwing progs want.

Doen't mean that questions in this case shouldn't be answered:

Sanctuary city acts are supposed to encourage illegals to report crime without fear of deportation. Towns then turn the perp over to some branch of law enforcement.
    What happened here?

    1. Ducky has a point about the original purpose of "sanctuary city." I have no problem with a simple rule that states police will not make immigration status inquiries on anyone reporting a crime, but it has gone way beyond that.

The worse part of this is we have governments at all levels choosing which laws they like or don't like, and practicing selective enforcement.

      From the concluding paragraph:

This is about immigration, yes, but in some ways it’s also about the lawlessness that’s become the most powerful tool in left-wing governance. If this kind of nullification and arbitrary enforcement of law becomes acceptable—as it has with the Supreme Court, for instance—what happens when conservatives begin doing the same?

As I explained in my blog post, the illegal immigrant had more equality before the law than I did. Orwellian! "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." Ugh.

This is not the first time white people have been killed in San Francisco by illegal immigrants. 12. To Ms Always On Watch:

I am sorry you have had to suffer from that sad accident, but please tell me if you would be suffering any less if the driver who hit you had been a regular American citizen and not an illegal immigrant?

If you think a big cash award would have spared you the pain from the injury, I doubt it very much. It's like worrying about whether those nine murders in Charleston should be called a "hate crime" or not.

Who cares? What difference des it make? When you're dead, you're dead. Why your murderer killed you isn't important. No matter what his legal status or what was in his mind at the time you are still just as dead any way you slice it.

It's the same with a car accident. The immigrant status of the driver has little to do with how and why you got hit. Regular citizens can stupid, irresponsible, get drunk, commit crimes as much or more than illegal immigrants.

Your situation is unjust, but it's just the luck of the draw. The same thing could have happened if there were no illegal immigrants here at all. On average natural born Americans are no better than anyone else.

    1. Sanity Runnamock,
I'm glad that you have asked these questions!

You said: please tell me if you would be suffering any less if the driver who hit you had been a regular American citizen and not an illegal immigrant?

Physically? Maybe, maybe not. You see, there are indeed some recommended medical treatments that might well address the dysfunction of my sacroiliac joint. These medical treatments are in the range of $10,000 each and approved by the Mayo Clinic. They are not, however, covered by Bluecross Blueshield, my insurance carrier. Had the violator of the laws not been in the automatic favor of the court, his insurance policy, albeit not a huge one, would have paid for those treatments. Furthermore, had the violator of the laws not been in the automatic favor of the court, his insurance would also have helped to cover my lost wages. I lost wages during the period when I was at the top of my earnings capacity.

Therefore, I do maintain that the immigrant status of the driver mattered in my case.

BTW, it is clear that the law did find the driver who hit me as being at fault. The damage to my vehicle was paid ASAP, thus indicating that the cab driver was negligent.

Also, please recall the very words spoke to me in court by the officer of the court:

"The sympathies of the court lie with the poor immigrant. If the situation were reversed, he'd be taking you to the cleaner's."

Accidents happen. Yes, indeed. But the person who causes any given accident should be held responsible. PERIOD!

      Delete
    2. Sanity Runnamock,
The immigrant status of the driver has little to do with how and why you got hit.

True in some respects. However, had the illegal immigrant been deported, he wouldn't have been here to hit me in the first place. Simplistic, I know, but there you have it.

    3. I disagree. Talk to Victor Davis Hanson. The notion that illegal drivers cause few problems is a fantasy. YOU are not alone, dear lady.

He writes about the increasingly common occurence of [usually drunk] drivers with no license, ID, insurance or vehicle documentation who drive off the road, plough through his farm, ripping out vineyards and such.

"One can drive on country roads, and every so often see whole swaths of young vines or vine runners replanted in the roadside rows of an otherwise mature vineyard, with dozens of new stakes and wire to mark the accident site." Trust me, the guy who caused the accident didn't pay for any of that either.

He, too, was broadsided by an illegal alien driver without insurance who fled on foot. Hanson caught him. But "the arriving officer told me that he had charged him only with running the stop sign (not a hit and run) and would release him. I had to pay the deductible for the damage to my truck by the uninsured driver, and my insurance company later quietly informed me that the local police had filed no report of the accident."

  13. From the Washington Post: Obama’s silence on Kathryn Steinle killing is deafening:

...It got little notice, but on May 28, Sarah Saldana, director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, admitted in a letter to Sens. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) that between fiscal years 2010 and 2014, the Obama administration had released “121 unique criminal aliens who had an active [deportation] case at the time of release and were subsequently charged with homicide-related offenses.”

Think about that: 121 times over the past four years, the administration has released an illegal immigrant with prior criminal convictions who went on to be charged with murder. That is one every 12 days.

In one case, an illegal immigrant and felon named Apolinar Altamirano allegedly gunned down a 21-year-old Arizona convenience store clerk, Grant Ronnebeck, over a pack of cigarettes. Altamirano had been convicted of felony burglary and was in the middle of deportation proceedings. But ICE released him after he posted a $10,000 bond — which allowed him to allegedly go kill an innocent young man....

    [...]

In 2013, the Obama administration released 36,007 illegal immigrants with criminal convictions — 1,000 of whom were subsequently convicted of other crimes after their release. Last year they released 30,558 such immigrants....

    More at the above link.

What the story omits is cases such as mine. I have to wonder how many others have situations such as I explained in the body of the blog post.

  14. Baysider's comment reminded me about one more detail of my car accident....

The illegal immigrant who hit me at that stop sign did not report the accident for two weeks.

When I notified the police about that particular violation of the law, the police shrugged it off and at first claimed that they could find no record of the accident!

Fortunately, I had a copy of the accident report written at the scene. I made a copy of that report and sent it to the cabbie's insurance carrier.

  16. To Add to the Discussion Above About the Relevance of the Legal or Illegal Immigrant Status of Drivers:

First let me say I am not unsympathetic to Ms Always On Watch at all. I wish it had never happened, and I'm sorry for all the trouble she's had to go through.

However, can't you see that blaming the legal status of that irresponsible driver is just like saying ALL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARE BAD DRIVERS and a MENACE to ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS?

It strikes me as being in a class with statements like the following.

If there were no knoves, nobody would ever get stabbed.

If there were no railroads, nobody would ever have gotten killed when a train got wrecked on a collapsing bridge.

If there were no bridges none of them would ever have collapsed.

Same thing with planes, buses, cars, even life itself to say nothing of fire, water, chemicals, drugs, and food all of which can kill under certain circumstances.

If you'd never been born, you would never have suffered any pain of any kind at all.

To live is to risk. Bad stuff happens no matter what we do to try to prevent it. To hope for justice in this world is in my way of thinking is unrealistic.

And Baysider, I know you live in California, right? The problem is much worse there than most other places, because that state, because the state's extreme liberalism has made itself a magnet for the worst elements among the most undesirable people everywhere. California has been begging to have its American identity annihilated for decades.

But Ms Always On Watch might be more accurate if she blamed the liberals for her problem instead of the driver of that cab. If it weren't for liberalism, we wouldn't have this or many other problems.

I never said ALL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARE BAD DRIVERS and a MENACE to ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS. The analogies you listed are false analogies.

In fact, the driver who ruined my back had never had a previous driving violation. Furthermore, he lied time at the accident scene, did not report the accident to his insurance carrier, dropped the mandated coverage so as to get lower coverage, and did not appear in court.

In addition, the fault of the accident was the cab driver's and his alone. I was, in effect, ambushed from behind -- defenseless, in other words.

I do clearly blame the political weasels. Did I not related verbatim the words of the officer of the court? Yes, I did. The cab driver who ruined my back had adequate insurance coverage for my very small civil suit (by civil suit standards, that is), but the sympathies of the court did not allow for me to be awarded the small sum I requested.

My post is accurate -- not inaccurate -- and I stand by every word.

To hope for justice in this world is in my way of thinking is unrealistic. That may be so. But to be dealt with by the court in the manner that happened and handed injustice in such a clear-cut case instead is an outrage. Living with 24/7 page ain't no picnic, so, yes, I'm angry.

I don't think this is true for one minute: "ALL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARE BAD DRIVERS" but a shocking number of the low end, working class are. It really shows up in our farmlands, e.g. And also on major international driving routes where licensed (in Mexico) commercial drivers have also shown something of - perhaps - a national tendency to less safe driving and vehicle maintenance practices than the North American norm.

Many illegal immigrants are good people and work hard. Facts. No doubt about it. You may recall that I'm a Spanish major, so I've had contact with Latino immigrants all of my adult life.

But what happened to me was ignored by a court of law to the point that a travesty of justice was the ruling -- to the point that even the low-level insurance coverage which the cab driver had was denied when compensation was clearly due to me.

BTW, the cab driver who hit me was not a Latino. He was from Africa. He came here on a visa decades before and overstayed his visa limits. He worked for a cab company and was working under the name which he had on his visa. Yet, ICE couldn't find him? That is surreal.
