This week, I leave NorthernVirginia, where I was born and bred (as was my father before me), and become a Hoosier.
I'm done with Virginia. The Progressives have taken control, and my life is miserable here. Not to mention too expensive for me to retire here.
The county's theft of footage from my property was the last straw: any new build on a corner lot has to cede to the county 1600 square feet (40 in the front and 40 down the side). This new edict took effect on July 1, 2021, by fiat with no notice, and very nearly upended the sale of this lot because this property, 2/3 of an acre, is no longer a buidable lot! My family has lived for 75 years here on this property, with all the required sacrifices to hold onto what should be a very valuable piece of land, and the county destroys our investment with the stroke of a keyboard! Bastards.
Thank the Lord that my neighbor of 44 years, immediately to my west, was selling her property and put it onto the market about two weeks after Mr. AOW's passing. I decided that, no matter the bad timing, I had better piggyback with my neighbor's sale. Her agent, her son whom I known since the day he was born, found a buyer wanting both lots so as to join them as one big lot (so Muhammad says, anyway). Otherwise, the financial hit of selling this family homestead would have upended my retirement.
Once in Indiana in our new home, Warren will get the Internet up and running as soon as possible. Establishing the connection, however, will take a little time, amount unknown.
My good friend Silverfiddle remains in change of this blog. Thank you, Silverfiddle, for helping Warren and me keep this blog going.
Have a safe trip... and enjoy the new adventure!
ReplyDeleteIt's a common theme in American history.
ReplyDeleteA couple marries and moves west.
Enjoy the journey.
Watch for speedtraps in Ohio.
I am so glad you were able to sell and get out. So sad to leave the family homestead. All government knows how to do is destroy. Have a safe trip!
ReplyDeleteSF,
DeleteI had to settle for what I could get -- or stay here and be bankrupted via real estate taxes.
I love it. Only a Virginian (or a few other similarly located states) would refer to going to Indiana as "heading West." Even when I lived in Arizona, Indiana was regarded as an eastern state.
ReplyDeleteBe that as it may, I played golf at French Lick for one memorable week, and Indiana is a lovely state. Be well and thrive there.
Jayhawk,
DeleteIndiana is west to me. LOL.
Nice to read some good news AOW. I think you'll like Indiana. Pretty conservative from what I can tell. Plus! The cops will actually ticket people driving slow in the fast lane/impeding traffic.
ReplyDeleteWell, this story reminds me of a line Johnny Miller (Pro golfer turned announcer) would often say about a golfer trying for a miracle shot out of trouble "When you get in trouble, get Out of trouble". Meaning just chuck the ball back into the fairway and move on.
Little difficult to do quickly with the challenges you've had of course.
Kid,
DeleteChallenges? I'll say!
Toward the end it was a race to see who was going to die first! Seriously. The final weeks of kidney disease are grueling for both the patient and the caregiver. So grateful for hospice those last 10 days.
Good luck in your new home and adopted state. I'll try and hold the line here in Virginia.
ReplyDeleteCI,
DeleteThanks for you well wishes.
Do what you can to preserve 2nd Amendment rights here in the Old Dominion.
PS - What Ed said, speed traps in Ohio, meaning you will start seeing state troopers once you are 30 miles for a town.
ReplyDeleteAlso be aware that Cincinnati in particular is the dysfunctional driving capital of the world, except for maybe Boston. You can be bebooping at 70 on the freeway and have to come to a complete stop for absolutely no discernable reason. Don't take your eyes off the road, especially in heavier traffic.
Safe travels and many blessings as you enter this new chapter of life.
ReplyDeleteWarren doesn't plan to go through Ohio. ;^)
ReplyDeleteFJ & Ed,
ReplyDeleteDefinitely an adventure! And my dog Callie is coming with us.
:)
DeleteYou are about to experience fresh, local corn on the cob at the grocery store. The deeper you go into the Midwest, the better the farm to table dining gets. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the move and enjoy Indiana! Not one of the states I've heard much about, aside from my friend who got married there though they didn't stay.
ReplyDeleteJez,
DeleteVery Midwestern~
Indiana is not East Coast elite. I've lived surrounded by that lifestyle and am done with that it. In my final years, I need a slower pace, the way it WAS here in Northern Virginia until the interstate highways were built.
Packers came yesterday. What a zoo and mad scramble to separate what we're taking from what they're taking!
ReplyDeleteCallie is oversleeping today. LOL!
Thieves! So... you were compensated for this loss of land. Right?? This is why The Pacific Legal Foundation is one of our 2 top charities.
