The teacher's attitude is hardly hyperbole. She demonstrates perfectly the Progressive Know-It-Allism that journalists from the NY Times to Washington Post to MSM Networks have consistently demonstrated for going on five decades now.
I once heard a guy speaking about dealing with anger. His name was Ziggy, and he sort of fit the name. Retired from the Merchant Marine (known by us USN guys as a "feather merchant") and told wonderful stories about merchant ships cutting docks in half because the captain was drunk. He'd been sober about 20 years and was a very nice guy.
Anyway, he used the example of road rage, and the guy who, "cuts me off in traffic and makes me angry."
He went on to say, however, that only half of that statement is accurate; the half that says the guy cut me off in traffic. The part about the guy making me angry, he goes on, is a false narrative. The anger comes from within me, and I have the choice not to become angry when someone cuts me off in traffic.
The same is true of this "gendered pronoun of choice." If I address someone by a pronoun which that person dislikes, that person has a choice to be offended or not to be offended. If that person feels offended, that feeling arose within that person, and it is that person's problem, not mine. That person, in fact, chose to be offended and is therefor suffering from the consequences from that person's own choice. That person will, of course, blame me, because no one today wants to accept the responsibility for their own choices. So be it, That person can do whatever they want. I didn't damage them by calling what looks like a man "he" and I'm not going to try to repair "damage that I didn't cause.
Did you notice how, in the last paragraph, I managed to avoid the "gendered pronoun" and how ridiculous it sounded doing so with the repeated use of "that person" instead?
People usually solve this by switching to the plural "they," but that confuses things IMO. Anyway, English already has a genderless singular pronoun: "one."
What Jayhawk said. I don’t have the patience for this nonsense. I’m going with the traditional references and if anyone doesn’t like it, to hell with them.
If you knowingly broke the law I have zero sympathy. You must seek legal assistance on your dime and deal with your legal opinions. If children are crying it’s because you made bad choices. Take responsibility for your actions, get.legal help. Illegal aliens are not victims. They make bad choices and are directly responsible for what happens next.

As one who has taught adult ESL classes, I find this video hilarious -- and tragic at the same time.

DeleteGeez Louise... we gave up phonics and cursive writing for this? I recall struggling to diagram a sentence...I feel very old.
ReplyDeleteBigots need to be prevented from speaking. This will help identify them, so we can shut them up before they even begin...
ReplyDeleteBesides, we've broken their secret codes. They are destined for perpetual silence.
