North Korea: Charles Krauthammer's 1994 Predictions

These are the cities Kim Jong-un CAN destroy with nuclear weapons

From O’ say can you see, North Korea’s highest, longest ICBM test yet? (dated July 5, 2017):
While Americans shot off Roman candles for July 4th, North Korea launched an ICBM higher and farther than any of its other 10 missile tests this year.

[...]

...North Korea is also developing a submarine-launched missile, which would not need the range to cross the Pacific.
FLASHBACK TO 1994...

Ted Koppel of ABC News interviews Donald Gregg, the former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea from 1989-1993, and columnist Charles Krauthammer.  The video is one longer than I like to post, but, in my view, is important to watch:

Related must-read: We either accede to Norkland having the ability nuke the USA or we tell Japan and SK to TAKE COVER.

Excerpt therefrom (emphases mine):
I firmly believe a strike of any kind against North Korea would result in immediate warfare on the peninsula.

I believe they would attack, AT THE LEAST all our bases in Japan, and Guam, and might strike Japanese cities.

I believe the casualties would be in the tens of thousands in the first few days, and might be incalculable if the North reacts with nuclear weapons.

If we do nothing, this math only gets worse.

Since Bill Clinton, at a time the cold war was won and China was in the 3rd world column of nations. this stupidity has grown.

No diplomatic action has influenced the true course of this process.

No sanction has influenced the true course of this process.

Nothing has influenced the true course of this process....

Question: What steps should the United States now take — if any?

  1. What does North Korea want?

Unification with the South on the North's terms.
I wonder if China wants a unified Korea to contend with.

    Nasty problem.

    1. The problem isn't North Korea. It's China

“Trade between China and North Korea grew almost 40% in the first quarter. So much for China working with us — but we had to give it a try,” Trump tweeted Wednesday."

What an amazing metaphor for them v us. We celebrate, they want to kill.

Ducky, they have the same problem so many countries are fighting...impoverished coming into their successful economies...we need to fight that, most countries do, including China. I wish Germany's leader had thought about that.
I often think it would be cheaper and better on both involved cultures if the more successful countries somehow helped the impoverished so their people can stay in the culture they want to stay in...Could China help N. Korea? Probably...but would Kim accept it? Probably not. I think other countries would.

    1. Z, how could we dare to hope that ANYONE could deal intelligently and benevolently with a MANIAC? North Korea is governed by a MADMAN.

Not only is a UNN [my "wrong" spelling encourages the correct pronunciation we desire] a LUNATIC, he is also a vicious, bloodthirsty BARBARIAN.

Negotiating witch such a monster would be a complete waste of time. He –– and all his henchmen and devoted followers –– must be ANNIHILATED –– wiped off the face of the earth.

It's time we who like to think we live in "the civiklized world" stopped letting our ideals get in the way of DECISIVE, EFFECTIVE ACTION in protection and defen/se.of our OWN best interests –– and those of our FRIENDS.

  3. If only we could hire the services of an elite corps of commandos–– brave, patriotic fighting men who have nothing to lose by dying –– to do what The DIrty Dozen is reported to have done!

I'm very much in favor surgical ASSASSINATION of all leaders of potentially dangerous rogue states.

When push comes to shove we should NEVER hesitate for a nanosecond to do whatever may be necessary to protect OURSELVES from destruction. If that means sacrificing the entire Korean peninsula, so be it.

It is LONG past time we started think of OURSELVES first, last and always.

The tenets of CHRISTIANITY apply ONLY to INDIVDUALS and the way INDIVIDUALS interact with one another. They never have and never should apply to the relations between NATION STATES.

Just think of the HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of LIVES –– and tens of BILLIONS of DOLLARS worth of PROPERTY that could have beeb SAVED, if we'd had the courage –– and the good sense –– to wipe out STALIN, MAO, HITLER, HO CHI MINH and POL POT, et al. BEFORE they performed their horrific deeds.

The Lfeboat Analogy works well in support of your position.

If the only available lifeboat has room for twenty five souls, but one hundred are drowning, would it make any sense at all to insist that the only MORAL thing to do would be to let EVERYONE drown, because it's impossible to save more than 25% of those struggling to keep their heads above water?

    10. You COMPLETELY misread my statement, AOW. I'm sorry, but when I post a comment, it is necessary to read EVERY WORD and not just pounce on a phrase or two that seems reprehensible when taken out of context.

And that IS a major problem here in Blogistan –– possibly THE Major Problem. We exspend too much energy searching for things to DEMEAN, DENY, DISOWN, CONDEMN, and shower with CONTEMPT.

That is what happens when most bloggers indulge in ceaseless derogation. The practice turns us into "REFUTATIONISTS" –– i.e. people who lose their capacity to see the GOOD in anything, and thus act accordingly.

I should have said so in the comment.

As usual, I was in a hurry. I spent all morning in line for Mark Levin's book signing, came home to eat lunch, then headed out to run an errand.

In another comment, in the context of North Korea, you typed (with which I also agree):

As which you also mentioned, Kim Jong Un is dangerous.

My wonderful friend, the Doctor who served for 35 years as a Medical Missionary in one of the poorest parts of India, often said, "Try never to let yourself be in a hurry. If you succumb to that temptation, you can sure the Devil has been whispering in your ear.

Bill Clinton had the chance to take out the Pot Belly Pig regime and blew it.

It was also under Bill Clinton that his political donor buddy Bernie Schwartz transferred sophisticated U.S. satellite and missile technology to China, giving them first world ICBM capabilities.

The Clinton years keep looking worse and worse upon review. Playing hide the cigar with barely-legal interns was the least dangerous of Bill's serial crimes.

  8. Introduce Stuxnet into their defense network, followed approximately 24 hours later by local EMP targeting their main electric grid; let the RoK military off the leash to to engage in any and all hostile nK forces within the north buffer of the DMZ, where it's generally depopulated, while Japanese, US and RoK assets knock anything out of the sky. Bring China to the negotiating table, and allow them an equal hand in establishing a new regime, devoid of the Kim dynasty.

Not without risk of failure or compromise, but about the best kinetic answer with the least loss of life.

My solution is to withdraw from the peninsula, set up our anti-missile defenses in Japan (where they welcome them), and flatly tell the Pot Bellied Pig NORK Regime that any launch against Japan or the US will result in us turning the North into a smoldering ash heap.

    3. Perhaps it's time to revive THIS deadly device and use it on Pyong Yang?

Neutron Bomb officially ... a type of Enhanced Radiation Weapon, is a low yield thermonuclear weapon designed to maximize lethal neutron radiation in the immediate vicinity of the blast while minimizing the physical power of the blast itself. The neutron release generated by a nuclear fusion reaction is intentionally allowed to escape the weapon, rather than being absorbed by its other components.

The neutron burst, which is used as the primary destructive action of the warhead, is able to penetrate enemy armor more effectively than a conventional warhead thus making it more lethal ...

The concept was originally developed by the US in the late 1950s and early 1960s. It was seen as a "cleaner" bomb for use against massed Soviet armored divisions. As these would be used over allied nations, notably West Germany, the reduced blast damage was seen as an important advantage. Development for the Lance missile was underway in the early 1960s, but abandoned in favor of a conventional design.

ERWs were first operationally deployed for anti-ballistic missiles. In this role the burst of neutrons would cause nearby warheads to undergo partial fission, preventing them from exploding properly. For this to work, the ABM would have to explode within a few hundred feet of its target. ...

The weapon was once again proposed for tactical use by the US in the 1970s and 80s, and production of the W70 began for the Lance in 1981. T

This time it experienced a firestorm of protest as the growing anti-nuclear movement gained strength through this period. Opposition was so intense that European leaders refused to accept it on their territory.

President Reagan bowed to pressure and the built examples of the W70-3 remained stockpiled in the US until they were retired in 1992. The last W70 was dismantled in 2011.

By the way, if the South Koreans are so stuoud as to reject our help in dealng with their Deadly Enemy in the north, I say EFF 'EM, and let the Devil take the hindmost. The history of government is a series of very sad stories concerning Wide Open Barn Doors and Escaped Horses.
