VP Harris made buffoonishly false statement about enforcing the law, don't come here, etc, when she was bumbling around in Central America, but The Spectator states the new Biden policy plainly:
"If his party believes that mere poverty creates a valid asylum claim, that real borders are morally illegitimate, that minors must be admitted immediately, that families must never be separated and that ICE must be defanged or abolished, what can Biden do besides let everybody in?"
What say you?
There can be no "rule of law" without the borders within which they are enforced.
ReplyDeleteRuben Navarrette Jr has a different take.
ReplyDeleteSince he has been no fan of Dems over the years, I was shocked by his view on this. I think it testifies to the reality, and difficulty of border politics.
The problems at the border predated Trump, didn't disappear with his election and remains, so far, with the Biden Admin.
Here's a snippet of what Navarrette had to say in his recent Daily Beast article.
"I’m not used to praising the Biden administration—or Democrats in general—for doing the right thing on immigration. I think that, in many ways, they’re the real villains in this debate. They too often pretend to have the back of Latinos when it comes to immigration, but that’s exactly where they stick the knife.
But let’s give credit where it is due. The Biden immigration reforms all suggest that the White House is back in the hands of grownups who know how to control immigration without demonizing the immigrants themselves.
At least I hope that’s what we’re seeing. With this issue, you can’t be sure."
I have been a fan of the author for a long time, but he is dead wrong on this one. Biden is doing absolutely nothing to control illegal immigration. He is doing the opposite, with his irresponsible rhetoric, he has attracted millions. Stupid and irresponsible sums up his immigration policy. Granted, I did not like Trump's demonization either, but he was slowing it down and discouraging it.
DeleteI second sf's statement.
Delete"didn't disappear with his election ", but it sure abated.
Delete"remains, so far, with the Biden Admin.", I'm sure you meant to say "has run wild..."
Ed... I'll wait for the actual numbers on the Biden Admin. The data from ICE does not support that it abated under Trump pre Covid.
DeleteSilver... what specific policies of the Trump Admin contributed to illegal immigration "slowing down?
DeletePrior to Covid, even the CATO Institute says Trump was unsuccessful in reducing illegal immigration. Also, his deportation numbers prior to Covid do not match Obama's.
He was very successful in limiting and cutting back legal immigration, but the GOP, Libertarians and others have long said as long as it's legal when speaking of immigration.
The border, and you as someone who has spent considerable time outside of the US know this, is likely to always be a problem, no matter who is president.
At the end of the day, I think the problem lies with Congress and their unwillingness to bring some reasonable solutions to the table.
Most likely because any solution is going to piss off donors on all sides of the issue. While us regular folks, and people outside the US who we really need here, walk around lost trying to figure out what the rules are in any given month.
Doesn't it make sense that legal migration would take the hit if illegal migration became a problem? A sponge can only soak up so much of a spill until the water begins to run off the table.
DeleteJoe... as to your question, not necessarily. Why should legal immigration decline? We are dangerously short of workers here in the US and the GOP and conservatives have said for years they are all for legal immigration.
DeleteIf illegal immigration is taking up jobs for legal immigrants, a claim not supported by the data, we can solve that by penalizing employers for hiring illegals.
And punish them bigly.
Hit the company and hit the HR people making the hiring decisions. Personally.
As a former person who had to make hiring decisions, I took my responsibilities seriously. If there is a potential personal 25K fine awaiting me for hiring an illegal person, believe me, I'm gonna double and triple check the I-9 and immigration status of every potential worker.
"As a former person".
DeleteWhen did you stop?
If illegal immigration is taking up jobs for legal immigrants, a claim not supported by the data, we can solve that by penalizing employers for hiring illegals.
DeleteBWAHHA-HA-HA-HA! How's that "penalizing employers" ever worked out in the past? DNC policies have guaranteed that employers will never be penalized for hiring illegals and that E-Verify will be a perennial joke intended only for impressing the rubes.
$20 million in fines on a $ 21 trillion economy is a JOKE!
DeleteRev, What Biden immigration reforms is he referring to. The last reforms that were proposed were by GWB and he was shot down by the idiots in his own party. The Biden administration has taken a hands off approach to the border and by encouraging people to make the trek across Mexico they are putting thousands at risk. Once biden was elected the coyotes sprang into action because they could have free rein to bring sex slaves, drugs and children across the border. At least they support independent business people and of course drug and sex cartels.
ReplyDeleteWhat we are seeing is an administration caught in a mess of their own doing and hopefully the American people will realize this even without mention on all the network news.
If the idea that we can't have a welfare state with open borders is true, we all need to drive to Mexico and Central America and cart back as many people as we can.
DeleteOtherwise, annex Mexico. They can all be in America without having to move.
DeleteSkud... once again you show your inability or unwillingness to consider anything outside of your political view.
DeleteIf you go to his article, you can read Navarrette's specifics. He's never been a fan, as he states, of the Dems. But he knows the border as few people do, dedicating much of his life to understand the issues on both sides.
But admittedly, a perspective that understands both sides will need to give up something if we ever hope to solve this "crisis", is not popular to people who mostly want to score political points and live to see people post +1 on comments..
TC, I think people will be hard pressed to find more than a few Dems, and even fewer leaders of the party, who would advocate for open borders and a welfare state.
Delete"Open borders and a welfare state"
DeleteUnfortunately, we now have both
Rev, My political views had nothing to do with my post. Several administrations have had an opportunity to pass comprehensive immigration reform and none have. Obama put in DACA because he didn't want to deal with immigration, the serial rapist, BJ, didn't even attempt anything and trump took a hard line. Now we have basement joe just ignoring the border and his czar is a no show.
DeleteWe do have a different opinion on illegals and supporting them. I am all for legal immigration but I work hard to pay my taxes and hate to see it spent on illegals while we have homeless vets living on the street because we won't spend the money to support them. They cannot be used as fodder for the either party so they are ignored. Maybe joey will concentrate on crime and his open border and less on rigging the future vote, nah that won't happen.
I suggest that Biden and crew are wise enough to know that to continue this will result sooner or later in a response from those with the low sloping foreheads. It's a setup. DeSantis is sending over the National Guard to Texas..who knows, we may actually hear more about the election fraud. Either way, it cannot nor will it continue.
ReplyDeleteBunker, I agree completely. About the low sloping foreheads comment. I have thought for years, going back at least to the Obama administration, that there was a concerted plan to touch off a violent reaction from the low intelligence crowd on the right.
DeleteThe same thing the FBI and Antifa, posing as Trumpsters, agitated the January 6 incident and no doubt it is going on now. No doubt they have infiltrated a few groups and the trap is being set as I write this.
DeleteUs "high intelligence" people ain't so happy either.
DeleteReminds me of a film I've been meaning to see: "that day shall come", not particularly well reviewed but director Chris Morris (imagine a more grown-up Sacha Baron Cohen) has earned my benefit of the doubt. It's about how the FBI routinely infiltrates groups of various eccentrics and agitates from within. So I think there is a precedent for fomenting violence, but on a very localised scale. Agitating Trumpers nation-wide would be new, I think.
DeleteJez,
DeleteThis predates Trump, but yeah. Glenn Greenwald (one of the last real American journalists) points out how the FBI radicalized Muslims in the west.

One would think the Republicans in Congress wouldn't be opposed to investigating how the FBI allegedly made Trump supporters go cray cray at the Capitol on Jan 6th.
Delete🤷
Is that what actual Congressional Hearings would discover? Did you miss the Derrick Chauvin trial?
DeleteStart @ 3:19...
DeleteWell, we do live in a world where the only thing dumber than a Trump supporter is cluster of two or more Trump supporters - granted - but we're not cancelling Dr. Suess here. Which looks more crazy, Republicans claiming the FBI incited an insurrection or the same Republicans not being willing to elaborate on their delusions?
DeleteTC, Glenn Greenwald hates Trump and is not a Republican. Try again, short stack.
DeleteSuss it out. Take your pick. Either the FBI incited mentally challenged people / Trump supporters / same thing to attack the Capitol, or Trump did. Get Louis Gomert out there condemning the manipulation of dumbasses. Show your work.
DeleteAll some whackos need is a little prodding.
