Musical Interlude

(If you must have politics, please scroll down)

With thanks to FreeThinke, who, in a comments thread some time back, left the link to the Judy Garland video below:

Back then, pop music was actually music and elegance was still in style!

Fred Astaire praised Judy Garland as "the greatest entertainer who ever lived." More about Judy Garland HERE.

  1. Hey! That's MY Theme Song. Has been for sixty-odd tears.

Great fun. Great philosophy of life. Great truly AMERICAN stuff! Not to be confused with Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, Wagner, Debussy, Ravel, Faure, Messiaen, Dupré, Hugo Wolff, Richard Strauss, Mahler, Bartok, Verdi, Puccini, Poulenc and Benjamin Britten, of course, but great in its own unique way.

  2. Judy Garland's life may in many ways have been a tragic waste of human potential. She was consistently and relentlessly abused by the standards we uphold today, and yet the legacy she left of joy, charm, wistful appeal, pathos and good cheer is a priceless gift to humanity.

Her childhood was stolen from her and the development of her private personhood was sacrificed and perverted by her mother and by Louis B. Mayer, and yet there was a wonderful, joyful spirit and innate understanding of the lyric qualities in the music she sang that shone through in just about every film and TV appearance she ever made.

Like so many phenomena Judy Garland was a paradox -- someone who managed to be both wonderful and terrible simultaneously.

Maybe that's why so many loved her so very much.

  3. I enjoyed Judy's acting performances. I never cared much about her personal life.

  4. I don't know about the 'greatest entertainer that ever lived', but she was very talented. Like so many she had her demons.

  5. I've been listening to this song a few years now off a best of album but I've not seen this film clip. Thanks Always, and I do believe Judy was at the very least entertainer of the 20th century!
