Fox's Friday frenzy to cover the revelation of Donald Trump's use of "the p-word" — in a private conversation aboard a Hollywood studio bus some eleven years ago — instead of emphasizing the same day's revelations regarding Hillary Rodham Clinton's paid speeches differed little from the coverage afforded by the other networks.

According to James Comey, the director of the FBI, Hillary wasn't indited because her "reckless negligence" didn't give evidence of wilful intent. (poor stupid Hilary didn't mean to break the law.)

Chaffetz Schools a Stooge

Please watch the following video to the end. It's only about 4 1/2 minutes long, and you will see how the head of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform (Rep. Jason Chaffetz) braces a FBI representative.

The problem is that the FBI has decided, unilaterally, without Constitutional or legal precedent that it can withhold, cherry-pick and redact  information asked for by Congress. 

It bothers me a great deal that a Federal agency (especially the FBI) thinks it can get away with this and gives us another glimpse into how seedy our government has become.

Within The Last 24 Hours

(Hat tip to Infidel Bloggers Alliance for the information in this blog post. Because we are doing some renovations here at this old house, I was off my watch yesterday, when all this was going on)

Let's see....The following have happened in the last 24 hours in the United States:

1. Pipe bomb at a military parade in Seaside Park, New Jersey.

2. Explosion in a mall in Charlottesville, Virginia.

3. Explosions in Manhattan (a pressure cooker bomb was found but apparently did not detonate. An IED did apparently detonate).

4. Muslims stampeded through the Mall of America in Minnesota. Erratum! This occurred on September 12 as part of the Islamic celebration of Eid Al Adha. Please take a look at the video at the link. This is America?

5. A Muslim went on a stabbing spree in a mall in St. Cloud, Minnesota. He asked at least one victim if that victim was Muslim before stabbing that victim.

WHAT A SATURDAY, HUH?

Even the Washington Post is now concerned about Hillary's health, as evinced by Hillary Clinton’s health just became a real issue in the presidential campaign, which appeared in the September 11, 2016 online edition. Quite a shift from a few days before:

The class entering high school this year will be the first high school class not to have any firsthand knowledge of 9/11/2001, when jihad came to America.

These students will have only textbook knowledge.

For these young people, taking off their shoes and being run through scanners at airports, and elsewhere, as well as constant monitoring by security cameras — and all the rest of a world altered for the worse by Islamic terrorism — seem normal and ho-hum.

They have never known a world without Islamic terrorism. They do not know the freedoms we once had.

Worse, they consider 9/11 as nothing more than a National Day of Service.

In my view, 9/11 should be a day of solemn remembrance.

Boiling the frog is winning the day right now. Too many are too busy with their electronic devices to care about the future of the ideals of freedom and democracy.

Tales From The Classroom

("Tales from the Classroom" is a feature posted occasionally here at this blog.  All tales are true and present matters about which I have personal knowledge.  The following tale dates back to 1983, when I was teaching a third-fourth grade combination class of 33 students)

Years ago, CS, a biracial student (4th grade student, but 5th grade age) who was enrolled in my class, miserably failed the weekly spelling test. I asked him why he hadn't studied for the test.

His response: "I failed the test because your ancestors held my ancestors as slaves."

I told CS the truth: "My ancestors didn't hold slaves. On my father's side, my family was opposed to slavery; on my mother's side, the ground they owned wouldn't sprout black-eyed peas — much less support even the holding of one slave. You failed the test because you didn't study for the test. You're on restriction until next week's spelling test."

CS sat there stunned.  Yes, from that day on, he did better on the weekly spelling test.

How did we get to the sorry state of worrying about micro-aggressions and trigger warnings in the first place?

In my view, via the self-esteem movement, which, in my own experience as a teacher in a small private school, dates back to at least the 1980s. Overnight, or so it seemed at the time, teacher-parent conferences included parents whining about how their children's disobedience and refusal to do assignments resulted from "poor self-esteem." The parents were, of course, releasing their children from self-discipline and accountability.

By the late 1990s, the push was on for all children to receive awards, whether or not the children had earned said rewards.  In 1996, the private school where I had worked for eighteen years closed — in part, a reaction to the self-esteem movement: the school's director refused to compromise the standards which she had upheld for over twenty-five years.

Believe it or not, there has been a National Association for Self-Esteem since 1986. The idea of such an association was introduced by California State Assemblyman John Vasconcellos.

Today I teach classes for groups of homeschoolers. The past few years, the self-esteem movement has been rearing its ugly head in that venue, too, and I see fewer and fewer homeschool families interested in the courses I offer. I'm glad that I have relatively few more years before retirement.

Something Pleasant — For A Change

I had a surprise visitor this morning: a former piano student from some forty years ago. He came bearing flowers (Angelonia).

He stayed for over an hour so that we could do some political yodeling. LOL!

Tonight, our helper TJP, a classroom student and a piano student from some thirty years ago, will transfer the flowers to the antique flower pot at the front side of our house. These flowers attract butterflies.  I hope that butterflies are still around this late in the season.

Funny how the comforters and helpers are all men.  I guess that the boys found me unforgettable. Heh.

Back When I'm Feeling Better

Still dealing with health issues: namely, bilateral hydronephrosis, with the left kidney in crisis at this time.

What misery!

I am scheduled soon for a nephrostomy.

This procedure, if successful, serves two purposes: (1) to drain the kidney so as to save as much kidney tissue as possible and (2) to ascertain if all the pain I've been having for the past several months stems from a blocked ureter or from nerve damage to the kidney itself.

If the former, I will be undergoing ureteral pyeloplasty in a few months. If the latter, I will be undergoing a nephrectomy in a few months.

Comments intermittently on moderation until I recover from the nephrostomy.

This is the summer from hell.

Is it any wonder that she regularly disappears from the campaign trail for a day or two?

My own anecdotal "evidence":

When I first saw the prism on Hillary's eyeglasses — during the Benghazi Hearings, no less — I knew without a doubt that she had suffered some kind of TBI. Mr. AOW had to wear prisms like that because his hemorrhagic stroke damaged at least one nerve controlling equal tracking of the eyes.

I can't prove it, of course, but I suspect that Hillary's outburst during the Benghazi hearings was directly related to steroids prescribed for brain swelling.  I know something about steroids as prescribed for brain swelling: Mr AOW had to take large doses of steroids after his brain surgery in 1993.

As for what's going on right now with Hillary's health, I have little personal frame of reference other than to say that her abdomen appears bloated. I've seen that kind of bloat in family members who had congestive heart failure (my grandmother, for example, and she wore tunic tops to disguise the bloat) and in acquaintances who were late-stage alcoholics.

D struggled academically. She had always struggled academically and had to repeat a grade or two.

But as an adult? She works as a high-ranking administrative assistant in the U.S. State Department and has beautiful daughter (about age 6).

D's mother saved this book report in a memory box, and D recently sent me photos of some of her work from way back when.

This morning, we have reports that an octogenarian priest was murdered inside a church in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray in Normandy. Two attackers wielding knives took five hostages, including the priest. The attackers have been killed by the police.

Some reports state that the priest was beheaded; other reports state that the priest's throat was cut.

Are Millennials Lazy?

Millennials are typically defined as those born in the early 1990s through the early 2000s and characterized as digitally native, generally enjoy living and working in urban areas.

From The baffling reason many millennials don’t eat cereal (Washington Post, February 23, 2016):

A large contingent of millennials are uninterested in breakfast cereal because eating it means using a bowl, and bowls don't clean themselves (or get tossed in the garbage). Bowls, kids these days groan, have to be cleaned.

Cereal isn't the only food suffering from a national trend toward laziness. Coffee has suffered a similar fate. Despite talk of a third wave of coffee, which values quality above all else, and basks in artisanal rather than effortless methods of preparation, Americans still covet convenience above all else.

"Convenience is the one thing that’s really changing trends these days," Howard Telford, an industry analyst at market research firm Euromonitor, said last year....

More significantly, we read this:

...[H]ow families raise their kids [today] seems to be turning even the most mundane of responsibilities, like doing the dishes, into unthinkable nuisances....

Stereotyping is simplistic thinking. Still, there does seem to be a trend of despising any physical task as a waste of time. If there's not an app for a task, many Millennials are not interested in pursuing that task.

I don't know about your neighborhood. But here on this block of mega-mansions (all built long after my family settled here), I never see my neighbors' children doing any chores. Everything is hired out — particularly childcare, cleaning the house, and mowing the yard. What's more, only rarely do we see the children here outside.

Whither a society such as this?

Back To Jim Crow Days?

I very rarely watch Hannity, but on Friday night I had a touch of insomnia. I tuned into the July 8, 2016 edition of the show.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing from a few of the protesters in Baton Rouge! Saturday morning, I watched the rerun of Hannity to make sure that I had heard what I thought I had heard.

Below is my recollection of what I twice heard:

One middle-aged black man screamed, "The problem is that there isn't a law against a white man killing a black man in this country! We want a law made that a white man can't kill a black man!"

And another, a younger man: "The problem is that we depend on the white man's dollar. We need our own schools, our own banks..."

Yet two more (a man and a woman, so I'm paraphrasing here): "We want justice. The fact of the matter is that we have the video. What more due process do we need?"

Later, I found the video of that particular edition of Hannity. If your schedule permits, watch the first 20 minutes of the video below. The return to Jim Crow portion begins at time marker 15;54, and is a must-see.


We keep hearing "We need to have a conversation about race" and "We have a lot to do."

How can there be such a conversation when emotions are running so high and people are opining as above?

What, exactly, can we do that hasn't already been tried?

July 7, 2016: Dallas War Zone

Pray for the families of those who were murdered, and for the injured and their families.

Horror on the streets of Dallas as snipers open fire on the police, kill five* officers, and wound seven others at a Black Lives Matter demonstration.  The police were specifically targeted in what appears to have been a carefully orchestrated attack.

It is the the deadliest attack on U.S. law enforcement since Sept. 11, 2001.

As of the time of this blog post, police are still negotiating with and exchanging gunfire with a suspect holed up in a high rise complex.

Should we be surprised? No. The Clintons always squirm out of being held to account.
