Accurate — Or Not?

A comment at Weasel Zippers to the May 22, 2016 post Trump Leads Clinton For First Time In Average Of National Polls:
Dookoo vader

Barry's "Yes We Can" slogan was borrowed from socialists. Hitlery's "Stronger Together" is taken from Mussolini's fascism; unity was symbolized by a bundle of wooden rods (fasces) being "stronger together" when they were bound together. It's almost like Barry and Hitlery continually give hints as to what they actually are.

Seems pretty sketchy but one thing we do know was borrowed from socialists, the Pledge of Allegiance.

    Just sayin'.

Look out! We're going through another such social and political inversion. Benito Clinton, dictatorial Obama statists and the angry leftwing fascist mobs, like the one in Albuquerque last night, seal the left's place as the home for neo-fascism.

      Is it?

After AeroMexico, a Mexican airline, had filed a trademark application for "Sí se puede" with the US Trademark Office, lawyers for the United Farm Workers defended the phrase as the intellectual property of the UFW. After litigation, AeroMexico agreed not to use the phrase and abandoned its trademark application.

The students say that between their activism work and their heavy course load, finding success within the usual grading parameters is increasingly difficult. Maybe. The story did make today's front page of the WaPo -- above the fold:

The State Department’s independent watchdog has issued a highly critical analysis of Hillary Clinton’s email practices while running the department, concluding that Clinton failed to seek legal approval for her use of a private server and that agency staff members would not have given their blessing if it had been sought because of “security risks.”

The report by the inspector general’s office concludes that Clinton, the Democratic front-runner for president, handled email in a way that was “not an appropriate method” for preserving public records and that her practices failed to comply with department policy. The review found that Clinton, who has said her system was secure, also never provided security details to agency officials responsible for safeguarding sensitive government information.

The 83-page report reviewed email practices under the past five secretaries of state and found persistent problems with ensuring that records are preserved in keeping with federal law. But the review was sparked by the controversy over Clinton’s email setup, and the report is particularly critical of her practices.

Clinton’s inexcusable, willful disregard for the rules

By Editorial Board May 25 at 7:13 PM

HILLARY CLINTON’S use of a private email server while secretary of state from 2009 to 2013 has been justifiably criticized as an error of judgment. What the new report from the State Department inspector general makes clear is that it also was not a casual oversight. Ms. Clinton had plenty of warnings to use official government communications methods, so as to make sure that her records were properly preserved and to minimize cybersecurity risks. She ignored them....

  11. EVIDENCE of LEFTIST-PROGRESSIVE BIAS in the ENEMEDIA:

    PART TWO

ABC News executive producer Ian Cameron is married to Susan Rice, National Security Adviser.

CBS President David Rhodes is the brother of Ben Rhodes, Obama's Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communications.

ABC News correspondent Claire Shipman is married to former White House Press Secretary Jay Carney

ABC News and Univision reporter Matthew Jaffe is married to Katie Hogan, Obama's Deputy Press Secretary

ABC President Ben Sherwood is the brother of Obama's Special Adviser Elizabeth Sherwood

CNN President Virginia Moseley is married to former Hillary Clinton's Deputy Secretary Tom Nides.

This, of course, is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to modern Journalism’s incestuous relationship with Government.

So now you know why it is no surprise the media usually goes very easy on Obama's obtuse, disloyal, anti-American, contemptible internationalist attitude, and the multitudinous evidence of H. Rodham Clinton’s corruption, basic dishonesty and gross incompetence.

Not that any so-called "liberal" would ever admit it. Leftists see the world darkly through a glass that must be far more opaque than that used by more Conservative individuals.

  12. A COMPLAINT regarding CURRENT SYNTAX and LANGUAGE USAGE:

Couldn't we PLEASE retire the abominable phrase FACT CHECK, too often used as both noun and verb these days, and return to the older, more precise terms VERIFICATION and VERIFY?

I cringe, and my flesh crawls whenever I hear "news analysts" or other "public personalities" utter phrases such as, "I feel much better about the fact that So-and-So FACT CHECKED the item before publishing it." -OR- "She needs TO FACT CHECK her speeches before she reads them from her teleprompter."

Did you know that no less a critic than George Orwell expressed disdain for any writer or public speaker who used "the fact that?"

Our heroic high school English teacher, Mr. W., warned us against this and other atrocious linguistic practices such as the insertion of moronic "pleonastic" prepositions in phrases such as "It's not that big OF a deal," - OR - "When tactics employed by union thugs cause salaries to rise, costs mount UP.

And God help you, if you you dared say anything as graceless and frankly stupid as, "They don't know where they're AT."

We were expected to avoid ending sentences with a preposition and splitting infinitives in most cases, although Mr. W. was not as rigid in enforcing that prohibition, because there are times when such punctiliousness harms the natural flow of dialogue, and makes the writing sound stilted.

Anyone who violated our teacher's ban on these forbidden forms of English usage in expository writing would receive an "Automatic F" regardless of the quality of content in other parts of the assignment.

Exceptions could be made, of course, but ONLY if we were attempting to write fiction involving foreigners or common, ignorant, street-wise characters using colloquial speech native to their low-class origins, and poor socio-economic status.

Very frankly I DON'T GIVE A TINKER'S DAM };^)> whether "Fact Check" or "To Fact Check" have gained popular acceptance or wormed their way into ANYONE'S dictionary, with the possible exception A Dictionary of American SLANG.

I refuse to consult any history book or treatise on English Usage published after 1965-70. As we know all too well, since that time, society has been thoroughly MUCKED UP by college professors and public school teachers devoted to spreading the dictates of Cultural Marxism.

Meanwhile, whether "To Fact Check" is now considered acceptable or not, I believe it is up to those of us who still cling to pre-Marxian standards of good English usage to promote, protect, defend, and disseminate SUPERIOR English usage before good literature and our precious language, itself, become transformed into a quasi-FOREIGN language requiting "scholarly" translation to be understood.

Meanwhile, here are some excellent alternatives to the abominable POPULAR USAGE:

    Synonyms for VERIFY:

attest, authenticate, bear out, certify, corroborate, substantiate, support, validate, confirm, vindicate

back up, testify to, vouch for, witness; guarantee, warrant; affirm, assert, aver, avow, declare, profess; demonstrate, document, establish, prove, reinforce

With few exceptions ANY of the above would be preferable to "FACT CHECK" which, like the hateful "Ms." is an invention of leftists pushed by the enemedia in their concerted effort to spread CONFUSION, promote IGNORANCE, destroy REFINEMENT, promote COARSENESS, PERVERSION and DEGENERACY at every level.

    A few more examples:

The use of FAIL when FAILURE is required,

The use of INSTALL when INSTALLATION is meant,

The use of INVITE when INVITATION would be correct

The invention of TRUTHINESS the meaning of which I still can't comprehend

These are but a few of the depressing changes forced on the language by ill-intenioned leftists and their foolish followers.

I may be the last person on earth to insist on maintaining high standards, but I shall continue to do so to my dying day.

    1. I use "truthiness" only in a technical context (computer science) to describe what happens to non-boolean variables when they are coerced to a boolean type, for example the integer 0 might be "falsy", and the integer 1 might be "truthy" -- there are occasions where the distinction is important. Another way of saying it is "truthy" is not identical but evaluates to "true".
If other people use it outside that context, I assume it is by analogy with that, ie truthy means "not exactly true, but if it needs to be either true or false, it might as well be true."
