Motivation And Investigation (With Addendum)

The following appear to be the last words of Chattanooga jihadist Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez’s brief-lived blog, published on July 13, 2015:
"To give us a complete understanding of the message of Islam, and the strength the live by this knowledge, and to know what role we need to play to establish Islam in the world."
A blog post in his name also stated:
This life is short and bitter and the opportunity to submit to Allah may pass you by

  3. Never in my life time would I have thought that we would have a president that aligns himself a terrorist country, a country that has called for the death of the USA and the annihilation of Israel

In all honesty I ask; when do We The People say that enough is enough and do what is needed to do with these enemies of our country that have infested our nation?

When do We The People stand and admit that Islam, and every member of it has NO peace in their hearts and no place being here in America?

When do We The People wake the hell up and realize that Muslims, Islam, and its adherents are our enemy and want nothing more than to take over this nation and either enslave us or kill us?

When do We The People finally understand that Barack Hussein Obama is one of these people and that his loyalties lie with Islam?

When do We The People rise and take up arms as we rid this nation of the Muslim infestation that brings nothing more than 7th century values and death to any that don’t subscribe to their teachings?

  4. Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez and his family worshiped at the Islamic Society Of Greater Chattanooga. Eid activities there have been canceled "in light of the tragedy that took place today in our city."

According to the New York Times:

...In the last two or three months, Mr. Abdulazeez had begun showing up rather regularly at Friday Prayer at the Islamic Society of Greater Chattanooga, a large mosque and cultural center, said Dr. Azhar S. Sheikh, a founding member of the center’s board.

Dr. Sheikh said that he showed no signs of extremism.

He said the family regularly worshiped at the mosque. He thought the young man had stopped attending services because he had moved away, and he assumed that Mr. Abdulazeez was attending again because he was back in town and staying with his parents....

Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez appears to have been a well-assimilated Muslim. Until he wasn't.

I've also read some other verses....

Kill the unbelievers wherever you find them. See Surah 9:5.

Between us and you animosity and hatred forever. See Sura 60:4.

    3. Jez,
Certainly, there are "militant" verses in the Old Testament of the Bible -- pertaining to the establishment of ancient Israel in the Land of Canaan. The Bible's New Testament, the more recent portion, does not contain such "militant" verses.

In the Quran, on the other hand, the more recent verses are the militant verses -- marching orders, in effect. According to Allah, the new verses abrogate the older verses; there is dispute among Islamic scholars about this matter of abrogation, but certainly "radical Islam" focuses a great deal on those militant verses. See the propaganda material published by the Islamic State, Al Qaeda, and like terrorist groups.

  6. To the person bashing AOW. Have you met her or invited her for a cup of tea? I literally took flight to her area to meet her.

AOW is reasoned, highly educated, a seasoned blogger with what is a tip-of-the-iceberg view of what is a firm knowledge of geopolitical Islam.

Eid Mubarak? I just wrote an Eid greeting and hit "send" to 71 recipients. I have attended many Eid al-Fitr events to break the fast, spent many hours with Muslims.

The fact remains and cannot be disputed: A Muslim man who was welcomed to America loaded up his weaponry and killed four United States Marines in cold blood. The coward ambushed the courageous.

Right to be absolutely furious without being judged as a bigot, or unfriendly? We owe it to the Marines and their families to give full vent to our Constitutional rights.

I came to my understanding of the threat of Islam via historical study -- sprinkled with the texts of the Quran and the Hadith. Your route to understanding was different, but our conclusions are the same.

My basis was history and literature because those are my academic strengths. Your basis were theology and psychology because that those are your strengths. Put those strengths together, and what do you get? Comprehensive understanding.

The Chattanooga jihadist came here as an infant. An infant! I just learned that fact while reading today's WaPo.

The fact remains that if an American is killed today by a terrorist here on our home soil, the murderer is very, very likely to be a Muslim.

  8. Has anyone considered the similarities between this shooter and the rebel flag boy who murdered those people in their church?

By all accounts, Abdulazeez lived a pretty normal life growing up, going to High School, etc.

Events happen in peoples lives, especially young people, and they can latch onto something malevolent: Virulent racism, radical Islam, etc.

I am not a fan of Islam. I believe it can easily become a malign influence in too many cases, but this was not a Muz Bro sleeper. Something happened in his life and he reached for his brand, just like that rebel flag boy did.

We can bang on about Islam or white privilege or whatever, but at the root, we have a societal sickness and it is provoking alienation and a sense of loss off control, especially in younger people.

Part of it is economic, but it is also

    * the constant bombardment of pop culture freakshow lives of people who have way more money than we do and are doing stupid and outrageous things with it

    * a steady stream of gruesome horrors piped into us from all over the world

    * Drugs pushed by the most dangerous pushers of all, Big Pharma, doctors and psychiatrists

Our society is coming apart at the seams and many can't take it. You either tune it out, construct a fantasy bubble, retreat to a culturally-appropriate extremist camp, or just let it eat you up inside.

We all handle things in our own way. Young people are especially prone to making poor decisions.

As I hear friends of Abdulazeez talk about how shocked they are and what a normal childhood and adolescence he had, I was reminded of the kid who murdered those people in the church.

He had black friends! Not acquaintances, but friends he hung out with, smoked and drank with.

But he became economically unstable, increased his drug use, and was living off the kindness of friends, sleeping on their couches, etc.

His life was coming apart, and the white supremacist BS was there to give his life meaning and explain how it was all somebody else's fault. There are hate preachers in minority communities shoveling the same garbage into young people's heads.

In a way, this particular Islamomaniac presents the most disturbing case of jihadists here since 2009. Thus far, we have zero indication of what might have tipped him into doing what he did.

    Certainly, poverty wasn't an issue.

He seems to have been well accepted in Hixson, Tennessee (an area with which I'm familiar, BTW). He was living in a higher-end home and with his family.

His school photos depict a nice young man. Yearbooks today are filled with such photos -- nice neighborhood Muslims.

We do see that his family was of the traditional Muslim type -- hijabs, etc.

We do know that he was a devout Muslim. Yet, he recently was arrested for DWI. What was a devout Muslim doing boozing it up? We heard something about the 9/11 hijackers boozing it up and doing other un-Islamic things before 9/11, but I don't know if those reports are true.

There is also some talk of his having recently traveled to the Middle East.

More information should be revealed at some point -- if there is more information to be had, that is. But if not, then we are presented with the most dangerous kind of jihadist in America: one that cannot be predicted to act out no matter how good intelligence reports are.

    2. To be fair, what is a devout Christian doing boozing it up, using drugs, cheating on their spouse, etc.

I too am alarmed at what CI brilliantly describes as "Sudden Jihad Syndrome."

Unlike textbook terrorism, I believe this syndrome has roots in some kind of personal alienation or problem of the psyche or soul, and it resembles other non-islamic-related incidents.

Also, I hope this isn't too far out there, but let's also acknowledge that the vast majority of people facing doubts, fears, crises of the psyche, etc, find something positive to pour themselves into: Religion, military service, pursuing their artistry, serving others, a profession, etc.

My totally unscientific theory is that people who do things like this have reached a crisis point in their lives and for some reason could not find a way to constructive way to deal with it.

Like CI, I have served with many Muslims, and I am acquainted with some (I see them at parties where they drink and eat pork BBQ along with everybody else, and they all have security clearances).

    3. I agre with you Silverfiddle. It quite possibly has its roots in alienation.

There has been a lot written about the Tsarnaev brothers and the dysfunction of the family and the mothers trip into just freakish religious extremism are markers.

But I believe this is only the second foreign born Muslim to attack in America since 9/11. It is rare.

So we recently had Dylann Roof, James Holmes sentenced and now Abdulazeez. What do they have in common.

I don't know if that question can be answered but it's not religion.

      Delete
    4. Duck,
I don't disagree that alienation is the common factor.

However, I do believe that there is something in Islam that promotes alienation and, if not promoting the alienation, something in Islam that offers a perceived solution for that alienation.

Which came first -- the chicken or the egg? And all that.

Thus far, Abdulazeez's alienation seems to have been lack of employment. That is alienation? Not really. It's economic reality right now for many a college graduate. He could well have seen that lack of employment as punishment from Allah. See my comment below, which includes a long excerpt from Daily Beast.

    6. AFAIK the typical western jihadist is not poor. Also, the threshold for DWI (around .08% BAC?) is not what most people would consider "drunk." Plenty of muslims completely avoid alcohol, but also plenty of them do drink.

What type of crime is predictable? What type of crime poses the greatest threat?

Plenty of muslims completely avoid alcohol, but also plenty of them do drink.

But devout Sunnis are not supposed to drink alcohol and seem to have more of a sense of sin than Muslims who are not devout.

What type of crime is predictable?

That depends on which class of criminals one is scrutinizing.

What type of crime poses the greatest threat?

The violent and deadly ones from which we have no possible defense or any practical way of mitigating.

From what I understand, this particular Muslim was put upon by his father who disapproved of his transition from Greco-Roman wrestling into mixed martial arts (the Prophet Muhammad forbade striking the face... beheading is okay.... but boxing and MMA is forbidden in Islam... Cassius Clay's draft-dodging included).

So, this Muslim had displeased / dishonored his father, then compounded that with getting charged with a DWI and the spiral continued.

Perhaps this Muslim simply went on jihad to please his family and assuage a feeling of shame brought on by their restrictive and intolerant religion.

I read this earlier today (a commenter at another blog), and the information may shine some light on the family's background:

"After the first Gulf War Kuwait expelled all their expat Palestinians many of whom had worked and resided in Kuwait for years, even decades. This was because Arafat supported the Iraq invasion. A number of them originally came from Gaza when that area was under Egyptian control. After they were expelled Egypt refused to recognize their passports and Gaza was occupied by Israel. The US stepped in and admitted many of these people as refugees without a country of their own.

"This may well be how this family managed to get into the US and why they are referred to as Kuwaiti."

The commenter had earlier made this comment:

" it would appear that his mother Rasmia Abdulazeez is indeed from Kuwait, but his father Youssuf Abdulazeez is from Nablus in Israel."

  12. According to Chattanooga Shooter Gave a Chilling Warning of Jihad:

Three years after posing with an American flag as a newly minted college graduate and three days before his killing spree, Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez sent clear signals of his plans.

Three days before he set out in a silver Mustang convertible and murdered four Marines, 24-year-old Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez all but announced his intentions in a pair of blog posts.

One, headlined “Understanding Islam: The Story of the Three Blind Men,” declared that the original disciples of the prophet were not “like priests living in monasteries.”

“Every one of them fought Jihad for the sake of Allah,” Abdulazeez wrote as myabdulazeez.

The second post was headlined “A Prison Called Dunya,” that being a term for the material world.

    [...]

He had graduated with a degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee, and his family had thrown a big party with a cake that read “Congratulations Mohammad Class of 2012” and “The Tassel Is Worth the Hassle.” He had posed for a picture in a cap and gown, clean shaven and smiling with potential, the American flag behind him.

But nearly three years later, he still had a résumé out and apparently had yet to land a promising job. One of his sisters had gotten married, but he was still single.

And on April 21 he had been arrested for driving under the influence, seemingly his first brush with the law. The arresting officers reported smelling marijuana and saw white residue on his face. He insisted he had only been snorting caffeine tablets. He refused a blood test, and a sample was obtained by power of a search warrant.

Abdulazeez may have taken it as a warning of what can happen if you stray from the stricter tenets of Islam....

The problem of discerning the will of Allah. Many Muslims believe that the Ottoman Empire fell for straying too far from the will of Allah -- and that the presence of oil deposit in the Arabian Peninsula is proof that Wahhabism is the way to go.

  15. Islam forbids assimilation. This is addressed allegorically in the Surah "The Cave". Islamic doctrine teaches that all were born Muslim. When returning to the Ummah you are a revert, not a convert. You are reverting to halal - a natural state before god.

Regardless of the psychobabble, the perpetrator was an adult. He was reasoned in why he chose to do what he did. He did it based on a reasoned, and possibly conditioned response.

*I am fatigued with a culture that tries to find out "why" a person did something criminal as opposed to merely note the criminality of the behavior.

My grandparents lived in a transient camp in Oklahoma during the depression. They suffered greatly. It never occurred to them to engage civil disobedience, nor criminal behavior to attain a goal. They certainly would not have ambushed military men.

Root cause analysis for the behavior of Abdulazeez? Justification for such behavior is textual if reading and embracing Qur'anic commands. Muslims who "eat barbecue, blah blah" are not adhering to the tenets of the belief system. In some regard, they are mini apostates from the faith - as practiced in the seventh century and beyond.

Thank god - for apostates. smile
