"We have a Right to be Here"

By Silverfiddle

WaPo writer/explainer Robert Samuelson’s wizened, world-weary hound dog countenance reflects the gravity and reality of the subjects he mines.

Here are a few eye-opening quotes from his article discussing the outlines of an immigration deal.

Imported Poverty

"From 1980 to 2016, the number of people with incomes below the government poverty line rose by 11.3 million (from 29.3 million to 40.6 million). Fully two-thirds of those, or 7.6 million, were Hispanic. Much of this increase clearly reflected the impact of immigrants and their children."

Entrepreneurship

"One area where immigrants shine is entrepreneurship. […] about one-quarter of company founders were immigrants."

2016: Record Number of Immigrants

"…new immigrants in 2016 totaled nearly 1.8 million, which -- if confirmed by the final count -- would tie with 1999 as the highest in history."

Immigrants and Offspring: 25% of US Population

"As a group, there are now more than 43 million immigrants in the United States, legal and illegal, representing about 13 percent of the population […] The U.S.-born children of immigrants constitute a group almost the same size. This means that about a quarter of the total U.S. population are either immigrants or their offspring."

What do you think?

I think we are losing our nation and our birthright, and the nation is devolving into what good immigrants are trying to escape.

I think there is no way in hell we will deport 20 million people, and yes, it's at least 20 million illegal immigrants here, probably way north of that.

Pass a DACA deal, what about the parents? We aren't sending them back.

Does our government have the right...

... to limit how many people enter? How many become citizens?

... to decide what type of people enter? By religion? By nationality? By ethnic group? Gender? Age?

 How much is too much?

Dec 1, 2017 - A Chicago bakery is busted for employing hundreds of illegal immigrants. The Cloverhill Baker, who supplies hamburger buns to McDonald's, will have to replace one third of its workforce. This comes after ICE officers raided the company's factory and detained 800 illegal immigrant employees.

That's 800 jobs that were taken from Americans.

  2. Do the countries from which these immigrants emigrate recognize the "rights of immigrants" to settle where they may, with impunity? If the answer is no, then "No, these people have NO RIGHT to be here."

    1. Of course, the answer to that question is "no." There are zero countires in the world with a universal open border policy.

    3. The Schengen Agreement only eliminates internal borders. The Dublin Agreement (which is failing under the refugee crises) mandates how immigrants and asylum seekers are to be allocated to member states. But not all immigration and asylum seekers are accepted. Many are still "turned back".

  3. Apparently we are expected to deny these facts as we tear down our statutes that remind us of our history and soon to ban all that reminds us of our previous culture. Welcome to the Planet of the Apes.

  8. Yet other experts on illegal immigration say that, in 2016, half of what came in 2015 arrived...
Also, I don't count entrepreuners being those guys I see on residential corners selling grapefruits and bags of oranges! Don't believe that stat is correct on any level.
I also feel it's unfair to lump legal immigrants with legal immigrants except perhaps only when his point is that the babies of illegals ARE now legal, if they're born here.

"too much" is when we're taking in people who come for a hand out and Americans are at risk because of all the money spent supporting criminal immigrants (anyone illegal by definition)...who haven't come with skills and a guarantee o of either work or a family member who can support them, like we used to demand.
"too much" is chain migration...if you don't want to live without your whole family, you need to stay home or do what it takes to come legally and then sponsor them, like so many of my relatives did.

FT...beautifully put about Graham...I wrote "I know Reverend Graham will enjoy God as much as God's enjoyed him these last 99 years! May he rest in peace and happiness in His Father's house."

  9. ... the nation is devolving into what good immigrants are trying to escape.

Exactly so, which is what the American left is hoping for. Our continuation down this track will eventually deliver the left's self-fulfilling prophecy: an unexceptional America. If there is such a thing as cultural treason, this must be a prime example of it.

  11. SF,
    Calling THIS to your attention:

The federal agency that issues green cards and grants citizenship to people from foreign countries has stopped characterizing the United States as “a nation of immigrants.”

The director of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services informed employees in a letter on Thursday that its mission statement had been revised to “guide us in the years ahead.” Gone was the phrase that described the agency as securing “America’s promise as a nation of immigrants.”

The original mission statement said: “U.S.C.I.S. secures America’s promise as a nation of immigrants by providing accurate and useful information to our customers, granting immigration and citizenship benefits, promoting an awareness and understanding of citizenship, and ensuring the integrity of our immigration system.”

The new version says: “U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services administers the nation’s lawful immigration system, safeguarding its integrity and promise by efficiently and fairly adjudicating requests for immigration benefits while protecting Americans, securing the homeland and honoring our values.”...
