Conversations — Ad Nauseam

"We need to have a conversation about..."

"We need to open a dialog about..."

Or any one of the numerous variations on the above.

I've come to despise this meme, now a cliché.

The latest "conversation we need to have" is that about gun control, specifically, banning bump stocks — in reaction, of course, to the horrific slaughter perpetrated by Stephen Paddock in Las Vegas on October 1, 2017.

I admit that I haven't been reading or watching the news much the past few weeks.  But I have managed to to devote some time to keeping up with current events.  My reaction:

The above said, here is a point about which I haven't noticed much coverage in the ceaseless droning and screeching of the 24/7/365 news cycle (aka the Curse of Cable News), with a hat tip to Zero Hedge, via Bunkerville:

What is your opinion regarding banning bump stocks, which, in effect and if I understand correctly, convert a one-pull-one-round rifle into a rapid-fire machine gun?

143 comments:

  1. Do not budge one inch. Not one.
I don't have a bump stock. I can't afford to feed it. Ammo is not cheap.
But it meets BATF mandates on one pull, one shot.
It just allows you to pull the trigger faster.
If you change the legal wording to ban "bump stocks" there will be collateral damage to other definitions.
Ban Democrats from owning guns. They are historically the ones to turn them on their fellow citizens starting at Fort Sumter.

  2. I had no idea what these bump stocks were until now. I watched a video of one in action and it appears to simulate an automatic with respect to rapid-firing. Maybe they could be on the table for 'discussion', but the problem is that the democrat agenda is to chisel away until there is nothing left of the 2nd Amendment. That's why we gird our loins and dig in whenever a democrat or late night comedian(?) opens their piehole.

  3. Forget about banning bump-stocks. Here's why. Every semi-auto weapon in the world can be turned into a machine gun with a properly dimensioned piece of wood.

    1. You just need to press the gun's trigger "forward" against a stationary peg. That way you don't "pull the trigger," you push it, and the gun's recoil does the rest.

    5. And THOSE weapons, if tricked out with an external device, would be EXTREMELY ACCURATE and ON TARGET throughout an "automatic" induced burst... FAR MORE DEADLY than the Vegas shooter.

Contrary to the willful ignorance of the gun control cabal, multi-shot firearms existed even before the era of our Founders. And as studied and intellectual curious as they were, you'd better believe that they had knowledge of them [I believe TJ owned one or two] when they drafted the 2A.

The bleat of "they could have never envisioned [black scary] "assault rifles""....is a transparent hoax.

So what would be left as an "acceptable" firearm? Bolt action only?

      What about revolvers?

    14. from Wiki: In 1777, Philadelphia gunsmith Joseph Belton offered the Continental Congress a "new improved gun", which was capable of firing up to twenty shots in five seconds; unlike older repeaters using complex lever-action mechanisms, it used a simpler system of superposed loads, and was loaded with a single large paper cartridge. Congress requested that Belton modify 100 flintlock muskets to fire eight shots in this manner, but rescinded the order when Belton's price proved too high.

  4. Banning bump stocks is a fools errand, for some of the reasons mentioned above. These contraptions are also ridiculous and makes an AR harder to control.

Incrementalism is the strategy of the gun control cabal, as Nancy Pelosi admitted to yesterday. They think that they've "compromised" with regards to background checks.

      Ah, the voice of reason.

The NRAhas been stockpiling every possible deregulation just for these days when they may have to give a little.
So bumpstocks are somehow regulated. Big loss. The things are grossly inaccurate and not much good for anything but gun loons getting their rocks off playing Rambo or shooting up a crowd.

The most troubling aspect of all this is not that I have to figure out how to coexist with people who feel the need to go to church strapped but the gradual (but accelerating) militarization of the culture from the useless imperial military to the police and their Halloween S.W.A.T. dress up. Armored cars for small town cops.

Problem is those people who have firearms grafted to themselves as extensions of their personality and "not one goddamn inch".

Then they lecture about "freedom". It is intensely sad.

      Delete
    3. No. What's sad it the perpetual erosion of Constitutional rights.....enabled and abetted by both parties.....yet one distinct party in this instance attempts to lecture about "common sense" and "reason".

We have to figure out how to live with Statists who think that guns are evil and want the Citizen to be forced to only rely on the reactive response of agents of the State, for their protection.

Sad doesn't begin to cut it when discussing the willful ignorance and intentional intellectual malfeasance that the gun control cult tries to fob off on the public.

    4. The very presence of a snotty, belligerent, perverse, pseudo-erudite champion of sophistry and guile like Canardo in the United States of America is "INTENSELY SAD," in and of itself.

Since 1952, when I was first made aware of the Red Menace, I have been in favor of making the public practice and promotion of MARXISM and all its malignant offshoots ILLEGAL.

Leftist ideology by its very nature is SUBVERSIVE and TREASONOUS, because it seeks to undermine and ultimate destroy our Constitution by mocking, defaming and perverting the ideals of our Founding Fathers.

The rationale behind this attack on our very identity as a nation and as a people is rooted in the false notion that because the Founding Fathers were not SAINTS –– perfect, godlike, paragons of perfection in every minute detail of their public and private lives –– they, therefore, must be regarded as self-serving HYPOCRITES whose words and deeds were entirely spurious, and therefore utterly without merit.

Whereas KARLMarx and all HIS angry, vehement, vociferous, aggressive, fundamentally belligerent followers truly ARE "The Way" - - "The Truth" - and "The Life" for Modern Man.

To that I echo the word of my dear Aunt Mehitabel who said, "PSHAW!" whenever she knew that something proposed in her presence was foolish and utterly devoid of merit.

  8. Interesting:

In looking over the original patent US # 8,127,658 B1 for the device one finds a very interesting point about this story. The background section of the patent mentions the various techniques and devices to ‘increase the firing rate of semi-automatic weapons’. One of these being the techniques of “Bump firing” and the use of the “Belt loop” method, whereby one merely places the weapon next to their hip and hooks one finger through both the trigger mechanism and belt loop of their clothing. The opposite hand is placed on the hand guard, when the firearm is pushed forward the trigger is a activated by the finger to discharge a round. The recoil the pushes the firearm back, resetting the trigger so that when the firearm is pushed forward once again it fires another round. The point is that one does not need a ‘Bump Stock’ to mimic the select fire function, only a belt loop.

    Is the above accurate?

I am waiting for more info, because while plausible it was just one more American going on a murderous rampage, much of it just doesn't make sense.

    - Did he have a big beef with Vegas, casinos, etc? Other than the years-old slip and fall failed lawsuit?

    - He did not snap. This took considerable deliberate planning and a long chain of deliberate actions, culminating in him smashing "shatter-proof" windows and laying down sustained gunfire with various weapons for over 15 minutes

    - Why the large variety and number of weapons? Makes no sense, especially having weapons of different calibers requiring a variety of ammo

    - How does a paunchy man in his 60's with no firearms experience carry out such an operation?

    - The shooter was taking Valium, a common (and commonly-ignored) factor in these incidents. That explains someone flying into a rage and "snapping," but that's not what happened in this case. What the Vegas murderer did requred planning, practice and a long string of deliberate tasks, culminating in operating the weapons to murder and wound over 500 people. A low dosage of valium is great for calming nerves...

Whether or not its a public record varies with the laws of each state. Some states don't even require registration so there is no record to be public. Of course, he didn’t say how we can do that, beyond taking guns away from human beings. Or knives. Or screwdrivers. Or, as we saw the other day in London, automobiles. I suspect that he’s one of those thought control morons who imagines that anyone can see inside the heads of other people. What he overlooks is that people who want to do harm to others will always get their hands on the means to do so ... but taking guns away from people (as they do in England, for example) simply make citizens unable to defend themselves, or in other words, victims. In the case of Las Vegas, I don’t see how carrying a handgun (a close combat weapon) might have altered the result. Maybe what we need, in reality, are fewer screwballs ... fewer leftists, but I repeat myself.

Why Paddock at the age of 64 suddenly -- suddenly as far as we know -- turned into a person who wanted a killing field remains a mystery.

Bump stocks should never have been legal.
There is also the matter of belt loops. Shall we also make belt loops illegal?

Legislation that also prevents sale of firearms and ammo to known criminals and the mentally ill or unstable.

As is known so far, Stephen Paddock doesn't fit either of those categories (known criminals and the mentally ill or unstable). Unless, of course, the sales of guns will be banned to all who are prescribed any type of antidepressant.

Why 9 rounds in a magazine, and not 8 or 10?

Legislation that also prevents sale of firearms and ammo to known criminals and the mentally ill or unstable.

This already exists, thanks for playing.

    5. Les, Your statement is an embarrassment, even for you. Please do some research and don't just ingest the leftwing prog propaganda.

President Obama's regulation removed a 2nd Amendment right from people without legal adjudication; a fundamental violation of our natural rights and the US Constitution.

We have laws on the books prohibiting the sale of firearms to criminals and to those properly adjudicated as being mentally ill and incapable of responsible firearm use.

  22. You've simply confirmed the intransigent nature of the right AOW. The right obviously does not choose to recognize the nature of our problem and therefore justifies in their minds the action of doing nothing.

Rather than discussing the issue honestly and responding to points made my your enemies to use FreeThinke's words the right always takes the road of deflection.

It is what it is and the nation will continue to accept this as normal.

    9. CI, what rule implementation are you referring to?
I know that the Social Security Administration tried to enact a rule that those who were in custodial care wouldn't qualify for firearm purchases but that was voted down.
If nothing else it might have cut down on proxy purchases but ... not one inch.

Please don't throw rocks at your teammates when they are winning. It's in poor taste.

      Delete
    12. Ducky, that's exactly the rule I was referring to:

The rule would require that the Social Security administration report to the Attorney General recipients found to be disabled in order for them to be added to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.[2] To qualify for reporting, an individual would have had to meet two criteria: They have to be receiving full disability benefits and couldn't find work. They require the assistance of a third party to manage their own benefits.

It was estimated that around 9% of the disability awardee population would have met this criteria.

There is no connection to proxy purchases, but there is most certainly a connection to the denial of Constitutional rights, and an onerous burden in the exercise thereof, to a sizable portion of the population....without just cause.

Rather a far cry from the distributed narrative of the Left.

  24. The murder map looks for the most part to be large urban areas: areas which hold a large dense population and often vote progressive. However, most polls and studies
show that progressives are largely not gun owners. IMO,
we are looking at urban gang warfare, given the geography shown.

  25. Americans are 10 times more likely to be killed by guns than people in other developed countries, a new study finds.

Compared to 22 other high-income nations, the United States' gun-related murder rate is 25 times higher. And, even though the United States' suicide rate is similar to other countries, the nation's gun-related suicide rate is eight times higher than other high-income countries, researchers said.

The study was published online Feb. 1 in The American Journal of Medicine.

"Overall, our results show that the U.S., which has the most firearms per capita in the world, suffers disproportionately from firearms compared with other high-income countries," said study author Erin Grinshteyn, an assistant professor at the School of Community Health Science at the University of Nevada-Reno. "These results are consistent with the hypothesis that our firearms are killing us rather than protecting us," she said in a journal news release.

Go study FBI statistics and tell us what our murder rate would be if you eliminated gang-related murders and murders committed by young African Americans.

Can you stomach the truth, Les?

If you're really brave, go check this out:

Chart of the day: More guns, less gun violence between 1993 and 2013

Between 1994 and 2014, 56% more guns, and murders down 49%...

      Hmmm....

How would a rational mind explain that, Les?

  29. HAPPY COLUMBUS DAY!

Enjoy it while we still have it. The Left is scheming right now to abolish all mention of Christopher Columbus as anything but a vicious, greedy racist who invaded land rghtfully belonging to noble savages, and all-but wiped them out by introducing deadly diseases into their earthly paradise.

The Left will do this as surely as God made little green apples, and they'll suppress any and all fond memories we've ever had of our past just as soon as they can get away with it.

The Founding Fathers wiil be next to go on the chopping block.

Mt Vernon and Monticello may be preserved, but they will be relegated to the same status that Auschwitz and Treblinka enjoy in post-war Germany today.

And after 1492, despite a great deal of ado,

Much struggle and inventiveness,

And wars both tiny and immense,

      Development given to few,

And much invention great and new,

It all turned out that battles fought

And victories won have come to naught.

Columbus to whom you've referred

Should have his exploits just deferred.
