My Head May Explode!

From this source (hat tip to Midnight Rider):
Aliens may destroy humanity to protect other civilisations, say scientists

Rising greenhouse emissions could tip off aliens that we are a rapidly expanding threat, warns a report
It may not rank as the most compelling reason to curb greenhouse gases, but reducing our emissions might just save humanity from a pre-emptive alien attack, scientists claim.

Watching from afar, extraterrestrial beings might view changes in Earth's atmosphere as symptomatic of a civilisation growing out of control – and take drastic action to keep us from becoming a more serious threat, the researchers explain.

This highly speculative scenario is one of several described by a Nasa-affiliated scientist and colleagues at Pennsylvania State University that, while considered unlikely, they say could play out were humans and alien life to make contact at some point in the future...

[...]

"Green" aliens might object to the environmental damage humans have caused on Earth and wipe us out to save the planet. "These scenarios give us reason to limit our growth and reduce our impact on global ecosystems. It would be particularly important for us to limit our emissions of greenhouse gases, since atmospheric composition can be observed from other planets," the authors write.

Even if we never make contact with extraterrestrials, the report argues that considering the potential scenarios may help to plot the future path of human civilisation, avoid collapse and achieve long-term survival.

As if the above isn't enough, check out the following from Paul Krugman, 2008 winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics (hat tip to Blog de KingShamus):
If we discovered that space aliens were planning to attack, and we needed a massive buildup to counter the space alien threat, and really inflation and budget deficits took secondary place to that, this slump would be over in 18 months.
King Shamus commented:
Look at how the supposedly elite institutions of achievement have beclowned themselves. Nobel laureates, NASA scientists; these used to be the top of the heap thinkers and doers of the world. Now, all they do is provide ever more pathetic and ever more fantastical justifications for big stupid blundering freedom-choking government.

Then they wonder why people constantly question the grand wisdom of the credentialed class.
Extraterrestrials aren't needed to destroy us, of course:

  1. I think the way things are going with our government and the greenhouse effect laws, there isn't going to be any room for any businesses to operate at all! What's sad is all the other manufacturing countries can do as they want!

  3. The squawking is getting ever more shrill from the mad left. It's an indication of how desperate they're becoming.

  4. These scientist have become shills for the left, they are no doubt getting grant money in payment for their claims.

  5. Yes, the space alien boogey men are going to get us. We just didn't buy enough Chevy Volts and florescent light bulbs and now we have to suffer the consequences of our laughing at enviro-ludites.

You'll have to excuse me, I have to go watch a documentary called Mars Attacks.

  6. Speedy G,
Some body has been watching too many Star Trek re-runs.

And too much Twilight Zone, too.

  8. My father was at the "alien autopsy" in 1947, at Wright Field. Those are his wingtips in the background.

    Prove me wrong.

  9. Science: systematic knowledge of the physical or material world gained through observation and experimentation.

Ask yourself if these NASA proclamations following the scientific method. Warren said it all. is really a documentary.

  10. Thanks for the laugh, and it's all true!

Every time you think the loony left can't get any loonier...

Meanwhile, I have libs at my place saying that Republicans need to 'get their heads out of their butts'...
I think I'll go back and say "we're just up there looking for aliens" :-)

  12. You can NEVER watch too much Star Trek.

That said, we don't need aliens coming to destroy our nation, we have one in the White House as we speak and he is doing a hell of a job. Ooops! Did I just say that? Yep, sure did. :)

  13. You would think that there are better things to study, speculate on or spend time on. Who pays their slaries? I knew a scientist who explained the benefits of studying about the possibilities of life on other planets, what he said made sense because it gave momentum to thought processes. Having said that, give me a break, such speculation has no place and simply misdirects some serious brainpower in the wrong direction (assuming that it is serious).

  15. D Charles,
there are better things to study, speculate on or spend time on

    Exactly!

They are shilling for environmentalism and looking stupid in the process.

I like science fiction as much as the next person, but dragging extraterrestrials into the discussions of the status of our planet is discrediting.

  16. Story is coming out now that NASA had nothing to do this report. One of the writers of the report has some kind of affiliation with NASA, but was just doing this with a group of his friends.

    Good to know.

Still, all this talk of aliens saving Planet Earth is too much for me.
