Easter 1956

According to the person who posted the photo below at Facebook, this is what the New York City skyline looked like at Easter that year:

    1. Q: Did Obama say we "are no longer a Christian nation"?

A: He said we are no longer "just" a Christian nation, but a nation of many other faiths as well. A chain e-mail drops that key word and thus changes the meaning.

"We are no longer a Christian nation....at least not "just"..."
That was 8 years ago; even since then, our poor country's doing worse for the fact he needed to emphasize.

    3. Obama, June 28, 2006 (prepared remarks): Given the increasing diversity of America's population, the dangers of sectarianism have never been greater. Whatever we once were, we are no longer just a Christian nation; we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers.

That quote appears also on Obama's campaign Web site.

Unfortunately for Obama, he stumbled just a bit when he delivered the actual quote, as can be seen in the video of his speech, posted on YouTube by the Obama campaign. The way it actually came out was:

Obama, June 28, 2006 (as delivered): Whatever we once were, we are no longer a Christian nation – at least, not just. We are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, and a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers.

That wasn't as smoothly stated as he had intended, but the meaning remains clear to any reasonable person. Saying that the U.S. is not "just" a Christian nation carries the sense that it is both a Christian nation and more: a nation of Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus and nonbelievers as well. Furthermore, any survey of religious beliefs held by Americans will show that to be a factually correct statement. However, what the authors of this and similar mass e-mails have chosen to omit is the word "just," converting Obama's factual description of America's diversity of religious beliefs to a statement that some interpret as anti-Christian.

President Obama is not anti-Christian, he is a Christian himself. You see this country as "doing worse for the fact he needed to emphasize." That's because a person with negative outlook will always see evil when truth (and what Obama said is the truth) is spoken. This country's not "poor," but thinking that it is makes it so.

This Nation was founded on the Judeo/Christian Ethic, including the basis for our laws. Would you like to start including some Sharia law into the system? If not, why not?

December 2015: "President Obama issued a special Christmas statement to recognize "brutal atrocities" against Christian communities:

'During this season of Advent, Christians in the United States and around the world are preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. At this time, those of us fortunate enough to live in countries that honor the birthright of all people to practice their faith freely give thanks for that blessing," said Obama...'

'Michelle and I are also ever-mindful that many of our fellow Christians do not enjoy that right, and hold especially close to our hearts and minds those who have been driven from their ancient homelands by unspeakable violence and persecution.'"

    8. According to this blog post at Z's site:

Josh Earnest said that the bombings of Christians on Easter Sunday wasn’t just aimed at Christians because “if you look at the list of the dead, there are a lot of Muslims.”

      [...]

Any time a lot of Christians are killed, Obama also mentions “Muslims were killed, too.”...

      [...]

The Taliban has SAID they were targeting Christians on Easter Sunday…what more do our ‘experts’ need???

    4. Good write up at Snopes

...it should be noted that Oklahoma City used building windows to depict crosses during the holidays as recently as 2010. The Empire State Building also displays festive lights during religious holidays (red, green and white for Christmas, pastal fades for Easter, blue and white for Chanukah) and Chicago's Daley Plaza has featured a Nativity Scene since 1984.

I don't have any quarrel with public displays. I particularly enjoy nativity displays at Christmas.

I don't understand why I'm being asked this question since I've written nothing here about Sharia Law or the Constitution. I did post Obama's correct statement on the fact that America is not JUST a Christian nation but also a nation of Jews, Hindus, Muslims, and even atheists. What has that statement to do with my opinion about a Judeo-Christian influence on American jurisprudence or my opinion on Sharia Law?

English common law had nothing to do with it?
The Magna Carta was less influential the the 10 Commandments?

    3. Mr. Ducky's Here answered it. The American Constitution may have been influenced somewhat by a Judeo-Christian ethic, but the founding fathers were wise to leave religion completely out of it. There is no religious test for serving in our government.

"Why won't you answer the question?" --Mr. JonBerg

Is this a forum to exchange ideas or an Inquisition?

Sharia Law is the religious legal system governing the members of the Islamic faith. It is derived from the religious precepts of Islam, particularly the Quran and the Hadith.

Since I'm not a Muslim, it has nothing to do with me.

I was just curious as to how in-to the "diversity" that you speak of, especially when it comes to Muslims. It doesn't seem to be working very well, here or in Europe where it's becoming more and more obvious, with reports that a preponderance of their population, in certain areas, support Sharia Law and are even practicing it.

  7. Interesting! I am a native New Yorker, and was living just across the Hudson River attending high school in suburban New Jersey in 1956. I was in close touch with New York City back then, and have no memory of large lighted crosses on any of the skyscrapers.

However, I DO remember full, free, enthusiastic public support for all the important occasions oin the christian liturgical calendar.

Lighted crosses or no lighted crosses we were an entirely different country sixty years ago –– an unapologetically Christian culture in essence, though by no means anything resembling a theocracy.

  8. "The best [remedy] for being sad," replied Merlyn…, "is to learn something. That is the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics or know your honor trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then -- to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting."
