More Tragedy from the Left

by Sam Huntington

I see that the scion of a leftist family has managed to destroy the innocent —again.  Elliot Rodger was the 22-year-old son of Peter, the assistant director of a film in production titled The Hunger Games.  It is a story based on a series of books by Suzanne Collins in which the residents of North America are subjected to the tyranny of a leftist government and are required to participate in death matches.  Don’t get me wrong —fiction is entertaining, but only to the point at which ceases being fantasy and starts being reality.

I suspect Peter Rodger is one of those seriously detached persons who think that guns kill people.  We call this irrational denialism —and it appears to have been a problem with Peter for quite some time.  But Peter isn’t alone, evidenced by the father of one of Elliot’s victims who shared his grief with us on national television —demanding the confiscation of firearms.  He too must think that guns kill people.  No, it was Elliot who killed these people.  You know, the son of the man who makes violent films and video games for children.

Progressive Misogynist
Whoever identifies these events as a tragedy is correct, but it is a calamity far surpassing the actual murder of innocents.  The Rodger family knew their son was mentally disturbed for a very long time —perhaps even as far back as his high school days, and yet, they did little more than cursory intervention.  If you believe the TV psychiatrists, Elliot was schizophrenic, anti-social, narcissistic, and paranoid.  None of these are sudden manifestations of mental disorder.     What we see in Elliot’s behavior is the cumulative effect of parental neglect.  But more than neglect, his parents aided and abetted these disturbed behaviors: Elliot was a spoiled child, allowed to have his way, whose abhorrent behaviors his parents delayed somewhat by purchasing him rich kid toys.

What is very telling to me is that as soon as Peter knew that his son was a mass murderer, he immediately contacted his attorney.  I suppose no one wants to be the target of a lawsuit, but this is not the behavior of a grieving parent —it is the behavior of a self-centered jerk that is trying to cover his own ass.

What happened in Santa Barbara wasn’t entirely the fault of Elliot’s parents.  We can thank Jimmy Carter for making it next to impossible to get someone committed to a mental institution, and perhaps California legislators who wish to give mass murderers more protection than the innocent.  By the way, California has one of the strictest gun control laws in the country, so let's not lose sight of the issue here.  This isn't about gun control; it's about parental neglect and liberalism on steroids.

So let's give a shout out to liberalism  shall we?  Liberalism —itself a mental disease, is the only way in which we can explain the hypocrisy of leftists who proclaim that Tea Party members are racist while they demonstrate the most egregious examples of racism —or while accusing the right of a war on women, they harbor deep misogynistic attitudes.  By the way, misogyny is a mental disorder —one that in extreme cases can warrant institutionalization.  Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t note that one frequent commenter here is a fervent misogynist  I can only hope that he’s getting the professional attention he needs —before he hurts someone.

  5. Question: What was the sticker price on that BMW that Elliot Rodger was driving?

I have to wonder if his father bought that car for his son -- as "a woman getter."

Elliot Rodger had a history of attacking any people that he perceived were happy -- especially couples. See Elliot Rodger's Previous Attacks on Women, Couples, and note the dates -- all the way back to July of 2012.

How many times did his parents pay their son's way out of trouble and thus help him to avoid the consequences of his own actions?

I think that another factor also plays in: the apparent lack of religious faith in that household. Religious faith often serves as a moral compass. It is my view that Elliot Rodger had no moral compass -- or else a moral compass so skewed as to be incompatible with any civilized society.

    1. Note this excerpt from the above link:

A July 2012 incident reflected his growing discontent.

Rodger said he grew jealous watching "a group of popular college kids" at a park. He felt insulted. He wanted to ruin their fun.

"So I drove to the nearby K-mart, bought a super-soaker, filled it up with orange juice that I bought at the same store, and drove back to the park," he wrote.

"I screamed at them with rage as I sprayed them with my super soaker … I was giddy with ecstatic, hate-fueled excitement," he wrote.

A similar incident occurred a year earlier at a Starbucks, where he saw a young couple standing in line, kissing.

"When they left the store I followed them to their car and splashed my coffee all over them," he wrote. "I was panicking as I got into my car and drove off, shaking with rage-fueled excitement."

  6. While understanding the grief of the father whose son's was life was taken with the use of a firearm, I am reminded that the first three victims were stabbed to death. Others were rammed and injured by Mr. Rodger with his vehicle. Media focuses on the issue of guns. Perhaps we should also outlaw kitchen knives and the cars we drive to work.

Murder is the act of an animated human. The tool used, is up to the perp. That tool, can also be a bathtub, prescription medications, glass vase.... The options are endless. If we begin to outlaw every object ever used to commit a murder Wal-Mart will implode.

Grief, by its very nature, is not often rational. There is a reason for the phrase "crazy with grief."

That father has to blame something for the injustice involved in losing one's son in such a manner.

  9. Yes indeed. The common thread of these mass murders is woven from the strands of mental illness, big pharma, and liberal upbringing.

  10. The problem here is these kids have mental problems. Remove the guns and the problem still remains; Part of it comes from these vidieo games and from whate these Progressive professors teach in the classroom. They still can't cope with life the way most of us do. If he hadn't shot people he would have eventually been tying them up and knifing them to death. That's how they did it 40 years ago. Back then, it was a bit scarier because it was so violent, not just a drive-by shooting. Mass Murder was big back in the 60s and 70s. Back then it was middle-aged men. Now it's college students. Seems most of the progressive crazies are coming out of our universities. What are they being taught that causes them to hate so much?

From what I've seen of Dr. Carson, he's an inspirational example of what you can accomplish in America if you work hard and stick to principles that are time tested and proven. The story of how his mother, with her 3rd grade education, worked so hard to raise him and instill in him the importance of education is a testament for the road to success.

He seems to be a good man and would make a good inspirational leader.

Unfortunately, he seems to be too good for the cesspool of the District of Corruption., like what we have there today.. He'd be eaten alive by the slimy liberal - progressive media. He'd be a babe in a woodland filled with political wolves. If he is the man of principles he appears to be, he wouldn't take to being handled and managed by political advisers and media handlers.

It pains me to say it but America has sunk too low for a man like Dr. Carson. Everything good and decent is open game for ridicule in today's America.

The glorification of the angry young man/anti-hero, whose legend lives "forever"?

In some ways, Elliot Rodger reminds me of the film Rebel without a Cause. In fact, something in Rodger's demeanor in the videos he made strongly reminds me of that film.

I'm sure that what happened is more complicated than what I'm suggesting in this comment.

  11. Tammy about says it all. I would add that, in many of the recent mass killings, those with [known] mental problems, not properly addressed, were the real fault. So called, "Gun Control" is a simplistic and ineffective attempt to solve the [causes] and prevent these tragedies.

  12. This was a powerful and well written post here, sir. I agree with you totally. The progressivisms have dealt this society a mortal blow. Guns my arse. Its all these sickos that are amongst us that are the "weapon". And as one of your good readers pointed out, knives were used as a weapon as was his movies funded clunker... I mean, BMW. Thank you, Jimmy Carter. Feinstein, you need to restrict knife sales.

  13. Thee is no question that Rodger’s problems were ignored by his parents, and I might add, in much the same manner that adoring followers gloss over the mental health indices of our bizarre president. In the long term, ignoring the problem on makes it worse.

We do not appear inclined to have serious discussion about mental health issues; we are not yet willing to look carefully at the balance between the rights of citizens, such as Elliot Rodger, and the rights of the innocent to live their lives unmolested. You are right to suggest that this isn’t a gun issue, and that the left seems oddly fixated on that one thing; it is a mental health issue. Now would be a good time to examine and discuss violent films and video games that target adolescent consumers (and their mindless parents).

It's only a mental health issue?
Are you going to tell me that you, the NRA, Rush Limbaugh and other assorted "firearm enthusiasts" are going to countenance ANT legislation that would toughen the mental health restrictions on ownership.

This is a mental health issue and it's also a gun ownership issue. Don't try to finesse this.

their names and pictures all over the newspapers, It’s true that The Coward apparently hated women. He also hated men, his family, himself, and all of humanity. I wonder if he was an Obama worshiper?

And on another note, but in the same vein: this has nothing to do with gun control, asI already see on the progressive blogs..

  16. The real tragedy is that the people who live in Dementia Town are completely unaware of their own madness; perhaps they are unaware of how much misery they spread throughout this once-great nation. Or maybe they just don’t care. I’d place my bet on the latter rather than the former.

  17. I read today that comedian Adam Corolla seems to have figured it all out. We can fix our country by doing only two things: focus on our family, and take care of our children. This probably makes too much sense. The left will think it's a trick.

  18. His son was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome at a young age.

Now if video games cause Asperger we'd love to see your research but my guess is you're blowing smoke as usual.

Now the parents wee concerned about his behavior and a mental health professional encouraged them to contact police.
So the police send two highly qualified uniforms to determine if he's a threat.
    They thought he seemed fine.

    2. Stogie,
      Great comment!

As far as I can tell, no gun law would have prevented Elliot Rodger from slaughtering people. Despite all those experts counseling and studying him, Elliot Rodger was never diagnosed as mentally ill, so not even a gun law barring the mentally ill from purchasing a firearm would have made a difference. Asperger Syndrome is not a mental illness; rather, it is a difference, and we all may have a touch of difference.

Apparently, the man was consumed with hate-filled rage against the human race.

We should also remember that he first stabbed three people to death. He also used his BMW as a weapon.

  21. I keep seeing mention that Elliot Rodger was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome.

Let us be clear about Asperger Syndrome. There is no standard diagnostic test for this syndrome.

Furthermore, it may well be possible that someone is diagnosed with Asperger's when something else is going on instead.

Before the sites were taken down, I scrutinized Elliot Rodger's Blogspot and his Facebook page. What I saw there was hate, hate, hate -- and "Me, me, me!" The Aspies whom I personally know -- and I know several who are suspected of having Asperger Syndrome -- do not exhibit those traits in such strength nor in such extremes.

What I did observe at Elliot Rodger's web sites: a rich and spoiled young man who believed that it was his right to have sexual encounters with any woman he found desirable. He also seems to have assumed a role: the role of a pouty thug. It was also of interest to observe just how much he hated his younger half brother.

I should also point out something else. Elliot Rodger claimed that he was a virgin. Maybe he was. But we have only his word for it that he could never get "lucky." Perhaps he couldn't get "lucky" because people sensed a sociopath.

  26. In fact, if guns are taken away, and the universe somehow bent to the point that people cannot make guns, buy them on the black market or obtain them any number of other ways, then violent crimes against individuals will increase.

I posted an article written by the UK Media stating that the UK, disarmed of guns for decades now, is # 1 in Europe and #2 in the world for violent crimes against individuals.

Gee, how can this be. Well, it's freaking simple. When the Vermin know for a pretty solid fact that that woman is disarmed, or that man or couple living in a nice house appearing to have plenty of liquid assets for the taking, they will bust through the door, rape, pillage, steal, and be gone and the cops - who don't even bother showing up in Detriot for hours on 911 calls, probably won't even be called. Try dialing 911 while your head becomes a baseball at the hands of heavy hitter Vince Vermin. Good God are you people THIS Stupid?
In the face of irrefutable evidence ?!? If you get your way, I will pray that you are Vince's first victims.
