  1. Thersites,
    No kidding!

As you may have noticed, I've been spending more time "off watch." I feel better for it! Too much ugliness and too much carping are bad for the soul and result in insomnia.

  2. We have much to learn from the animals. No doubt about it.

They aren't overly ambitious, and they don't do too much negative thinking.

  3. The photo of guess who found your antidepressant pills has me laughing. The cats face is priceless.

  4. The photo of the gray cat with the turtle reminds me of my top cat -- Cameo. I can't help but laugh every time I look at Cameo, one tank of a cat, but a gentle soul when it comes to other animals.

  6. BIg and rough-textured to the touch as they are there's something endearing about elephants that always makes me want to rush over and hug them.

Silly, I know, but the feeling is real.

I had a whole menagerie of stuffed animals when I was very small including Brown Betsy, the only female Teddy Bear in Creation, Jocko, the monkey, and a gray-plush DUMBO complete with red-white-and-blue collar and pointy clown hat. I loved all my stuffed animal friends, but DUMBO was a special favorite.

Walt Disney's movie "DUMBO" was brand new at the time, and I remember feeling very sympathetic to the little elephant with ears so long he could step on them and trip himself up. Poor DUMBO was the object of much ridicule, until he learned to use his long ears to FLY -- and then he became a STAR.

I suppose now that "Dumbo" is just a variation on "The Ugly Duckling" by Hans Christian Andersen, but the story of Dumbo was very special to me as a child -- and has remained so all these years.

    Toyland, Toyland,
Dear little girl and boy land!
    Once you've crossed its borders
    You may never return again.

  7. FT,
I like elephants. They are amazing creatures.

But of all the wild animals, I have a particular fondness for giraffes (They're tall, and I'm well under average height) and tortoises.

The latter like me too, and it's quite something to witness. If I visit a zoo and go over to the tortoise area, the tortoises turn and come toward me. Zoo keepers always comment about how I'm a magnet for tortoises.

  9. Funny you would mention the affinity tortoises have for you.

At the Florida Aquarium years ago, I was sitting by a turtle pen waiting for the kids, and one large turtle climbed out and came over to me. A nearby aquarium employee grabbed it and put it back.

Minutes later, the turtle was out and this time made it to my leg where it just sat halfway perched on my thigh. The girl apologized while she put the turtle back into its pen. She'd never seen that behavior before.

The turtle kept it up for about 15 times - yes, I had to call my family to watch. It was unbelievable.

My daughters are convinced that I charm cats, dogs, and babies.

My daughter's first words were, "You're a turtle charmer, too!"

  10. Cube,
    You, too?

Back when I was a kid and everyone collected box turtles, all my friends had turtles holed up in their shells. My friends learned to hand their box turtles to me, and within 3 minutes at the most, the turtles were out and about.

    Strange -- but nice!
