Sequestration Reality Check

With a hat tip to Randy's Roundtable for the graphic below:

From Bob Woodward's February 22, 2013 essay about sequestration:
In fact, the final deal reached between Vice President Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in 2011 included an agreement that there would be no tax increases in the sequester in exchange for what the president was insisting on: an agreement that the nation’s debt ceiling would be increased for 18 months, so Obama would not have to go through another such negotiation in 2012, when he was running for reelection.

So when the president asks that a substitute for the sequester include not just spending cuts but also new revenue, he is moving the goal posts. His call for a balanced approach is reasonable, and he makes a strong case that those in the top income brackets could and should pay more. But that was not the deal he made.
What is the motive behind the sequestration-related demonization of the GOP? The 2014 elections?

  1. All that comes to mind are:

    A. Y2K - Remember that?

    B. The Fiscal Cliff - We fell over it, and so far no one has died as a result

    C. Sequestration - Sounds too much like masturbation or menstruation or micturation to me.

Sorry, but I'm YAWNING as I poke away at these keys.

    This too shall pass.

    I'm going back to bed.

  3. "Blah, blah, blah. Whine, whine, whine," goes the mainstream media, the local governments, the federal government about the evils of sequestration.

Obama struck up the deal so that he could win the election. THAT is the real story!

  5. Beware! Is sequester happens, Obama and the media will make sure that unnecessary cuts happen so that real people suffer for this non-event. And, the blame will fall on the Republicans.

  6. cuts?

    what cuts?

truth in advertising... it's a reduction in the rate of planned spending increases.

    Hurricane Sandy just cost $50b...

    Sequestration is $85b...

    bfd!

  7. We need to think in PERCENTAGES -- nor "numbers."

EIGHTY-FIVE BILLION DOLLARS equals kist .06% of GDP.

It sounds like a lot of money, but it's no more than a fart in a bucket compared to the huge pile of DEBT that keeps getting bigger by the second.

"The "concern" from The White House and its mighty minions over this BOGUS issue is downright FARCICAL.

COF is exactly right, and he's not the only one saying that OSHIT will cynically USE this artificial "crisis" to further mislead the public into blaming Republicans.

  8. The big cuts come out of the military, and the Left loves that. Why would the Republicans go along with this to begin with? Stupidity. But they keep getting elected.

  9. Debbie,
If I'm not mistaken, sequestration will affect education benefits for veterans. I'm concerned about this matter because my cousin will be out of the USMC in March. He wants to go to college, but I don't know if he'll be able to afford to do so if education benefits are substantially cut.

  10. "that was not the deal he made."

And people wonder why Republicans have a problem negotiating with Obama?

He's obviously not a man of his word and cannot be trusted to negotiate in good faith.

He's a sociopath who thinks he can get away with anything because he knows the media will largely give him a pass on everything!
