"People in glass houses..."

This — from the woman who insisted that a YouTube video was the horrific cause of the September 11, 2012 attack on Benghazi:

Hillary Clinton warns of 'fake news epidemic'.

Video proof of HRC's assertion is HERE.

See THIS LINK for the timeline of blaming the Benghazi attack on a YouTube video. Notice the names of those who participated in the fake news story propagated as the cause of Benghazi.

As long as this post relates to "fake news," exactly what does the term mean? Does "fake news" actually mean anything that doesn't support the narrative of the moment?

  1. I think in 1984 it was impossible to know which news was fake - real news was sent down the memory hole and replaced with fake news - or the other way round.

No, that's not quite it. This is beyond subjective, fake news stories are more untrue than that. It's impossible to interprate them charitably. This is a whole different category from the journalism from Fox or MSNBC, which is at worst misguided. These stories have more in common with satire than sincere news, except they're not funny. And Hillary's right, there is an epidemic of it: they work well as click bait.

If you're motivated by generating advertising revenue through "clicks", why should you care about the veracity of your content? Maybe you would because you're a nice person, but there are people out there who don't. So they promulgate the cheapest content which generates the most clicks. It's a working business model. Stay vigilent!

One reason that I don't allow click-through advertising on this blog. Many other bloggers also think the same way, so don't have much -- if any -- click-throughs on their sites.

In fact, when a group and I doing terrestrial radio on KFNX Phoenix, we self-funded. We refused to be beholden to any sponsors.

  6. Worth reading:

What’s really behind all of the “Fake News” reports the media is publicizing!

    Note this portion:

...These sites have been around for years and yet no one has ever been the least concerned about them, until now. Suddenly, it seems to be all the so-called “Legitimate” news sites can talk about. Every major news media is talking about it and members of the Clinton election team have even gone so far as to blame “Fake News” for costing them the election. This simply isn’t true, but it gave the major media a Segway to begin talking about it.

Even the Social Media sites have started bashing and talking about it. Don’t you find it funny that out of the blue, they seem to feel it’s their responsibility to put an end to this so-called “Terrible menace to society”? Why would they suddenly decide to spend time and money to combat something that has been around for so long?

Facebook is even testing a new warning sign that they want to post on any status or sight who “THEY” feel is not legitimate? This should be raising all kinds of red flags with everyone and especially Preppers and Patriots. It’s called “censoring the news “and you can bet that they will tag any post whose messages don’t align with theirs as “Fake”!

    [...]

I think that if you stop and think about it, you will plainly see that all of the hype about “Fake News” is nothing more than a smear campaign against alternate news media, in an effort to drive people back to the major news Corporations. They want to force people to think that they have no alternative but to listen to ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and others for their news. The news business is a billion dollar industry and they are not going to give up without a fight....

It could well join the notorious fake news sites like Info Wars, Breitfart News , Gateway Pundit, and Geller/Spencer as well as most of hate radio.
Most of these sites have a small kernel of truth in what they print but also deliberately mislead.

The internet has quickly become a solid device for turning the populace into idiots.

I found the opinion piece via a Google search with the terms "what's really behind fake news" (no quotations). 45,700,000 results! Have at it, and see what you find.

Disclaimer: I do not follower Prepper sites.

As for the notorious fake news sites you mentioned, those sites are not always inaccurate.

In fact, some of the "fake news" sites are indeed accurate.

I do not automatically believe any of the sites I frequent. I look for verification by at least one more unaffiliated site.

    4. I do follow Prepper sites [some of them anyway] for equipment, tips, etc...., but I specifically don't ingest much "news" from them. They tend towards the Alex Jones, Obama is a secret Kenyan-Muslim-Communist who's going to destroy America theme.

I do wonder what they'll do for "news" once Obama leaves office.

  7. Here's a quick recap of why Hillary lost, according to the Democrats:

Okay... It was the RUSSIANS! in league with the KKK and the Neonazis mobilizing the millions of closet racists of the Vast alt-right conspiracy, infiltrating the FBI and hacking Comey's brain, with the CIA passing info to wikileaks hacked from Hillary's server, facilitated by Julian Assange, who's really a CIA-KGB triple agent. It's the same kabal that fabricated the entire Benghazi fake news fiasco triggered by the anti-muslim filmmaker...

    2. This lefty has a different perspective.

I'd say there were three things that got him the win:

      1. The Electoral College - We are still stuck with that kluge that the founding oligarchs constructed to guarantee the continuance of slavery.

      2. Clinton's arrogance and poor campaign - Huge ad buys in Los Angeles and virtually non in Milwaukee. Truly out of touch. Absolutely moronic campaign that focused on berating Trump.

      3. The Democratic Party - The burnt out husk of the party that followed Clinton's Democratic Leadership Council in abandoning the American working class and leaving it to be lathered up by the likes of Rush "Talent on Loan from Synthetic Morphine" Limbaugh and Roger "The Groper" Ailes.

Now, it isn't as if Trump is going to deliver the working and middle class anything but a good screwing but it will take a bit for them to realize it.

    3. Duck,
It seems to me that almost every time we have an election, the side that lost wants to dump the Electoral College if there is any discrepancy between the popular vote and how the Electoral College is slated to declare the win.

We are still stuck with that kluge that the founding oligarchs constructed to guarantee the continuance of slavery.

There was more to it than the continuance of slavery. Our Founders feared mob rule (popular vote).

BTW, I agree with your Point 2. [Did the earth just move?]

WOW, you think that economic and employment growth are , some how, mutually exclusive,

So, reduction in tax (more money for investment) and reparation of, possibly trillions of dollars, held hostage off-shore that could be invested here. Which would be a definite boon to investment, productivity and a commensurate addition of employees is somehow not what we should strive for?

In 2000 when George Bush was widely anticipated to win the popular vote and lose the electoral college I defended it vigorously - and still do. For the same excellent reasons it was created.

  9. Does "fake news" actually mean anything that doesn't support the narrative of the moment?

By and large, yes. people on both sides of the spectrum have tricked themselves into believing that a certain media outlet or two, is nothing but propaganda for their political opposition.....while lapping up everything another media outlet or two spews out, willfully ignoring that it's the propaganda for their own party.

This enables them to give their candidate/nominee a pass on everything that they'd been bleating about during the administration of the political opponent.

    Lather, rinse, repeat.

Journalism is dead in America.......the slacked-jawed amongst us only happen to believe it's half-dead.

    4. Grab your tinfoil hats if necessary, but I really think that the genesis is our evolution [devolution?] to a leisure oriented society. Between automation and technology, we have far more time on our hands than ever before in human history…..and we have the ability to receive nearly everything the heart desires [via tender or credit] delivered to our doorstep/car window, etc]. The increased leisure time affects our parenting skills and efforts [or lack thereof]. It enables a sense of entitlement and siphons the will to be self-sufficient. And finally, it engenders a paradigm of not demanding more of ourselves, our offspring……and our politicians.

Our society has therefore, become consumer-driven, commercialized and disposable. This understandably bleeds into our politics. Critical thought, however much we proclaim to employ it…..is often discarded in favor of a streamlined, user-friendly process. We have Team A and Team B…..as well as a compliant media that has its entire business model created around that. We have media outlets that cater to our preconceived notions, across the spectrum…..that serve to reinforce our perception bias. Thus, and news that is contrary to those biases, we view as suspect at best…and false, or ‘fake news’, at worst. These contrary sources cause us to suspiciously view or entirely disregard our own institutions [not that they should ever be given a blanket pass for ‘truthiness’]. In short, all of these factors serve to divide us as an electorate. That’s probably a rambling mess, but it’s the wave tops of what I think has brought us to this point.

Finally, a loosely related pet-peeve of mine….we very literally hold in the palm of our hands, the means to be the most educated generation in human history: the smart phone. And what do we do with it? Play stupid games and engage in Facebook gossip.

  10. John Stossell-or some conservative like Stossell, was taken to the wood shed (in the '90's) for his reports. He was being labeled as a fake news reporter. The big wigs did it on tv for all to see.
But then the tables were turned as Stossell recited news story after story, and Named those reporters spewing false stories.
Stossell schooled them and took them to the wood shed.
This was in the '90's, and here we go again with these pointee heads seeming to paint all that is conservative as the Fascist. How a free press became fake.

    Excerpt:

...If one wonders why American audiences are reposting fake news rather than purchasing subscriptions to the Washington Post, look no further. When the free press falls into disrepair, readers click elsewhere.

    [...]

If journalists want to know why they've lost credibility, they should in many cases read through their own clips. This week has been full of egregious examples....

Read the rest at the link.

Cognitive bias in play. Big time!

What the essay omits: how schools of journalism have changed over the decades. The journalistic style known as The Inverted Pyramid has been abandoned in favor of biased reporting -- now the lead stories instead of being confined to the opinion pages. The hard news stories now provide a hook ("anecdotal lead") right away. Sheesh.

I personally know CNN journalists who been fired if they used The Inverted Pyramid instead of beginning their news articles with the anecdotal lead.

In sum, when we read news stories they aren't really news stories anymore. They are opinion pieces -- minus the label "opinion."

  16. I heard the bells on Christmas Day
    Their old, familiar carols play,
    And wild and sweet
    The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
    The belfries of all Christendom
    Had rolled along
    The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
    A voice, a chime,
    A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
    And with the sound
    The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
    The hearth-stones of a continent,
    And made forlorn
    The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

    And in despair I bowed my head;
"There is no peace on earth," I said:
    "For hate is strong,
    And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!"

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead; nor doth he sleep!
    The Wrong shall fail,
    The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men!"
