Did The White House Threaten Bob Woodward?

Recently, journalist Bob Woodward, sometimes credited with bringing down the Nixon Presidency, wrote an article about Obama and sequestration.

Now comes this (with a hat tip to Will of MFS - The Other News):

More information HERE and HERE.

Thuggery at the highest level?

  1. More thuggery:

Bob Woodward isn't the only person who's received threats for airing the Obama administration's dirty laundry. It seems anyone is a potential target of the White House these days - even former senior members of the Clinton administration.

A day after Woodward's claim that a senior White House official had told him he would "regret" writing a column criticizing President Obama's stance on the sequester, Lanny Davis, a longtime close advisor to President Bill Clinton, told WMAL's Mornings on the Mall Thursday he had received similar threats for newspaper columns he had written about Obama in the Washington Times.

Davis told WMAL that his editor, John Solomon, "received a phone call from a senior Obama White House official who didn't like some of my columns, even though I'm a supporter of Obama. I couldn't imagine why this call was made." Davis says the Obama aide told Solomon, "that if he continued to run my columns, he would lose, or his reporters would lose their White House credentials."...

  2. In yesterday's Telegraph (UK):

    A nasty, brutish, imperial presidency

...The threats being dished out to Woodward, Davis and others are extremely disturbing in a free society, and are a reflection of an imperial presidency that acts with impunity and is highly intolerant of dissent. The heavy-arm tactics that Obama’s team have deployed for years against conservatives are now being increasingly implemented as well against liberals questioning the president’s record....

  3. I love the way the leftist media are turning on own of their own.

  4. Many of the media were not even around at the time of Nixon. They haven't a clue what Woodward and Bernstein did.

  5. Bunker: Unfortunately, Nixon "lowered the bar" with this kind of thing. He did some bad stuff, and got away with a lot of it, and was pardoned. Obama is doing nothing more than following Nixon's low standards.

What makes it worse is that while Nixon broke laws and cut corners, his agenda was overall moderate, and in some cases absolutely necessary (such as his cracking down on Soviet agents in the US who were numerous in the leftist "anti-war" movement). Obama, in contrast, is cutting corners and breaking laws in order to push a much more extremist agenda, starting with his demand for economy-killing greedy tax hikes.

  6. This sequester is a huge non event.

Conservatives want it all to come out of social programs, Dems want to spread it around.

No props in reporting something straightforward so Woodward needs a way to make himself relevant.

    Yawn.

  7. Possibly of interest...
Obama is the closest thing to Nixon we've seen in 40 years
    by Patrick Caddell:

...While Barack Obama may not share the Nixon pedigree, he and his White House are the closest thing to the Nixon regime of any that we have seen since then -- both in the extent of their paranoia and their willingness to suppress the truth and push the boundaries of law.

In my lifetime, in over 40 years in national politics, Mr. Obama is the only president who comes close to rivaling Richard Nixon for fundamental disingenuousness...

    [...]

As the youngest person on Nixon's enemies list in 1972, I am particularly sensitive to a White House where they have utter disregard for trampling on dissent and on the rights of individuals....

  8. Duck,
Conservatives want it all to come out of social programs

    Too broad a statement.

What is going on -- Right, Left, and Center: nobody wants any cuts that will have any personal effect, even to the extended family.

  10. "DID THE WHITEHOUSE THREATEN BOB WOODARD?"

Well, that's easy: YES the "Whitehouse" [threatens] every man, woman and child under its jurisdiction. Some, however, aren't savvy enough to realize it!

  11. Dearest Duckster, It's not a none event. Duhwon finally gets reported for lying. For "part" of the MSM that's quite a step.

  12. Conservatives Regret Taking Woodward’s ‘Threat’ Story Seriously

"Now that the correspondence between Bob Woodward and the White House has been revealed as tame and cordial, conservative commentators are reacting with disappointment to the veteran journalist's claim that he was threatened over his sequestration reporting.

Politico on Thursday posted the emails between Woodward and White House economic adviser Gene Sperling, who told Woodward, "as a friend, I think you will regret staking out that claim."

"Looks like we were played," The Daily Caller's Matt Lewis wrote Thursday morning.

RedState editor Erick Erickson was also surprised after reading the emails:

    Erick Erickson✔ @EWErickson

Ok wow. Finally read the email to Woodward. I must now move to the "not a threat" camp."

There was no threat. Just a number of conservatives wishing it were so. It just didn't happen. Woodward made a fool of himself.

  13. Shaw,
Surely you are aware that others have come forward to talk about being warned away from publishing articles unfavorable to Obama: Pat Caddell, Dr. Ben Carson, and others. Google searches will bear out what I'm saying in this comment.

  14. I'm not aware of the incidents you've cited. But I would look at the sources: they don't look to be neutral.

And as we have recently witnessed, people with axes to grind usually find just the right wheel to sharpen them.

  15. Shaw,
Neutral sources? Is there any such thing now?

  16. Progressives always think they are perfectly fair and "neutral," but that everyone whose thinking does not toe the progressive line is filled with spite, malice and vicious prejudice. Progressives you see, know positively that they are right, and everyone else is morally and intellectually challenged. I think most of them are perfectly sincere in maintaining this delusion. Anything that does not abet the progressive way of thinking just has to be dead wrong. Facts that do not coincide with their objectives are not thought of as facts by progressives.

  17. Dear Katherine Heartburn,

Your description could just as well describe a conservative.

You just are too blind to see that.
